Chapter 7: The Person Who Paid Him

“CLAIRE, THE PERSON WHO PAID HIM IS—”

A violent crash from outside swallowed the rest of Vanessa's sentence.

Claire flinched as red and blue lights swept across the living-room windows. A car door slammed. Then came the unmistakable sound of footsteps approaching the front porch.

The police were here.

Daniel looked toward the front door, then at the basement key still lying on the hallway table.

For one terrible second, Claire thought he might run.

Instead, he grabbed the hospital record from her hand.

“Give that back!”” she shouted.

He crumpled the paper into his fist.

“You don't understand what that document means.””

Claire lunged for it.

Daniel backed away, holding the paper against his chest.

“Daniel, let go!””

“You need to listen to me!””

“No! You need to stop deciding what I'm allowed to know!””

Lily started crying on the couch.

“Daddy, please!””

Daniel looked at her, and his expression faltered.

That was all Claire needed.

She snatched the paper from his hand and stumbled backward, holding it against her blouse.

Three sharp knocks sounded at the front door.

“Police! Open up!””

Claire rushed toward the entrance.

Daniel caught her elbow.

“Don't tell them everything.””

She stared at his hand until he released her.

Then she opened the door.

Two uniformed officers stood on the porch, a Black female officer in front and a Black male officer beside her. The female officer immediately noticed Claire's trembling hands and the child crying behind her.

“Ma'am, I'm Officer Brooks. We received a report of someone being held inside the house. Is anyone injured?””

“There's a woman locked in my basement,” Claire said.

“My husband has been hiding her from me.””

Officer Brooks looked past Claire at Daniel.

“Sir, step away from the hallway.””

Daniel raised both hands.

“Officer, this is a misunderstanding.””

“Then you'll have an opportunity to explain it. Right now, I need you to move away from that door.””

Daniel obeyed, but his eyes remained fixed on Claire.

Officer Brooks entered with her partner.

“Ma'am, are there any weapons in the house?””

“Not that I know of.””

“Is your husband threatening you?””

Claire glanced at Daniel.

“He grabbed me when I tried to retrieve something from the basement door.””

Officer Brooks's expression sharpened.

“Sir, keep your hands visible.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes, ma'am.””

The second officer moved toward the hallway while Brooks remained with Claire and Lily.

“What's your daughter's name?”” she asked gently.

“Lily.””

“Hi, Lily. I'm Officer Brooks. Can you stay here with your mother while we check something?””

Lily nodded without looking up.

Claire watched the second officer approach the basement door. He examined the padlock, then crouched to inspect the narrow gap beneath it.

“Someone's definitely down there,” he called.

A faint voice answered from below.

“Please.””

Officer Brooks immediately reached for her radio.

“Dispatch, we have a possible confinement situation. Request medical assistance.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“Don't open it!””

Both officers turned toward him.

Brooks raised her hand.

“Sir, stay where you are.””

“You don't know what's down there!””

“Then help us understand.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She's dangerous.””

Claire stared at him.

“You told me she was a stranger.””

“I said I didn't know what was happening.””

“You said you didn't know her!””

Officer Brooks stepped between them.

“Ma'am, let me handle this.””

The second officer examined the lock again.

“Sir, do you have a key?””

Daniel didn't answer.

“Sir?””

His shoulders slumped.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

She held out her hand.

The key was already in her palm.

Officer Brooks noticed.

“Ma'am, please give the key to my partner.””

Claire handed it over.

The officer inserted the key into the padlock.

It turned with a clean metallic click.

The lock opened.

But before he could remove it, Daniel spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

His eyes had filled with tears.

“There's something you need to know before you let her out.””

Claire felt a chill move through her.

Officer Brooks kept her voice firm.

“Go ahead.””

Daniel stared at the basement door.

“Vanessa didn't come here to rescue her daughter.””

A weak laugh came from below.

“That's what you told yourself, Daniel.””

He ignored her.

“She came because she wanted Lily.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Lily is seven years old. She's not property.””

“I know that!””

“Then stop talking about her like she's something you can trade!””

Officer Brooks held up a hand.

“Both of you, stop. We'll establish the facts.””

The second officer removed the padlock and pulled the basement door open just enough to look inside.

“Ma'am?”” he called.

“Can you hear me?””

“Yes,” Vanessa answered.

“I'm here.””

“Can you come toward the stairs?””

There was a scrape, followed by a weak groan.

“I'm trying.””

The officer disappeared briefly into the opening, then returned to help Vanessa up.

Claire expected to see a terrifying stranger.

Instead, she saw a woman with dark braids, a wrinkled blouse, and a face exhausted by fear. Her wrists were reddened. One knee of her trousers was torn. She held the railing with both hands as she climbed into the bright hallway.

When Vanessa reached the top step, her eyes immediately found Claire.

Neither woman spoke.

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Her lips trembled.

“Oh, my baby.””

Lily pressed herself against Claire.

“Mommy, I don't want her to touch me.””

Claire wrapped both arms around her daughter.

“It's okay. Nobody is going to touch you without your permission.””

Vanessa stopped moving.

She looked as though the words had physically wounded her.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

“I didn't mean to frighten you.””

Officer Brooks guided Vanessa toward a chair and asked her partner to stay with Daniel.

Then she turned to Vanessa.

“Ma'am, tell me what happened.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Daniel locked me downstairs after I told him I was going to the police.””

“Why did you come here?””

“To find my daughter.””

Officer Brooks glanced at Claire.

“And who is your daughter?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Before she could answer, Daniel interrupted.

“She's not going to tell you the truth!””

Brooks turned sharply.

“Sir, you need to stop interrupting.””

Daniel's hands shook at his sides.

“She has been manipulating me for weeks. She wants to take Lily away from me.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You took my child before I even had the chance to hold her properly.””

The hallway went silent.

Claire felt Lily's fingers tighten around hers.

Officer Brooks looked from Vanessa to Daniel.

“Are you claiming this child is biologically yours, ma'am?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I'm claiming Daniel switched two newborns at the hospital seven years ago.””

Claire's breath caught.

Officer Brooks's expression became grave.

“Do you have evidence?””

Vanessa nodded toward the crumpled paper in Claire's hand.

“The original hospital records. And the payment receipt.””

Daniel's face went white.

Claire turned toward him.

“Payment receipt?””

He backed away.

“Claire, don't listen to her.””

Vanessa slowly reached into the pocket of her blouse.

Officer Brooks immediately intervened.

“Ma'am, tell me what you're reaching for.””

“Paper,” Vanessa said.

“Nothing else.””

She withdrew a small, folded envelope and handed it to the officer.

Inside was a bank transfer receipt, dated seven years earlier.

The amount was substantial.

The sender's name had been partially obscured by a torn section of paper, but the recipient's name was clear.

Daniel's.

Officer Brooks examined the document.

“Mr. Daniel, can you explain this transfer?””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

His lips parted.

Then he looked at Claire.

And the expression on his face told her that Vanessa hadn't been exaggerating.

He knew exactly who had paid him.

The front door remained open behind the officers. Neighbors were beginning to gather on the sidewalk, drawn by the police vehicles and the commotion.

But Claire saw none of them.

She saw only her husband.

“Who paid you?”” she whispered.

Daniel closed his eyes.

May you like

And when he finally spoke, he didn't say a name.

He said, “Your mother.””
