Chapter 8: The Father Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
Not even Loretta.
The phone remained on the floor where she had dropped it.
The screen was still glowing.
The call was still connected.
And somewhere on the other end was a man everyone believed was gone forever.
Adrian stared at the phone.
“My father?””
His voice barely existed.
Loretta didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
For the first time since I had met her, she looked completely powerless.
Not because someone challenged her.
Not because someone exposed her.
But because the past she had buried had just called her by name.
Daniel slowly stepped toward the phone.
“Pick it up.””
Nobody responded.
“Pick it up,” he repeated.
Loretta looked at him.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Adrian noticed.
“You’re afraid.””
Her eyes moved toward him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He pointed at the phone.
“You’re afraid of whoever is on that line.””
Loretta’s face tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
His voice grew stronger.
“I don’t.””
He stepped closer.
“But I’m tired of not understanding.””
The words were quiet.
But everyone felt them.
Adrian had spent his entire life accepting missing pieces.
A missing father.
A missing mother.
A missing history.
Not anymore.
He picked up the phone.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a weak voice answered.
“Adrian.””
The sound of that name from a stranger’s mouth made him freeze.
The voice was old.
Tired.
But emotional.
Adrian swallowed.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m the man who should have been there for you.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
I watched every emotion cross his face.
Anger.
Hope.
Pain.
A child wanting answers from a father he never knew.
“Marcus?””
The voice on the phone became unsteady.
“Yes.””
Nobody breathed.
Even Loretta looked like she had stopped existing for a moment.
Adrian gripped the phone harder.
“You’re alive.””
“I am.””
“You let me believe you abandoned me.””
The silence on the other end lasted too long.
Then Marcus said:
“I never abandoned you.””
Adrian laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
“Everyone says that after twenty-six years.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
His voice cracked.
“Do you know what it feels like growing up thinking your own father didn’t want you?””
A painful silence.
Then Marcus answered:
“No.””
Adrian looked surprised.
“No?””
“Because I spent twenty-six years knowing my son was taken from me.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Adrian looked away.
Marcus continued.
“I searched for you.””
“Then why didn’t you find me?””
“Because Loretta made sure I couldn’t.””
Everyone looked at Loretta.
She lowered her eyes.
Adrian noticed.
“You did.””
Loretta whispered:
“I had to.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You chose.””
That word hurt her.
Because it was true.
Marcus continued on the phone.
“Adrian, listen to me carefully.””
Adrian brought the phone closer.
“What?””
“You need to leave that building.””
Everyone froze.
“Why?””
“Because Loretta is not the only person who wants this secret buried.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Daniel looked around the abandoned hospital.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus answered:
“It means someone else knew about the switch.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“The switch?””
The voice on the phone became silent.
Then:
“Who is that?””
Adrian looked at Jordan.
“My brother.””
Another pause.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Jordan?””
Jordan’s face changed.
“You know me?””
“I know your mother.””
Jordan stepped closer.
“Where is she?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
And that silence said too much.
Daniel looked at Jordan.
“Marcus.””
The voice became weaker.
“I’m sorry.””
Jordan’s expression hardened.
“No.””
His voice shook.
“Where is Renee?””
Marcus said nothing.
Jordan grabbed the phone from Adrian.
“Where is my mother?””
The anger in his voice filled the room.
“She spent her whole life looking for me.””
A pause.
“Where is she?””
Finally, Marcus answered:
“She’s safe.””
Jordan closed his eyes.
For one second, relief appeared.
Then Marcus added:
“But she knows the truth.””
Jordan opened his eyes.
“What truth?””
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“The truth about which baby left the hospital that night.””
Everyone went still.
Adrian looked at Jordan.
The question returned.
Which one of them was really supposed to be there?
Marcus continued.
“I found the original records.””
Loretta’s head snapped up.
“You’re lying.””
For the first time, fear turned into panic.
Marcus heard her.
“You still sound the same, Loretta.””
She stepped toward the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I spent twenty-six years asking you that.””
Her face changed.
Adrian watched her.
“Mom?””
She ignored him.
“Where are you?””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Still trying to control the ending?””
The lights above us flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire basement went dark.
Someone gasped.
I grabbed Adrian’s arm.
“Everyone okay?””
A phone flashlight turned on.
Then another.
Daniel looked toward the door.
“It’s open.””
Nobody had opened it.
The basement entrance slowly moved wider.
A shadow appeared.
Adrian stepped in front of me.
“Who’s there?””
A figure entered.
A woman.
Older.
Carrying a small bag.
Jordan froze.
“No.””
The woman looked at him.
And tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Jordan.””
The entire room stopped.
Daniel whispered:
“Renee.””
Jordan stared.
He couldn’t move.
For eight years, he had believed she was gone.
For twenty-six years, he had believed his family had forgotten him.
And now she was standing right there.
“Mom?””
The woman broke.
She crossed the room and grabbed him.
“My baby.””
Jordan collapsed into the hug.
The anger disappeared.
The bitterness disappeared.
For a moment, he was just a child who had finally found his mother.
I looked at Adrian.
He watched silently.
And I knew exactly what he was thinking.
He had found his mother.
Jordan had found his.
But the question remained.
Why had they been separated?
Renee slowly stepped away from Jordan.
Her eyes moved to Adrian.
She began crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Why are you apologizing to me?””
Renee looked at Marcus’s phone.
Then at Loretta.
“Because I know what happened.””
Loretta backed away.
“No.””
Renee looked at her.
“You can’t stop it anymore.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Renee took a deep breath.
“The night you were taken…”
She looked at both men.
“Loretta didn’t choose randomly.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Renee looked at Jordan.
Then at Adrian.
“She knew one of you was valuable.””
The room became silent.
“Valuable?””
Renee nodded.
“Because of your bloodline.””
Nobody understood.
Until Gloria spoke.
“Marcus.””
Renee nodded.
“Marcus’s family had an inheritance.””
Daniel frowned.
“But Loretta already had money.””
Renee looked at him.
“Not enough.””
The pieces started connecting.
Loretta didn’t just want control.
She wanted a future.
A future built on someone else’s identity.
Adrian looked at her.
“So you took me because of money?””
Loretta’s face twisted.
“I took care of you.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You owned me.””
Her eyes filled.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you hide everyone?””
She had no answer.
Renee reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
“I found this before Loretta found me.””
She handed it to Adrian.
Inside was a document.
An old hospital report.
Two names.
Two babies.
Two birth dates.
But one line at the bottom had been circled.
Adrian read it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What does it say?””
He looked up.
His voice barely worked.
“The blood test results.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“What about them?””
Adrian looked at both of them.
“There was a mistake.””
Nobody understood.
Then he said:
“The hospital didn’t switch us.””
Silence.
“Loretta did.””
Loretta closed her eyes.
Adrian held the paper.
“And the test proves something.””
He looked at Jordan.
Then at me.
“Something that changes everything.””
“What?”” I asked.
He looked terrified.
“Marcus is my father.””
A pause.
Then he looked at Jordan.
“But Jordan…”
His voice broke.
“Jordan is not Renee’s son.””
Nobody moved.
Because the impossible truth had just become something worse.
Jordan stared.
“What?””
Adrian looked down at the paper again.
And whispered:
“He’s not my brother.””
The room fell silent.
Then Marcus’s voice came through the phone one last time.
“Adrian…”
Everyone turned.
The voice was shaking.
“Don’t believe what that paper says.””
Adrian froze.
“Why?””
Marcus answered:
“Because Loretta didn’t just change the records.””
May you like
A pause.
“She changed the children.””
