Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Hidden

The word stayed in the air.

Brother.

I looked at the man standing beside Loretta.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at the man.

It felt impossible.

Like looking at a reflection that had somehow stepped out of a mirror.

They had the same eyes.

The same sharp jawline.

The same quiet intensity.

But there was something different.

Adrian looked shocked.

The other man looked prepared.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

For years.

Adrian slowly stepped forward.

“Jordan?””

The man smiled faintly.

“Yes.””

Adrian stared at him.

“I don’t understand.””

Jordan looked around the abandoned hospital room.

“Neither did I.””

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I spent my whole life wondering why nobody came for me.””

Adrian looked at Loretta.

Then back at Jordan.

“What happened?””

Loretta immediately stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Nobody moved.

Because everyone heard it.

Not anger.

Fear.

Again.

The same fear she had shown when Gloria walked into the wedding.

When the photograph appeared.

When the letter was opened.

Loretta was not afraid of the truth.

She was afraid of who would tell it.

Jordan glanced at her.

“You always say that.””

His smile disappeared.

“You always say enough when people get close.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You know her?””

Jordan laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“I know her better than anyone.””

Loretta’s face tightened.

“Jordan.””

The way she said his name was different.

Not like Adrian.

Not like a son.

Like someone trying to control a situation.

“Don’t do this.””

Jordan looked at her.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

He tilted his head.

“Everything?””

His eyes moved toward Adrian.

“You mean the life you stole from him?””

Adrian flinched.

I reached for his hand.

He was shaking.

Not from fear.

From trying to process too much at once.

His mother.

His brother.

His childhood.

His entire identity.

All of it had changed in one night.

“Why?”” Adrian asked.

Jordan looked at him.

“Why what?””

“Why did she take me?””

Jordan’s expression changed.

For the first time, the confidence disappeared.

“Because she needed a replacement.””

The words were quiet.

But they hit like a scream.

Adrian stared.

“A replacement?””

Jordan nodded.

“After everything happened, Loretta needed people to believe she still had control.””

Gloria stepped forward.

“What happened that night?””

Jordan looked at her.

“You know some of it.””

“I want the truth.””

He nodded.

“So do I.””

Jordan looked at Adrian.

“Twenty-six years ago, Loretta was desperate.””

Loretta interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Jordan ignored her.

“She had spent years building a perfect image. Wealth. Family. Respect.””

He laughed softly.

“But behind closed doors, everything was falling apart.””

Adrian looked at Loretta.

“What did you do?””

For once, Loretta didn’t answer.

Jordan continued.

“Marcus discovered she had been moving money from the family trust.””

Gloria nodded.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Jordan shook his head.

“You know the beginning.””

The room became silent.

“She wasn’t just taking money.””

He looked at Loretta.

“She was planning to disappear.””

Adrian frowned.

“Disappear?””

Jordan nodded.

“She had debts. Enemies. People looking for answers.””

Loretta’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Jordan smiled sadly.

“It is.””

He stepped closer.

“You remember the night you left, don’t you?””

Loretta said nothing.

Jordan continued.

“You told everyone you were protecting Adrian.””

His eyes moved to Adrian.

“But the truth was she needed a child to make her story believable.””

Adrian looked confused.

“What story?””

Jordan answered:

“That she was still a mother.””

The words were cruel.

But something about them felt true.

Loretta had spent years controlling Adrian’s life.

His choices.

His relationships.

His memories.

Like she was terrified he would discover something.

“Why me?”” Adrian asked.

Jordan looked at him.

“Because you were the child everyone knew existed.””

Adrian went still.

“And you?””

Jordan looked away.

“I was the child nobody knew about.””

The silence that followed was painful.

I looked at Gloria.

She had tears in her eyes.

“You were Renee’s son.””

Jordan nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened to Renee?””

His face changed.

“She tried to find me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“My sister never stopped looking.””

Jordan looked at him.

“I know.””

Daniel froze.

“You know?””

Jordan nodded.

“She found me.””

Everyone stopped.

“When?””

Jordan looked at the floor.

“Eight years ago.””

Adrian’s eyes widened.

“And you didn’t tell anyone?””

Jordan’s expression became painful.

“I tried.””

“Then why?””

“Because Loretta found me first.””

The room became colder.

Adrian looked at Loretta.

“You knew?””

Loretta said nothing.

Jordan answered for her.

“Yes.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“She knew where you were?””

“Yes.””

“For eight years?””

Jordan nodded.

The anger on Adrian’s face was different now.

Not confusion.

Not pain.

Rage.

“You knew my brother was alive?””

Loretta finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Adrian laughed.

A broken, angry laugh.

“Protect me?””

He stepped toward her.

“You hid my mother.””

He pointed toward Jordan.

“You hid my brother.””

His voice rose.

“And you made me believe I was abandoned.””

Loretta’s eyes filled with tears.

“I had no choice.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Everyone says that when they hurt people.””

The words silenced her.

Because they were true.

Gloria moved closer to Evelyn.

The woman who had been standing quietly near the door.

“Evelyn.””

Adrian turned.

The older woman looked at him.

After twenty-six years, they were finally standing in the same room.

Mother and son.

Neither knew what to say.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Adrian’s face broke.

“No.””

She started crying.

“I searched for you.””

He looked at her.

“I thought you left me.””

“I know.””

“I thought I wasn’t worth staying for.””

Her expression shattered.

“Oh, Adrian.””

She stepped forward.

“I spent every day wishing I could tell you that wasn’t true.””

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The secrets.

The lies.

The anger.

There was just a mother looking at the son she lost.

And a son looking at the mother he never stopped missing.

They hugged.

And for the first time that night, something felt right.

But it didn’t last.

Because Jordan suddenly spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

Jordan hesitated.

Then looked at Loretta.

“She didn’t just take us.””

Loretta’s face changed.

“Jordan.””

He continued.

“She switched us.””

The room went silent.

I felt my stomach drop.

“What do you mean?””

Jordan looked at Adrian.

“After the hospital.””

Adrian stared.

“After the hospital?””

Jordan nodded.

“The records were changed because Loretta needed people to believe she had taken one child.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Jordan.””

But Jordan continued.

“She needed one child to disappear completely.””

Adrian whispered:

“Which one?””

Jordan looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw fear on his face.

“The problem is…”

He paused.

“We don’t know.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Jordan took a breath.

“The records were destroyed.””

Gloria shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Jordan looked at her.

“The original files were burned.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then how do you know?””

Jordan looked at Adrian.

“Because Loretta told me.””

Every person turned toward her.

Loretta stood frozen.

Adrian’s voice was low.

“You told him?””

She closed her eyes.

“I had to.””

“Why?””

Her answer came out barely above a whisper.

“Because one of you is not who you think you are.””

The room went silent.

Even Jordan looked surprised.

Adrian stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Loretta looked at both men.

At the two sons standing in front of her.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

“One of you is Marcus’s son.””

A pause.

“And one of you is not.””

No one breathed.

Because suddenly the question was no longer who was stolen.

It was worse.

Who was pretending to be someone else?

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Gloria stepped backward.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

But Loretta looked directly at Adrian.

And her eyes held something that terrified me.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Certainty.

“I spent twenty-six years protecting the truth.””

She looked at Jordan.

“Now you’re going to find out which one of you was never supposed to be there.””

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Loretta looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

And when she answered, the voice on the other end said something that made her drop the phone.

A man.

Older.

Weak.

But alive.

“Loretta…”

She whispered:

“No.””

The voice continued:

“You failed.””

Loretta stepped backward.

Because she knew exactly who was calling.

Adrian looked at her.

“Who is that?””

Loretta stared at the phone.

Then slowly looked at the two brothers.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your father.””
