Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew
Claire heard the words.
She understood every one of them.
But for several seconds, her mind refused to connect them.
“My mother is dead,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“I know.””
“No. You don't get to say that. My mother died six years ago.””
Officer Brooks stepped closer.
“Mr. Daniel, are you identifying the sender as Claire's mother?””
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“Yes.””
Claire shook her head.
“That's impossible.””
Vanessa sat rigidly in the chair, her eyes fixed on the envelope in the officer's hands.
Daniel spoke again.
“Your mother contacted me before Lily was born. She said she knew about Rebecca and the baby. She offered to help me keep my daughter.””
Claire felt as though the air had been sucked from the room.
“You knew my mother before we got married?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She came to my office.””
“Why would she do that?””
Daniel looked toward Lily.
“Because she didn't trust you to make the right decisions.””
Claire recoiled.
“My mother loved me.””
“I know she did.””
“Then don't you dare use her name to justify what you've done!””
Officer Brooks raised her hand.
“Ma'am, take a breath. We'll need to verify the document and establish the timeline.””
Claire barely heard her.
She was remembering her mother's last months in the hospital. The way the older woman had squeezed her hand and asked about Lily's school pictures. The way she had smiled whenever Claire brought the child to visit.
Her mother had always seemed particularly protective of Lily.
Claire had once thought it was because Lily was her first grandchild.
Now another possibility opened before her, and she hated herself for considering it.
“What did my mother tell you?”” Claire asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“Daniel.””
“She said you were unstable.””
Claire stared at him.
“What?””
“She said you were struggling. That you were afraid of becoming a mother. That you had told her you weren't ready.””
“That is a lie.””
“I know that now.””
“You knew me! You were there when Lily was born!””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what? Me?””
“Of losing my daughter.””
Claire pointed toward Lily.
“She is my daughter!””
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Your mother didn't offer him money because she wanted him to keep his daughter.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Vanessa struggled to sit upright.
“She offered him money because she wanted him to take Rebecca's baby away from me.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“That's not what happened.””
“Then explain why the payment came from her private account.””
Officer Brooks examined the receipt again.
“Do you have additional records?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I have copies of the messages she sent Daniel. I found them in an old email account after I located his name in the hospital records.””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn't you bring them to the police immediately?””
“I tried.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“I called him first because I thought he might tell me where my daughter was. I thought he might have regretted what he did.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I didn't know he'd lock me in a basement.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You threatened to expose everything.””
“Yes!””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“I searched for my daughter for seven years! I spent birthdays wondering whether she was alive. I went to hospitals, social services offices, and police stations. I showed people that photograph until I could barely stand looking at it.””
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“And all that time, you were raising her.””
She looked at Lily.
The little girl pressed her face into Claire's side.
Vanessa immediately lowered her gaze.
“I know she doesn't know me,” she whispered.
“I know I'm a stranger to her. But she deserved the truth.””
Claire swallowed hard.
“Why did you say my mother paid him?””
Vanessa looked toward the officers.
“Because I recognized the name on the transfer. I saw it in the messages.””
“What messages?””
Vanessa took a slow breath.
“Your mother believed she was protecting you from something.””
Claire stared at her.
“Protecting me from what?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“She believed Daniel was going to leave you. She thought if he had a child with someone else, he would eventually abandon you and take everything with him.””
Claire felt sick.
“So she paid him to switch the babies?””
“That's what the messages suggest.””
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“Those messages were taken out of context!””
Officer Brooks immediately blocked his path.
“Step back.””
He stopped.
Claire turned toward him.
“What context could possibly make this acceptable?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never wanted any of this.””
“But you accepted the money.””
“Yes.””
“You raised Lily knowing she wasn't biologically yours?””
His face crumpled.
“I loved her.””
Claire's eyes filled.
“That's not what I asked.””
“Yes,” he whispered.
“I knew.””
The admission hurt more than the rest.
Not because Claire loved Lily any less.
Because she now understood that every ordinary day of her daughter's life had been built around a secret someone had deliberately protected.
Officer Brooks spoke into her radio, requesting that the hospital records and financial documents be preserved for investigators. Her partner remained beside Daniel, who had stopped resisting and now stared at the floor.
Then Lily tugged gently on Claire's sleeve.
“Mommy?””
Claire knelt.
“I'm here.””
“Is Grandma a bad person?””
The question pierced her.
Claire looked into her daughter's frightened eyes.
“I don't know, baby.””
“Did she make Daddy do something bad?””
Claire swallowed.
“Adults are responsible for the choices they make. Even when someone tells them to do something wrong.””
Lily thought about that.
“Does that mean Daddy doesn't love me?””
Daniel made a broken sound behind them.
Claire held Lily's face gently between her hands.
“No. Whatever happens, you are loved. And none of this is your fault.””
Lily threw her arms around her mother's neck.
Claire held her tightly, fighting to keep her own fear from spilling into the embrace.
A few minutes later, an officer approached with a tablet.
“Claire, we're going to need your cooperation with the investigation. We also need to discuss temporary arrangements for your daughter while the hospital records are reviewed.””
Claire nodded.
“Of course.””
Daniel suddenly looked up.
“Don't let them take her.””
Officer Brooks remained firm.
“Sir, nobody has made that determination. You need to let the process happen.””
Daniel turned to Claire.
“Please. Don't let them separate us.””
She looked at him for a long moment.
“You separated me from my biological child seven years ago.””
He went silent.
Then Claire said something she had never imagined saying to her husband.
“I won't help you hide the truth anymore.””
The officers escorted Daniel toward the front door to speak with another investigator outside. He didn't resist, but he turned back twice, looking at Lily as if he expected her to call him home.
She didn't.
Vanessa remained in the living room with a medical responder checking her wrists and asking whether she needed to go to the hospital.
Claire watched her from across the room.
This woman had been a stranger when the afternoon began.
Now she was the mother of the little girl Claire had raised.
And Claire was the mother of the child Vanessa had spent seven years searching for.
Neither woman had chosen this.
Neither had deserved it.
When Vanessa finally looked up, her eyes were full of uncertainty.
“Claire,” she whispered, “there's one more thing you need to know.””
Claire's stomach tightened.
“What?””
Vanessa glanced toward the open front door, where Daniel stood beside an officer.
“Your mother didn't just pay him to switch the babies.””
Claire felt her heart begin to pound.
“What else did she do?””
May you like
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
“She told him which baby to leave with you.””
