Chapter 10: The Truth She Was Never Supposed to Know
The man standing in the doorway was older than Derrick, but Aaliyah recognized him immediately.
He was the man from the photograph.
The man whose face had been circled in red.
Derrick stared at him as if he were looking at a ghost.
“Thomas?””
The man smiled.
“Hello, Derrick.””
Calvin went completely still.
Aaliyah looked at him.
“You know him?””
Calvin's jaw tightened.
“Thomas Reed.””
Aaliyah's eyes widened.
“Reed?””
The man nodded.
“My name is Thomas Reed.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You're supposed to be dead.””
Thomas smiled faintly.
“So is your mother.””
Aaliyah's stomach dropped.
“Which mother?””
Thomas looked at her.
For the first time, his expression softened.
“You're Amara.””
Aaliyah couldn't breathe.
He knew her birth name.
Not Aaliyah.
Amara.
The name she'd only heard for the first time that day.
Thomas walked onto the stage.
Derrick moved in front of Aaliyah.
“Stay away from her.””
Thomas stopped.
“You still think you're protecting her?””
Derrick's voice shook.
“I'll do whatever I have to.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You already did.””
Aaliyah stepped around Derrick.
“No more.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She held up the evidence folder.
“I want the truth.””
Thomas nodded.
“Good.””
He looked at Renee.
“And she deserves it from you.””
Renee stared at him.
“You promised.””
“I promised you I'd keep them alive.””
“You said nobody would ever know.””
“I was wrong.””
Renee began crying.
Aaliyah turned toward her.
“Start talking.””
Renee's shoulders trembled.
“Your mother discovered Thomas's operation.””
Derrick frowned.
“What operation?””
Thomas answered.
“The foundation.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“What foundation?””
Thomas sighed.
“I ran a private adoption network.””
Simone gasped.
“You sold children.””
Thomas looked at her.
“I placed children with families who could protect them.””
“You stole them.””
“I rescued them.””
“You forged records.””
“Yes.””
“You murdered people.””
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Not everyone who died was killed by me.””
Aaliyah felt sick.
“Then tell me about my sisters.””
Thomas looked at her.
“There were three babies.””
He pointed toward the photograph.
“Monique gave birth to you, Nia, and your third sister.””
Aaliyah whispered,
“What was her name?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Layla.””
Renee closed her eyes.
Aaliyah looked at her.
“Where is Layla?””
Renee began sobbing.
“She was taken.””
“By who?””
“Thomas.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Renee looked up.
“You took her.””
“I took her from the people who wanted her dead.””
“Then where is she?””
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
Aaliyah took it.
A young Black woman stood outside a courthouse.
Long braids.
Gold earrings.
The same eyes.
The same scar.
Aaliyah stared at the photograph.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“She's alive.””
Aaliyah looked at the date.
It was from three months earlier.
“Where?””
Thomas pointed toward the auditorium doors.
Aaliyah turned.
A young woman stood there.
She looked exactly like the photograph.
Exactly like Aaliyah.
The woman smiled through tears.
“Hi.””
Aaliyah couldn't move.
The woman stepped closer.
“My name is Layla.””
Aaliyah covered her mouth.
Then another figure appeared behind her.
Nia.
The woman from the photograph.
Aaliyah stared at both of them.
Three faces.
One family.
Nia walked toward the stage.
“I wanted to meet you before they could lie again.””
Aaliyah began crying.
“You knew about me?””
“For years.””
“Why didn't you find me?””
Nia looked at Renee.
“Because she told us you were safe.””
Renee whispered,
“You were.””
Nia shook her head.
“You were scared.””
Aaliyah looked at Layla.
“And you?””
Layla smiled sadly.
“I was told I had no sisters.””
Aaliyah laughed through her tears.
“So we all got different lies.””
Simone walked toward them.
“I am sorry.””
Aaliyah looked at her.
“You're my grandmother?””
Simone nodded.
“Your grandmother on your mother's side.””
Aaliyah looked toward Evelyn.
“And you?””
Evelyn smiled through tears.
“Your grandmother on Marcus's side.””
Aaliyah's eyes widened.
“So Marcus is really my father?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Yes.””
Derrick lowered his head.
Aaliyah looked at him.
“And you?””
Derrick's eyes filled with tears.
“I am the man who raised you.””
Aaliyah walked toward him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she hugged him.
Derrick broke down against her shoulder.
“I should have told you.””
“I know.””
“I was afraid you'd hate me.””
“I don't.””
He pulled back.
“You don't?””
Aaliyah wiped her face.
“You're still my dad.””
Derrick nodded, crying.
“Thank you.””
Across the stage, Renee watched them.
Aaliyah turned toward her.
“You aren't my mother.””
Renee nodded.
“No.””
“But you raised me.””
“Yes.””
“And you lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You stole letters from my mother.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“You forged custody papers.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
Aaliyah's voice became quiet.
“Why?””
Renee looked at her.
“Because I loved you.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“That isn't love.””
Renee began crying.
“No.””
Aaliyah continued.
“Love doesn't need a cage.””
Renee looked down.
Calvin stepped forward.
“Renee Carter, Thomas Reed, you're both under arrest.””
Thomas didn't resist.
Renee looked at Aaliyah one last time.
“I am sorry.””
Aaliyah nodded.
“I believe you.””
Renee looked surprised.
“But I don't forgive you yet.””
Calvin placed handcuffs on Renee.
Then Thomas.
The auditorium slowly began to breathe again.
Graduates started sitting down.
Parents lowered their phones.
The graduation announcer approached the podium with tears in his eyes.
“I think,” he said softly, “we should finish this ceremony.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
Then at her sisters.
Nia smiled.
Layla reached for her hand.
Marcus stood beside them.
Derrick stood on her other side.
For the first time, Aaliyah didn't feel like she had to choose between families.
She had finally found the pieces of her own.
The announcer lifted the microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our graduate, Aaliyah Carter.””
Aaliyah stepped toward the podium.
The applause began quietly.
Then grew.
She looked across the auditorium.
At the burgundy curtains.
The bright lights.
The rows of strangers who had witnessed the worst day of her life become the beginning of something else.
She unfolded her graduation speech.
Her hands were still shaking.
“I had planned to talk about my future.””
The audience laughed softly.
Aaliyah smiled through her tears.
“But today, I learned that you can't build a future until you know the truth about your past.””
She looked toward her sisters.
Then Marcus.
Then Derrick.
“I spent twenty-two years thinking I was alone.””
Nia squeezed Layla's hand.
Aaliyah continued.
“I wasn't.””
The applause grew louder.
And then she saw something on the podium.
A small envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
Her name written across it in handwriting she recognized.
Her mother's.
Aaliyah opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only three sentences.
*My baby, if you're reading this, I survived long enough to make sure you would know the truth.*
*You were never abandoned.*
*And no matter what anyone tells you, you were loved every single day.*
Aaliyah pressed the letter against her chest.
Then she looked toward Monique's photograph.
The woman who had died protecting her.
The woman whose sister had carried her mother's name.
The father who had searched for her.
The sisters she had never known existed.
And finally, the man she had called Dad.
Aaliyah smiled through her tears.
“I'm ready.””
The announcer looked confused.
“Ready for what?””
Aaliyah looked toward the graduation stage.
Her smile grew.
“My real life.””
May you like
The applause thundered.
And for the first time in twenty-two years, nobody was hiding anything from her.
