Chapter 9: The Truth Written in Blood
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The words from Marcus’s phone echoed through the abandoned hospital basement.
“She changed the children.””
I looked at Adrian.
Then at Jordan.
Two men standing in front of each other.
Two lives connected by a lie.
Two people who had spent years searching for answers that kept changing every time they got close.
Adrian slowly lowered the document.
“What does that mean?””
No one answered.
Not Loretta.
Not Gloria.
Not Renee.
Not even Marcus.
The silence was unbearable.
Adrian looked around the room.
“No.””
His voice became firmer.
“Not again.””
Everyone looked at him.
“No more secrets.””
He held up the paper.
“I am done finding out pieces of my own life from strangers.””
His eyes moved to Loretta.
“Tell me.””
She stared at him.
“Tell me what you did.””
For once, Loretta looked old.
Not elegant.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
A woman who had spent twenty-six years running from one moment.
And finally ran out of places to hide.
“I was scared.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That is not an answer.””
Loretta looked at Jordan.
Then at him.
“I was afraid of losing everything.””
Jordan laughed bitterly.
“You already lost everything.””
Loretta ignored him.
“Your grandfather created a trust.””
Adrian frowned.
“What trust?””
“The family estate.””
Gloria nodded slowly.
“The one Marcus inherited.””
Loretta looked at Adrian.
“When you were born, Marcus became the next person in line.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“And?””
“And if something happened to him, the inheritance would pass to his child.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
I understood before Adrian did.
“You.””
Loretta looked at me.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“You wanted Adrian because of the inheritance.””
Her face tightened.
“I wanted to protect my family.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“Don’t call it that.””
Loretta looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“I understand perfectly.””
He pointed at Adrian.
“You took him.””
Then at himself.
“You erased me.””
His eyes filled.
“You made both of us into something we weren’t.””
Loretta looked away.
Adrian stared at her.
“So what happened that night?””
Nobody moved.
Finally, Marcus spoke through the phone.
“Tell them, Loretta.””
She closed her eyes.
And for the first time, she stopped fighting.
“Evelyn was going to leave.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What?””
“She found out about the money.””
Gloria’s face hardened.
“She found out you were stealing.””
Loretta nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The admission shocked everyone.
“She wanted to take Adrian and leave with Marcus.””
Adrian whispered:
“My mother tried to save me.””
“Yes.””
Loretta looked at him.
“She did.””
A tear fell from her eye.
“But I couldn’t let her.””
Nobody spoke.
“You couldn’t let her?””
Adrian repeated the words.
“You destroyed my family because you couldn’t let her?””
Loretta looked down.
“I thought I could fix everything.””
Jordan laughed.
“You thought kidnapping children would fix everything?””
Loretta looked at him.
“I didn’t plan for you.””
The words hit him.
Hard.
“What?””
“I didn’t know Renee would be there.””
Renee stepped forward.
Her voice trembled.
“Tell the truth.””
Loretta looked at her.
“I saw the opportunity.””
Renee’s face changed.
“You saw two babies and an opportunity?””
Loretta looked away.
“I saw a way out.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Adrian’s eyes filled with anger.
“What happened next?””
Loretta swallowed.
“I changed the records.””
“Both of them?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Jordan.
“Because I needed everyone to believe Adrian was mine.””
Jordan shook his head.
“But I was there.””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
Loretta’s voice became softer.
“I didn’t know what to do with you.””
A horrible silence followed.
Renee covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You abandoned a child.””
Loretta looked at him.
“I didn’t.””
“You disappeared him.””
She had no answer.
Adrian looked sick.
“So where did the switch happen?””
Loretta looked at the old hospital walls.
“At Northbridge.””
Everyone waited.
“The nurse who helped me moved the files.””
“Renee?””
Loretta nodded.
“She had no choice.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“She threatened my son.””
“Yes.””
Jordan looked at Renee.
“You knew?””
Tears filled Renee’s eyes.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Then why didn’t you find me?””
The pain in his voice was devastating.
“I tried.””
Renee’s voice broke.
“I tried every day.””
She looked at Loretta.
“She made sure nobody listened.””
Adrian looked back at the document.
“But the blood test.””
Everyone became quiet.
That was the question.
The final piece.
“If the records were changed…”
He looked at Jordan.
“Then who is he?””
Renee looked at Jordan.
And her expression broke.
“I don’t know.””
Jordan stepped backward.
“No.””
His voice became smaller.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Jordan…”
“Don’t.””
The pain in his voice stopped Adrian.
“I spent my whole life knowing who I was.””
He looked at Renee.
“Then I found out I was stolen.””
He looked at Loretta.
“Then I found out I was hidden.””
Then at Adrian.
“And now I might not even know my own name.””
Nobody knew what to say.
Because there was no easy answer.
A person could survive almost anything.
But losing yourself was different.
Marcus spoke again.
“Jordan.””
Everyone looked at the phone.
Marcus’s voice was weak.
“But you need to know something.””
Jordan stared.
“What?””
“You are my son.””
Silence.
Adrian looked up.
“What?””
Marcus continued.
“The records were changed. The blood tests were changed.””
Loretta’s face went pale.
“What?””
Marcus laughed softly.
“You thought you could control everything.””
Loretta stepped closer to the phone.
“Where did you get those tests?””
Marcus ignored her.
“Jordan is my son.””
Adrian froze.
“Then what am I?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus said:
“You are Evelyn’s son.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Gloria gasped.
Renee looked confused.
Marcus continued.
“The night Loretta took you, she assumed the inheritance followed blood.””
Adrian shook his head.
“But it didn’t?””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice became emotional.
“It followed love.””
The words confused everyone.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus continued.
“Your grandfather changed the trust after my father died.””
A pause.
“He knew people would fight over money.””
Gloria whispered:
“He created a condition.””
Marcus said:
“The inheritance only went to the child raised by both parents.””
Everyone became silent.
Adrian understood.
“Because family wasn’t blood.””
Marcus answered:
“Exactly.””
Loretta’s face collapsed.
All these years.
All the lies.
All the destruction.
And the thing she wanted most had never depended on the thing she stole.
“The inheritance…”
Adrian whispered.
“It was never about me being your son.””
Marcus answered:
“No.””
A pause.
“It was about whether you were loved.””
Loretta suddenly stepped backward.
Her entire reason for everything had disappeared.
She hadn’t stolen a child.
She had stolen a life.
And gained nothing.
Adrian looked at her.
“I could have been loved by everyone.””
Loretta cried silently.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You don’t.””
He looked at Jordan.
“You took that from him too.””
Loretta whispered:
“I was trying to survive.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Everyone you hurt was trying to survive too.””
Nobody defended her.
Not anymore.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked toward the basement entrance.
“We need to leave.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel lowered the phone.
“Because the police just arrived.””
Everyone froze.
Gloria looked confused.
“Police?””
Daniel nodded.
“They’re not here for Loretta.””
A bad feeling moved through me.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“They’re here because someone reported a kidnapping from twenty-six years ago.””
Adrian stared.
“Who reported it?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“The report was filed tonight.””
A pause.
“By Evelyn.””
Everyone looked at the woman standing near the door.
Evelyn shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
The lights flickered.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A voice everyone recognized.
A voice filled with hatred.
“Neither did I.””
Everyone turned.
A man stepped into the doorway.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.
Marcus.
He looked at Adrian.
Then at Jordan.
Then at Loretta.
And finally he said:
“The person who filed that report…”
He took a breath.
“Was the person who stole my children.””
His eyes moved behind us.
And everyone followed his gaze.
Standing in the darkness behind the hospital doors…
was someone none of us expected.
Someone who had been hiding closer than anyone.
Someone Loretta had spent twenty-six years protecting.
“My name is Renee Carter.””
The woman beside Jordan froze.
Because another voice answered:
“No.””
A woman stepped forward from the shadows.
“You’re not Renee.””
She looked at Jordan.
“I am.””
Jordan stared.
The woman smiled.
And whispered:
“I’m your real mother.””
The room exploded into chaos.
May you like
Because there were two women claiming the same child.
And only one of them was telling the truth.
