Chapter 4: The Photograph Behind the Door

“Because the last time someone opened it, she wasn't alone.””

Daniel's words hung in the bright hallway.

Claire stared at him, the unfamiliar metal key pressing into her palm. Behind her, Lily's fingers clutched the fabric of her beige blouse, trembling so violently that Claire could feel every movement.

“What does that mean?”” Claire asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“Put the key down.””

“No.””

“Claire, please.””

“You've had all the time in the world to tell me the truth. You chose to lie instead. I'm done doing things your way.””

She turned toward the basement door.

Daniel stepped forward.

Claire raised the key between them.

“Take one more step, and I'm calling the police.””

He stopped.

For a moment, the only sound was Lily's uneven breathing.

Then a soft voice came from behind the door.

“Claire?””

Claire crouched beside the lock.

“I'm here. Can you tell me your name?””

A pause.

“My name is Vanessa.””

Daniel's face changed.

It was subtle, but Claire saw it. His lips parted. His shoulders dropped. He stared at the door as though he'd just heard the name of someone who had been dead for years.

Claire stood slowly.

“Vanessa?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

She turned toward him.

“You know her?””

“No.””

“You reacted when she said her name.””

“I've never heard that name before.””

From behind the door, the woman let out a weak, bitter laugh.

“Ask him about the photograph.””

Daniel slammed his palm against the wall.

“SHUT UP!””

Lily screamed.

Claire spun around.

“Don't you ever shout like that in front of her again!””

Daniel immediately looked toward his daughter.

“Lily, sweetheart, I didn't mean—”

“Don't talk to her,” Claire said.

“Talk to me.””

He swallowed.

The woman's voice came again, quieter this time.

“The photograph is behind the door. At the bottom. He dropped it when he locked me in.””

Claire looked down.

Something white protruded from the narrow gap beneath the basement door.

A corner of paper.

She crouched and reached for it.

Daniel lunged.

“DON'T TOUCH THAT!””

His fingers closed around Claire's wrist.

She screamed, wrenching herself away, and stumbled against the hallway table. A ceramic bowl crashed to the floor.

Lily rushed forward.

“Mommy!””

Claire held up her hand.

“I'm okay, baby.””

But she wasn't looking at Lily.

She was looking at Daniel.

He had never grabbed her like that before. Not once in eleven years.

His breathing was fast. His eyes were wide. And for the first time, Claire saw something worse than guilt in his face.

Panic.

“Why are you so afraid of a photograph?”” she whispered.

Daniel glanced at the paper beneath the door.

Then he stepped back.

“I didn't mean to hurt you.””

“Answer me.””

“I can't.””

“Then move.””

Claire crouched again, ignoring the sting in her wrist. She hooked two fingers around the exposed corner and carefully pulled.

The photograph slid across the floor.

It was an old printed picture, creased down the middle and stained along one edge.

Claire lifted it into the sunlight.

Three people stood in front of a brick house.

A younger woman with long braids held a newborn baby. Beside her stood another woman wearing a yellow cardigan, smiling at the camera.

The third person was Daniel.

He looked younger, perhaps in his early twenties. His hair was shorter, his face fuller, and his arm rested around the woman in yellow.

Claire's eyes moved to the caption handwritten on the back.

*Family Day — June 14. Never forget who belongs to whom.*

Her stomach tightened.

“Who are these women?””

Daniel stared at the picture.

“I don't know.””

Claire turned it over.

The woman holding the baby had a small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her left eye.

The woman in yellow had the same mark.

Claire looked toward the basement door.

“Vanessa? Which woman are you?””

A faint sound came from below.

“The one holding the baby.””

Claire examined the photograph again.

The infant's face was turned toward the woman's chest. A tiny hospital bracelet circled one wrist.

Then she noticed something else.

Daniel was wearing a wedding ring.

Not the gold band he wore now.

A thin silver ring on his left hand.

Claire looked up.

“You were married before me?””

Daniel's face went rigid.

“Claire, listen—”

“You were married before me, and you never told me?””

“It wasn't like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

He ran both hands through his hair.

“I was young.””

“You were standing beside a woman holding a newborn!””

“I said I was young!””

Lily began crying again.

Claire immediately lowered her voice.

“Baby, go sit on the couch. Keep your backpack with you. Don't go anywhere without me.””

Lily hesitated.

“Is Daddy a bad man?””

The question destroyed whatever composure Daniel had left.

“No,” he said immediately.

“No, baby. Daddy loves you.””

Lily looked at him, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Then why are you lying?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Claire helped Lily to the couch, then returned to the hallway.

She held up the photograph.

“Tell me who she is.””

Daniel stared at the woman in yellow.

“Her name was Rebecca.””

“Was?””

He closed his eyes.

“She died.””

The word seemed to drain the warmth from the room.

Claire's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“How many?””

Daniel didn't answer.

“Daniel, how many years?””

“Before I met you.””

Claire looked again at the picture.

“Then why is her photograph underneath our basement door?””

A heavy thump came from below.

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“Because he brought me here.””

Daniel spun toward the door.

“Stop talking!””

“You told me nobody would ever find out!”” Vanessa shouted.

“You told me this family would never have to know!””

Claire felt the photograph slip slightly in her damp fingers.

“This family?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“Claire, please. You need to look at the baby.””

Claire lowered her eyes to the picture.

The baby's face was mostly hidden, but a small hand rested against the woman's yellow cardigan.

On the baby's wrist was a thin silver bracelet.

A bracelet Claire had seen before.

She knew because she had kept the matching one in a small velvet box in her bedroom dresser for seven years.

It had belonged to Lily.

Daniel had told her that the hospital had made a mistake and that the bracelet was a duplicate. Claire had believed him because the little charm bore Lily's birth date.

Now she stared at the photograph, unable to breathe.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “why does that baby have Lily's bracelet?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached toward the photograph.

Claire pulled it away.

“Don't.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Claire, I can explain.””

She looked at the basement door.

Then at the man she had married.

“Tell me one thing,” she said.

“Is the woman in that photograph Lily's mother?””

Daniel's face crumpled.

Before he could answer, Vanessa struck the door once.

And whispered, “Ask him whose baby you brought home from the hospital.””
