Chapter 5: The Wrong Bracelet
Claire didn't remember walking back into the living room.
One moment she was standing in the hallway with the photograph in her hand. The next, she was beside the coffee table, staring at a framed picture of herself holding newborn Lily.
The photograph had been taken in the hospital seven years earlier.
Claire remembered the room's pale green curtains, the sharp smell of disinfectant, and Daniel standing beside her bed with tears running down his face.
He had kissed her forehead and whispered, “She's perfect.””
Claire had believed him.
She had believed everything.
Now the photograph in her hand showed a baby wearing a bracelet identical to the one in their hospital picture.
Her fingers went numb.
“Daniel,” she said, “what did Vanessa mean?””
He stood at the entrance to the hallway, looking as though he might collapse.
“Please sit down.””
“Answer me.””
“Claire, you're shaking.””
“BECAUSE YOU'RE MAKING ME QUESTION THE BIRTH OF MY OWN CHILD!””
Lily flinched on the couch.
Claire immediately regretted shouting, but she couldn't stop the words coming.
“Did you lie to me about Lily?””
Daniel looked toward their daughter.
“No.””
The answer was quiet.
Too quiet.
Claire stepped closer.
“Look me in the eyes and say it again.””
He tried.
His gaze dropped before he could finish.
Lily slowly climbed off the couch, carrying her pink backpack against her chest.
“Mommy?””
Claire turned.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
Lily approached cautiously.
“Am I in trouble?””
Claire dropped to her knees and pulled her daughter into her arms.
“No. Never. You have never done anything wrong.””
“Then why is Daddy crying?””
Claire looked over Lily's shoulder.
Daniel was crying now, silently, his hands pressed against his mouth.
Claire kissed Lily's forehead.
“Because grown-ups sometimes make terrible choices, baby. But none of those choices are your fault.””
Lily buried her face against Claire's shoulder.
“Are we going to Grandma's?””
“Yes,” Claire whispered.
She didn't know how she would get there. She didn't know whether Daniel would let them leave. But she knew one thing with absolute certainty.
She would not let her daughter remain alone in that house with a man who could hide something like this.
Claire stood and reached for her phone.
Daniel moved toward her.
“Where are you going?””
“Out.””
“You can't leave.””
She stared at him.
“Watch me.””
He stepped into her path.
“Claire, you don't understand what Vanessa is trying to do.””
“Then explain it.””
“She wants to destroy us.””
“Us?””
“Our family.””
Claire let out a sharp breath.
“You locked a woman in our basement. You lied about your past. And now you're telling me the woman begging for help is the threat?””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You don't know her.””
“No. I don't. Because you never gave me the chance to.””
He reached for her hand.
Claire pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
His expression changed from desperation to something harder.
“If you take Lily out of this house, you could put her in danger.””
Claire went cold.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No!””
“Then tell me what danger you're talking about.””
Daniel looked toward the basement.
He hesitated.
And that hesitation answered more than any confession could have.
Claire dialed the emergency number.
Daniel lunged toward the phone, but stopped when Lily screamed.
“DADDY, STOP!””
He froze.
His daughter stood between them, crying so hard she could barely speak.
“Please stop fighting Mommy.””
Daniel's face crumpled again.
He stepped away.
Claire kept the phone raised.
Then the line connected.
“Emergency services. What is your emergency?””
Claire opened her mouth.
Before she could speak, a crash erupted from the basement.
The operator's voice sharpened.
“Hello? Can you hear me?””
Claire stared toward the hallway.
“There's someone locked in my basement,” she said quickly.
“I need police and medical assistance. My husband has a key, and I believe the person inside may be injured.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Claire, please.””
She ignored him.
She gave the address, described the padlock, and told the operator that a child was present.
The operator instructed her to remain in a safe place and not confront anyone.
Claire agreed.
Then she ended the call only after confirming that help was being sent.
For the first time that afternoon, Daniel looked genuinely defeated.
“You called them.””
“Yes.””
“They'll take me away.””
“That's not my decision.””
He shook his head.
“You don't know what they'll find.””
Claire held up the photograph.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel looked at the picture for a long time.
Finally, he sank onto the edge of the couch.
“Rebecca was my fiancée.””
Claire stood motionless.
“Before you?””
He nodded.
“We were supposed to get married. She was pregnant.””
Claire's grip tightened around the photograph.
“Whose baby?””
Daniel covered his face.
“Rebecca's.””
“That doesn't answer the question.””
He lowered his hands.
“Rebecca's baby was born the same day as another little girl at the hospital.””
Claire felt the room tilt.
“No.””
“Claire—”
“No. Don't.””
He looked toward Lily.
“She was tiny. There were complications. I was in the hospital for hours. Rebecca wasn't supposed to—”
“STOP.””
Claire's voice cracked.
She remembered her own delivery. The pain, the exhaustion, the nurse placing a warm bundle against her chest.
She remembered Daniel standing beside her, telling her their daughter was beautiful.
She remembered the silver bracelet.
“Are you telling me you switched babies?””
Daniel started crying harder.
“I didn't plan it.””
Claire stared at him.
“You switched our babies?””
“I was trying to protect—”
“YOU SWITCHED OUR BABIES?””
Lily screamed and covered her ears.
Claire immediately crouched beside her.
“I'm sorry, baby. I'm sorry.””
Daniel rose from the couch.
“I was afraid Rebecca would take her away from me.””
Claire stared at him in disbelief.
“So you took my daughter away from me?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Seven years, Daniel! You had seven years!””
He shook his head.
“I know.””
“Every birthday. Every doctor's appointment. Every night I held her when she was sick. You watched me love a child while you knew there was another woman who—”
Claire couldn't finish.
A faint knock came from the basement.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“Claire, I never stopped looking for her.””
Claire turned toward the hallway.
“Looking for whom?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“The baby I gave birth to.””
Lily clung to Claire's hand.
Daniel whispered, “Please don't let her confuse you.””
Claire looked at him.
“Tell me where my biological daughter is.””
He stared at the floor.
For several seconds, the only sound was Lily crying.
Then Daniel said something that made Claire's knees nearly buckle.
“She's alive.””
Claire gripped the back of the couch.
“Where?””
May you like
Daniel raised his tear-streaked face.
And pointed toward the basement door.
