Chapter 1: Mom?

“Mom?””

Aaliyah’s whisper was so quiet that only the people standing beside her could have heard it.

Yet the entire auditorium seemed to hear it anyway.

The graduation ceremony had been full of noise a second earlier—applause, camera shutters, parents calling names, chairs scraping against the floor. Bright stage lights washed everything in clean white and gold. Burgundy curtains framed the podium behind Aaliyah, and rows of Black families filled the auditorium.

Then Monique stepped through the curtain.

Aaliyah stopped breathing.

The woman standing ten feet away looked thinner than the mother she remembered, older than the photographs kept in a box beneath Aaliyah’s bed, but there was no mistaking her.

Those eyes.

That small scar above her eyebrow.

The silver pendant around her neck.

Her mother.

The woman everyone had told Aaliyah was dead.

Renee, standing beside her in an elegant burgundy dress, was the first to react.

Her hand tightened around Aaliyah’s elbow.

“Smile,” Renee whispered sharply.

“There are cameras.””

Aaliyah didn’t move.

“Renee,” Derrick said.

His voice sounded strangely distant.

Monique walked forward, one trembling step at a time. She wore a dark coat despite the warmth inside the auditorium. Her face was pale and exhausted. Both hands clutched a sealed evidence folder against her chest.

Derrick stared at her.

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then he whispered, “They told us you died.””

A ripple of confusion moved through the audience.

Someone in the second row lowered a phone.

Aaliyah looked from her father to the woman in front of them.

“Dad,” she said, barely audible, “what does he mean?””

Derrick shook his head.

“I—I don't know.””

Renee stepped between Aaliyah and Monique.

“This isn't appropriate,” Renee said.

Monique stopped.

Her eyes moved slowly toward Renee.

“No,” Monique replied.

“It isn't.””

Renee’s polished smile disappeared.

Derrick looked at her.

“Renee?””

“Don't,” Renee whispered.

“Don't what?””

“Make a scene.””

Monique raised the folder.

The seal on the flap was official. Blue. Stamped. Unbroken.

Aaliyah stared at it.

“What is that?”” she asked.

Monique looked at her.

For the first time, her expression softened.

“Something your father should have seen twenty years ago.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“Monique, where have you been?””

Renee grabbed his sleeve.

“Derrick, stop.””

He pulled his arm away.

“No.””

His eyes never left Monique.

“You're alive.””

Monique swallowed.

“I survived.””

Renee backed away.

Aaliyah noticed.

It was barely a step.

But Renee had never been the kind of woman who backed away from anything.

Monique moved closer.

“I didn't survive an accident,” she said.

Her voice shook.

Then she looked directly at Renee.

“I survived her.””

The auditorium went completely silent.

Renee’s eyes widened.

“That's a lie.””

Monique didn't blink.

“Is it?””

“You disappeared,” Renee snapped.

“You abandoned your daughter.””

“I was made to disappear.””

Derrick looked at Renee.

“What is she talking about?””

Renee shook her head.

“She’s sick.””

Monique laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“That's what you told them.””

Aaliyah felt tears burning her eyes.

She looked at Derrick.

“Dad…”

He couldn't answer.

Monique stepped closer and extended the folder.

“I brought proof.””

Renee suddenly lunged.

Derrick caught her wrist.

“Renee!””

“Give me that!””

“Let go!””

The folder slipped halfway from Monique’s hands.

Aaliyah reached toward it.

“What's in there?””

Monique opened the seal.

The top edge of an official document appeared.

Aaliyah saw only three things.

Her mother's name.

A date from twenty years earlier.

And a red government stamp.

Renee stared at the page.

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

Derrick saw it too.

“Renee,” he whispered.

“What is on that paper?””

Renee didn't answer.

Aaliyah looked at Monique.

“What did she do to you?””

Monique slowly lifted her eyes toward Renee.

And before she could speak, the auditorium doors slammed open behind them.

A man in a dark suit stepped inside.

He held another sealed envelope.

“Monique?””

She turned.

The man's expression hardened.

“We need to talk before she sees the second file.””

Aaliyah's stomach dropped.

“Second file?””

May you like

Renee stopped struggling.

Because apparently, she knew exactly what was inside it.
