Chapter 7: The Woman in the Doorway

The woman standing in the auditorium doorway didn't look frightened.

She looked tired.

Her gray-streaked braids fell over the shoulders of a simple black dress, and one hand trembled around an old photograph. She slowly walked toward the stage while hundreds of eyes followed her.

Aaliyah couldn't look away.

The woman stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

“Amara,” she whispered again.

Aaliyah's heart pounded.

“My name is Aaliyah.””

The woman swallowed.

“I know.””

Monique picked up the fallen key.

“No.””

The woman looked at her.

“You knew this day would come.””

Monique shook her head.

“Not like this.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

“My name is Evelyn Reed.””

Marcus went completely still.

“Mom?””

Aaliyah's head snapped toward him.

“Your mother?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

Evelyn climbed the stairs.

“I've been looking for my granddaughter for twenty-two years.””

Aaliyah stared at her.

“Granddaughter?””

Evelyn lifted the photograph.

It showed Monique, Marcus, and a baby.

Aaliyah.

But there was something different about this photograph.

The baby wasn't wearing the same clothes as the child in the other photograph.

Aaliyah noticed immediately.

“That isn't the same picture.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“No.””

“Why are there two babies?””

Nobody answered.

Renee whispered,

“Oh God.””

Aaliyah turned toward her.

“What?””

Renee's eyes were fixed on Evelyn.

“You weren't supposed to know.””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“I've known for years.””

Derrick looked confused.

“Know what?””

Evelyn held out the photograph.

“There were two girls.””

Aaliyah stared.

“What?””

Monique closed her eyes.

Evelyn continued.

“Two babies were born that night.””

Aaliyah felt the room tilt.

“Twins?””

Monique whispered,

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You told me there was one.””

“I had no choice.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You always had a choice.””

Aaliyah stared at Monique.

“Where is she?””

Monique's lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

Renee suddenly laughed.

It was quiet.

Almost hysterical.

“You really don't.””

Aaliyah turned.

“What does that mean?””

Renee looked at Evelyn.

“Tell her.””

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“You've done enough.””

“No,” Renee said.

“You should tell her who took the second baby.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“Who?””

Renee looked directly at Monique.

“She did.””

Aaliyah froze.

“Mom?””

Monique shook her head.

“No.””

Renee pointed toward the doorway.

“Ask Evelyn.””

Everyone looked at her.

Evelyn's face changed.

Aaliyah walked closer.

“Did you take my sister?””

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Aaliyah's voice cracked.

“Did you?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“I was told your mother had abandoned you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Who told you?””

Evelyn looked toward Renee.

Her silence was enough.

Derrick's face hardened.

“Renee.””

Renee wiped her eyes.

“I was trying to save one of them.””

“One of them?”” Aaliyah repeated.

Renee nodded.

“Your mother was being watched. Marcus was being framed. Leon was dead. Everything was falling apart.””

“And you stole a baby?””

“I protected her.””

“Where is she?””

Renee looked at Aaliyah.

“I don't know.””

Aaliyah stepped forward.

“Don't lie to me.””

“I haven't seen her since she was three.””

Monique gasped.

“You saw her?””

Renee turned toward her.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After you disappeared.””

Monique's face went white.

“You told me she died.””

“I told you what you needed to believe.””

Aaliyah stared at Renee.

“So my sister is alive?””

Renee hesitated.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You know exactly where she is.””

Renee shook her head.

“I don't.””

Evelyn suddenly spoke.

“She does.””

Renee looked at her.

Evelyn reached inside her purse and pulled out another photograph.

A young Black woman stood beside a college graduation sign.

Long braids.

Gold earrings.

A small scar above her eyebrow.

Aaliyah's breath stopped.

She grabbed the photograph.

The woman looked almost exactly like her.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same face.

But the name printed across the bottom wasn't Aaliyah.

It read:

*AMARA REED — GRADUATING CLASS OF 2026.*

Aaliyah stared at the date.

Her own graduation date.

Her own year.

“No.””

Marcus took the photograph.

His hands began shaking.

“Where did you get this?””

Evelyn whispered,

“She sent it to me last week.””

Aaliyah looked up.

“Who?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Your sister.””

Aaliyah's pulse raced.

“Where is she now?””

Evelyn pointed toward the auditorium entrance.

“She was supposed to meet me here.””

Everyone turned.

The doorway was empty.

Then Aaliyah's phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

A photograph appeared.

It showed her standing onstage.

Taken only seconds earlier.

Beneath it was a single sentence:

*Don't trust the woman who calls herself your mother.*

Aaliyah slowly looked toward Monique.

Monique's face had gone white.

Then another message arrived.

*She knows where I am.*

Aaliyah looked at Renee.

Renee was crying.

May you like

But not because she was afraid.

Because she recognized the number.
