Chapter 4: The Letter From the Dead

The envelope shook in Adrian’s hand.

Not because it was heavy.

Because it carried a name.

A name that had followed him through his entire life without ever being spoken.

I watched him stare at the handwriting on the front.

His name.

Written by someone who was supposed to be gone.

The restaurant remained frozen around us.

The wedding cake sat untouched.

The flowers that had taken months to arrange now stood as silent witnesses to a family secret unraveling in real time.

Nobody cared about the celebration anymore.

Nobody cared about the music.

Everyone was waiting for Adrian to open that envelope.

Finally, he looked at Gloria.

“Who wrote this?””

Gloria’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Your mother.””

Adrian stopped breathing for a second.

“My mother?””

Gloria nodded.

“Evelyn.””

The name seemed to hurt him.

Because it wasn’t just a name.

It was a missing piece of himself.

Adrian slowly opened the envelope.

The paper inside was old.

Folded carefully.

Protected.

Like someone had spent years making sure it survived.

His eyes moved across the first line.

Then his hands began to tremble.

“What does it say?”” I asked softly.

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

His eyes were full of something I had never seen before.

A child’s heartbreak.

“She knew.””

“About what?””

He looked back at the letter.

“She knew I would eventually find out.””

Nobody spoke.

He swallowed hard.

Then he began reading aloud.

“Dear Adrian…”

His voice cracked on his own name.

“If you are reading this, it means someone finally decided you deserved the truth.””

A painful silence followed.

Gloria looked down.

Adrian continued.

“I want you to know something before anything else. I never left you.””

His breathing became uneven.

“I never walked away from you. I never stopped loving you.””

A tear slipped down his cheek.

And that broke something inside me.

Because I realized Adrian had spent his entire life believing someone had abandoned him.

When the truth was that someone had taken her away.

He kept reading.

“I know there are people who will tell you I was weak. They will tell you I made mistakes. They will tell you I disappeared because I didn’t care.””

He paused.

His eyes lifted toward Loretta’s empty seat.

“But the truth is much harder to accept.””

His voice became quieter.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The entire room seemed to lean closer.

Protect him from what?

Adrian turned the page.

Then suddenly stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I touched his arm.

“What is it?””

He looked at Gloria.

“She mentioned Marcus.””

Gloria nodded.

Adrian looked down.

“My son, your father made a mistake that changed all of our lives. But the mistake was not what people think.””

He frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Gloria said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“Marcus discovered something about Loretta. Something she would do anything to hide.””

The air left my lungs.

Even after everything we had learned, there was still something worse.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“She wrote that Loretta was not protecting me.””

He looked up.

“She was protecting herself.””

Nobody moved.

The words echoed.

Gloria closed her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

The question was filled with pain.

Gloria accepted it.

“Because I promised Evelyn.””

“A promise?””

“Yes.””

“What promise could possibly be more important than telling me who I am?””

Gloria looked at him.

“The promise to keep you alive.””

Everyone went silent.

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Gloria looked at me.

“Nia, there are things you need to understand.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“No more secrets.””

He held up the letter.

“No more protecting me from the truth.””

Gloria nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

She looked around the room.

“So I’ll tell you everything.””

She took a breath.

“Twenty-six years ago, Marcus found evidence that Loretta had been hiding money from the family business.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

“She had been moving money without anyone knowing.””

Loretta’s empty chair seemed to accuse her.

“Marcus confronted her,” Gloria continued.

“He told her he was going to expose what she had done.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“Why?””

“Because Mom always told me my father was irresponsible. That he lost everything.””

Gloria looked at him sadly.

“She told you that because she needed you to hate him.””

The room fell quiet.

Adrian looked broken.

“But why?””

Gloria answered.

“Because Marcus had proof.””

“What proof?””

Gloria reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small flash drive.

Everyone stared.

Adrian looked at it.

“What is that?””

“The reason Loretta has been afraid for twenty-six years.””

A nervous feeling spread through me.

“What’s on it?””

Gloria hesitated.

Then she said:

“Everything.””

Adrian looked toward the entrance.

“Where is she?””

Nobody needed to ask who he meant.

Loretta.

Gloria looked worried.

“She won’t stay gone.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I know her.””

The confidence in Gloria’s voice was frightening.

“She spent her whole life controlling people. Losing control is the one thing she fears.””

I looked at Adrian.

“What are you going to do?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

For years, Adrian had been the peacemaker.

The person who avoided difficult conversations.

The person who swallowed his pain to keep everyone else comfortable.

But tonight had changed him.

His mother had humiliated his wife.

Then his entire identity had been ripped apart.

Something inside him had finally reached its limit.

“I’m going to find out the truth.””

Gloria nodded.

“Then you need to see what’s on this.””

She handed him the flash drive.

Before Adrian could respond, a sound came from the far side of the room.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

It was Loretta’s phone.

Except Loretta wasn’t there.

One of the guests pointed toward the table.

“She left it.””

Adrian walked over slowly.

The screen lit up.

One message appeared.

No name.

No number.

Just a notification.

Adrian picked up the phone.

I watched his face change as he read it.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian?””

He looked at me.

Then at Gloria.

The fear in his eyes made my stomach drop.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone around.

The message was short.

Only one sentence.

*You opened the door. Now everyone will know what you really are.*

Nobody spoke.

Then another message appeared.

A photo attachment.

Adrian clicked it.

And the moment the image loaded, Gloria covered her mouth.

Because it wasn’t a picture of Marcus.

It wasn’t a picture of Evelyn.

It wasn’t even a picture of Loretta.

It was a picture of Adrian.

Taken when he was a child.

Standing outside a hospital.

With a woman beside him.

A woman none of us recognized.

Except Gloria.

Her face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Who is she?””

Gloria couldn’t answer.

I looked at the woman in the photograph.

Then at Gloria.

“Who is that?””

Finally, Gloria whispered:

“That is the woman who took Adrian away from his real family.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Adrian looked at the picture again.

And then he noticed something.

A detail hidden in the corner.

A hospital bracelet.

A date.

The date of his birth.

His eyes widened.

“Wait…”

He looked at Gloria.

“This picture was taken after I was supposed to be with Loretta.””

Gloria nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Adrian’s voice became barely audible.

“Then where was I?””

No one answered.

Because the truth was becoming darker.

The woman in the photograph was not a stranger.

She was the beginning of the secret.

And somewhere in the city, Loretta was running from the one person who could finally expose everything.

May you like

A person Adrian had never known existed.

A person who had been waiting twenty-six years to tell her side of the story.
