Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Door

The woman’s words landed harder than the scissors had.

“Nia deserves to know the truth.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

The restaurant that had been filled with wedding music, laughter, and celebration became something else entirely.

A courtroom.

A battlefield.

A place where secrets came to die.

I stood there in my torn happiness, one hand still touching the uneven edge of my hair, trying to understand why a stranger had walked into my wedding and why my mother-in-law looked like she wanted to disappear.

Adrian stepped down from the stage.

He didn’t look away from Loretta.

Not even once.

“Gloria,” he said quietly, “thank you for coming.””

The woman nodded.

“Adrian, I almost didn’t.””

Loretta’s eyes widened.

“Adrian?””

Her voice cracked.

“You brought her here?””

Nobody missed the fear hidden behind those words.

Not anger.

Fear.

I looked at Adrian.

“You know her?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

That single word made my stomach tighten.

“How?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because I realized there was still something he hadn’t told me.

Something big.

Loretta immediately stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Her voice became louder.

“She’s trying to ruin my son’s wedding.””

Gloria calmly looked at her.

“You already did that yourself.””

A few guests gasped.

Loretta’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to walk in here after all these years and pretend you’re some kind of hero.””

Gloria didn’t react.

“I’m not here to be a hero.””

She glanced at me.

“I’m here because she deserves the truth before she spends another day believing a lie.””

My chest tightened.

“What lie?””

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that silence frightened me more than anything else.

I looked at Adrian.

“Please.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“Tell me what’s happening.””

Adrian came closer.

The man I had married.

The man who had held my hand when I cried.

The man who promised me honesty.

But at that moment, he looked like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hide anymore.

“Nia…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t say my name like that. Just tell me.””

He looked down.

“I should have told you before tonight.””

My heart dropped.

Before tonight.

Those three words were enough.

“How long have you known?””

Adrian looked at Gloria.

Then back at me.

“Six months.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Six months.

Six months of planning a wedding.

Six months of choosing flowers.

Six months of picking invitations.

Six months of him looking into my eyes while holding something back.

I stepped away from him.

“You knew something was wrong with your mother?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed softly.

A broken laugh.

“Protect me?””

I looked around the room.

“At my wedding, your mother grabbed my hair and cut it in front of everyone.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to say you protected me when you let me walk into this room blind.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed him to feel it.

Because I had spent too much time making excuses for people who hurt me.

Gloria stepped closer.

“Nia, I understand why you’re angry.””

I looked at her.

“You’re a stranger.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

The older woman took a slow breath.

“Because twenty-nine years ago, I trusted Loretta.””

The room became quiet again.

Loretta immediately interrupted.

“Stop.””

It was the first time she sounded desperate.

Not annoyed.

Not controlling.

Desperate.

“Don’t do this here.””

Gloria looked at her.

“Why? Because people might finally hear what happened?””

Loretta’s hands curled into fists.

“You have no right.””

“I have every right.””

Gloria’s voice remained calm.

“That was my daughter.””

A chill moved through me.

My eyes shifted between them.

Daughter?

Adrian looked down.

And suddenly, I understood something.

This wasn’t just about Loretta.

This was about Adrian.

“Adrian,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“What does she mean?””

His silence answered before his words did.

Gloria’s expression softened.

“Your husband was not always Loretta’s son.””

The room went completely still.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

“What?””

Loretta’s face went pale.

Adrian looked like he had been preparing for this moment but still wasn’t ready.

Gloria continued.

“When Adrian was two years old, my daughter and I lost everything.””

Loretta shook her head.

“Don’t.””

Gloria ignored her.

“She was young. She was scared. She trusted the wrong people.””

I looked at Adrian.

He looked away.

“Adrian was adopted,” Gloria said.

The word hung in the air.

Adopted.

My mind raced.

I thought about all the conversations I had with Adrian.

All the stories about his childhood.

All the times he talked about his mother.

“I don’t understand,” I said.

Gloria looked at Loretta.

“Because Loretta made sure nobody understood.””

Loretta suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Her voice cut through the room.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Gloria looked almost sad.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

“No one asked you to come.””

“Your son did.””

Loretta turned toward Adrian.

“You betrayed me.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“No, Mom.””

He shook his head.

“I spent my whole life trying to make you happy.””

His voice cracked.

“I defended you.””

Loretta stared at him.

“I raised you.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“You did.””

Then he looked at Gloria.

“But you also lied to me.””

The words hit Loretta harder than anything else.

Because she didn’t deny it.

I noticed that.

She didn’t say, “That’s impossible.””

She didn’t say, “She’s lying.””

She only looked afraid.

I slowly walked toward Adrian.

“What exactly did she lie about?””

He looked at me.

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Birth records.””

My breathing stopped.

“Adrian…”

“I found them in her office.””

Loretta’s face changed.

“You had no right to go through my things.””

“There was a name on them.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian looked at Gloria.

Then at Loretta.

“The name wasn’t yours.””

A cold silence filled the restaurant.

I looked at Loretta.

The woman who had cut my hair.

The woman who had controlled every detail of her son’s life.

The woman who acted like she owned every room she entered.

Suddenly, she looked smaller.

Human.

Afraid.

Gloria reached into her purse.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I didn’t come here to destroy your wedding.””

She looked at me.

“I came because you married a man who deserves to know where he came from.””

She handed the envelope to Adrian.

His fingers trembled as he took it.

“What is this?””

“Everything Loretta tried to hide.””

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

He stared at it.

Then his face changed.

I moved closer.

“What do you see?””

He couldn’t answer.

His eyes filled with tears.

Gloria whispered:

“The woman standing beside you in that picture…”

She looked directly at Loretta.

“Is the woman who gave birth to you.””

Loretta suddenly grabbed her purse.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, no, no…”

She backed away.

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

Then at Loretta.

“Why?””

The question came from somewhere deep inside him.

“Why would you hide my own mother from me?””

Loretta didn’t answer.

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the phones recording.

At Gloria.

At me.

Then she turned toward the exit.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Where are you going?””

Loretta stopped.

For one second, I thought she would finally confess.

Instead, she whispered:

“You have no idea what you just invited into your life.””

Then she walked toward the door.

But before she reached it, Gloria spoke.

“Loretta.””

She stopped.

“You’re still afraid of the same thing after all these years.””

Loretta slowly turned.

“What?””

Gloria held her gaze.

“Someone finding the second name on the birth certificate.””

Loretta’s face went completely blank.

Adrian looked down at the paper in his hand.

Then his eyes widened.

Because beneath the first name…

There was another name.

A name nobody in the room expected to see.

And when Adrian whispered it out loud, Loretta’s secret finally began to break apart.

“Wait…”

May you like

He looked at Gloria.

“Who is Marcus?””
