Chapter 6: The Name on the Hospital Record

“She's alive.””

Daniel's words seemed to echo through the living room long after he stopped speaking.

Claire stared at him, one hand gripping the couch, the other wrapped around Lily's small fingers.

“Where is she?””

Daniel couldn't meet her eyes.

“Claire, please.””

“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?””

He flinched.

Lily began crying again.

Claire knelt beside her and wiped her cheeks with both hands.

“Baby, I need you to sit right here. Keep your backpack with you. I'm not leaving you.””

Lily nodded, trembling.

Claire stood.

“Now tell me where my daughter is.””

Daniel looked toward the locked basement door.

“She was with Rebecca.””

“Was?””

“Rebecca died seven years ago.””

Claire shook her head.

“You said she died before you met me.””

“I lied.””

The admission came without resistance this time.

Perhaps he had finally run out of places to hide.

“Rebecca died shortly after the babies were born,” Daniel continued.

“There were complications. I was told she wouldn't survive the night.””

Claire's throat tightened.

“And you decided to steal my child?””

“No.””

“You just admitted it!””

“I thought I was saving her!””

“From what?””

Daniel dragged a hand across his face.

“Rebecca's family wanted to take the baby. They said I wasn't stable enough. I was young, I had no money, and I was terrified I'd lose my daughter before I even had a chance to raise her.””

“So you took mine instead?””

He lowered his head.

Claire stepped backward as if the truth had physical weight.

“How did you do it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Daniel.””

“The hospital was chaotic. Two babies were in the same nursery. I knew which bracelet belonged to Rebecca's daughter. I switched it with the other one.””

Claire pressed a hand against her mouth.

“You walked into a hospital nursery and switched two newborn babies?””

“I thought I'd tell you eventually.””

“When?””

“When things were safer.””

“Safer for whom?””

He had no answer.

Claire looked toward Lily.

Her daughter was sitting on the couch, clutching the pink backpack, her little shoulders shaking.

Seven years.

Seven years of bedtime stories, scraped knees, school projects, and whispered reassurances during thunderstorms.

Claire had never once doubted that Lily was hers.

Now every memory seemed to split into two versions: the one she had lived, and the one Daniel had secretly known.

She turned back to him.

“Why is Vanessa in our basement?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Because she found me.””

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

Claire felt her stomach drop.

“Three weeks?””

He nodded.

“She contacted me after finding an old hospital record. She said she'd been searching for her daughter for years. She recognized my name from the paperwork.””

“And instead of telling me, you brought her here and locked her up?””

“I didn't bring her here willingly.””

Claire stared at him.

“Explain.””

Daniel walked to the window, then turned back as if even standing with his back to Claire was too dangerous.

“She came to my office. She had copies of the original birth records and a photograph of Rebecca. She said she knew what I'd done.””

“Did she threaten you?””

“She said she'd go to the police.””

“Good.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You don't understand. If the truth came out, Lily could lose everything.””

“Lily would still be Lily!””

“I know that!””

“Then why did you keep lying?””

He looked at their daughter.

“Because I couldn't bear the thought of her looking at me the way you're looking at me now.””

Claire felt a cold, bitter laugh rise in her throat.

“So you locked Vanessa away to protect your reputation.””

“No. I locked her away because she said she would take Lily.””

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“Why would she take Lily?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she believed Lily was her biological daughter.””

The room fell silent.

Claire looked toward the basement door.

“Vanessa gave birth to Lily?””

Daniel nodded.

“And my biological daughter is the baby in that photograph?””

Another nod.

Claire closed her eyes.

For a moment, she pictured a little girl growing up somewhere without knowing her birth mother. A child who might have inherited her smile, her stubbornness, the tiny crease that appeared between her eyebrows when she concentrated.

A child who had been living someone else's life because Daniel had decided he knew best.

When Claire opened her eyes, Daniel was watching her.

“I can make this right,” he said.

She stared at him.

“How?””

“I'll get Vanessa out. We'll tell the police a version of what happened. We'll arrange DNA tests. We can handle it as a family.””

“A version?””

He swallowed.

“I didn't mean—”

“You're still trying to control the story.””

“Claire, I'm trying to save what's left of our family.””

“No. You're trying to save yourself.””

A faint metallic click came from the basement door.

Both of them turned.

The padlock remained in place.

But something slid beneath the door and landed on the hallway floor.

A folded sheet of paper.

Claire approached it cautiously.

Daniel reached for her.

“Don't.””

She stepped away from him and picked it up.

The paper was creased and worn, with several lines handwritten in blue ink. Claire unfolded it beneath the bright hallway light.

At the top was the name of a hospital.

Below it were two infant records.

One listed Claire's full name as the mother.

The other listed Rebecca's name.

Beside both entries were the same date of birth.

Claire's hands began to shake.

She scanned the document until she reached the bottom.

There were two handwritten names, one beside each infant's original identification number.

The first name was Lily.

The second was Claire's own name, written in a way that made her heart stumble.

Beneath it was a note.

*DO NOT TRUST DANIEL'S VERSION OF THE SWITCH.*

Claire read it twice.

Then she looked toward the door.

“Vanessa,” she called, “who wrote this?””

A long silence followed.

Then Vanessa answered.

“I did.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

He had gone completely pale.

“What does she mean?”” Claire demanded.

Daniel shook his head.

“She wants you to doubt everything.””

Claire raised the paper.

“Is this a real hospital record?””

“I don't know.””

“Stop lying!””

“I swear to you, Claire, I don't know where she got it!””

From the basement came a soft, tired laugh.

“You still think he switched the bracelets because he loved me?””

Daniel slammed his fist against the wall.

“ENOUGH!””

Vanessa continued anyway.

“He didn't take your baby because he was afraid of losing mine. He took her because someone paid him to.””

Claire felt the floor seem to disappear beneath her feet.

Daniel stared at the basement door.

His lips moved, but no words came out.

Claire turned slowly toward him.

“Someone paid you?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa's voice grew stronger.

“Ask him about the envelope. Ask him what he did with the money.””

Claire stared at her husband.

“Daniel?””

He took one step backward.

“I can explain.””

She held the paper between them.

“Who paid you to switch our babies?””

He looked at Lily.

Then at Claire.

Then at the locked basement door.

Finally, he whispered, “You weren't supposed to find out.””

From outside came the distant sound of sirens.

Daniel's face crumpled.

Claire tightened her grip on the hospital record.

And beneath their feet, Vanessa began shouting one final sentence.

“CLAIRE, THE PERSON WHO PAID HIM IS—”
