Chapter 6: The Other Mother

Nobody spoke.

Aaliyah could feel the entire auditorium watching her.

The graduation decorations above the stage suddenly seemed absurd.

Gold balloons.

Burgundy banners.

A giant sign celebrating a future.

And beneath it, a family that had apparently been built on lies.

Aaliyah turned toward Monique.

“What identity?””

Monique looked at Calvin.

Then Marcus.

Neither man spoke.

Derrick stepped forward.

“You owe her an answer.””

Monique closed her eyes.

“I used another name.””

Aaliyah's voice was cold.

“What name?””

“Monica Hayes.””

Derrick stared.

“Why?””

“Because I was hiding.””

“From Renee?””

“Yes.””

Renee laughed.

“Not only from me.””

Aaliyah turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

Renee's smile disappeared.

“Your mother didn't tell you everything.””

Monique whispered,

“Renee, stop.””

“No.””

Renee stepped onto the stage again.

“You've spent twenty-two years believing I was the monster.””

“You are,” Marcus said.

Renee looked at him.

“Maybe.””

Then she turned to Aaliyah.

“But your mother wasn't innocent.””

Monique's eyes flashed.

“Don't do this.””

“Why not?””

“Because you know why.””

Derrick stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Renee looked at him.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then ask Monique where she was the night Leon died.””

Aaliyah looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Monique's face crumpled.

“I was there.””

Aaliyah's stomach dropped.

“With Uncle Leon?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Monique stared at the floor.

“He was trying to help me escape.””

Marcus's expression tightened.

“I didn't know he came back.””

“He did.””

“Why?””

“Because he found the documents.””

“What documents?”” Derrick asked.

Monique reached for the evidence folder.

Her fingers stopped.

Then she slowly pulled out a second photograph.

This one showed a young Leon standing beside Renee.

Aaliyah looked closer.

On the back was another handwritten note.

*The adoption was never legal.*

Aaliyah stared.

“What adoption?””

Derrick went pale.

Renee whispered,

“Don't.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“What adoption?””

Monique finally answered.

“Yours.””

Aaliyah's breath caught.

“I wasn't adopted.””

Derrick closed his eyes.

Monique shook her head.

“Not legally.””

Aaliyah looked between them.

“Then what was I?””

Nobody answered.

She raised her voice.

“What was I?””

Monique began crying.

“You were born under a different name.””

Aaliyah stared at her.

“What name?””

Monique swallowed.

“Amara.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“No.””

“Your birth name was Amara Reed.””

Aaliyah looked at Marcus.

His eyes were already wet.

“Reed?””

He nodded.

“My surname.””

Aaliyah stepped backward.

“So you knew.””

Marcus whispered,

“Yes.””

“You knew my name.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me grow up thinking I was Aaliyah Carter?””

Marcus's face tightened.

“I thought it was safer.””

Aaliyah laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She turned toward Derrick.

“Did you know?””

Derrick looked destroyed.

“I knew the adoption paperwork was complicated.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I knew Renee had arranged for you to be placed with us.””

Aaliyah's eyes widened.

“Placed?””

Monique stepped forward.

“I never gave you away.””

Renee shouted,

“You had no choice!””

Monique turned.

“You stole my daughter.””

“I saved her!””

“You stole her.””

“I kept her alive!””

Aaliyah stared at Renee.

“Why?””

Renee's face twisted.

“Because someone was coming for you.””

“Who?””

Renee didn't answer.

Derrick did.

“The people your mother was investigating.””

Monique looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I knew enough.””

Aaliyah's voice cracked.

“You knew my life was a lie.””

Derrick's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You all thought you were protecting me.””

She pointed at them.

“And nobody thought I deserved the truth.””

Calvin stepped forward.

“There is something you need to see.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Another file?””

He nodded.

“What now?””

“The original custody order.””

He opened his briefcase and removed a thin folder.

“The court never authorized Renee to take custody.””

Renee shook her head.

“That's impossible.””

Calvin placed the document on the podium.

“The judge's signature was forged.””

Derrick stared.

“Who forged it?””

Calvin looked at Renee.

Renee's lips parted.

“No.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“Did you?””

Renee backed away.

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

“Did you forge it?””

“Yes.””

The admission was barely audible.

Aaliyah's eyes closed.

For a moment, she couldn't move.

Then she opened them.

“Why?””

Renee looked directly at her.

“Because your biological father was accused of murder.””

Marcus stiffened.

“You knew the charge was false.””

“I knew you were dangerous.””

“You knew I was innocent.””

“I knew you were going to take her.””

“She was my daughter!””

“And I loved her!””

The words exploded from Renee.

Silence followed.

Renee's chest rose and fell rapidly.

“I raised her.””

Monique whispered,

“You replaced me.””

Renee looked at her.

“Because you couldn't protect her.””

Monique stepped closer.

“I protected her by disappearing.””

Renee shook her head.

“You abandoned her.””

“I was forced to.””

“Then why did you stay hidden for twenty years?””

Monique froze.

Aaliyah looked at her.

“Why?””

Monique couldn't answer.

Marcus looked at her.

“Tell her.””

Monique shook her head.

“Aaliyah isn't ready.””

Aaliyah slammed her palm onto the podium.

“Stop deciding what I'm ready for!””

Her voice echoed across the auditorium.

“I've spent my entire life being protected from the truth.””

She looked at Monique.

“I'm done.””

Monique finally reached inside her coat.

She removed a small key.

Aaliyah stared at it.

“What is that?””

“The key to the final evidence box.””

Calvin's expression changed.

“You still have it?””

Monique nodded.

“Twenty-two years.””

Derrick whispered,

“What is inside?””

Monique looked at Aaliyah.

“Proof of who ordered your mother's disappearance.””

Aaliyah frowned.

“Your mother's?””

Monique's face went pale.

She realized what she had said.

Aaliyah stared at her.

“What did you just call yourself?””

Monique didn't respond.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Monique…”

Aaliyah's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Whose mother are you?””

Monique looked at her daughter.

Then at Marcus.

Then at Renee.

Finally, she said,

“I need you to know something before you open that box.””

Aaliyah waited.

Monique's eyes filled with tears.

“I am not the only person who has been pretending to be your mother.””

The auditorium doors opened again.

Aaliyah turned.

An older Black woman stood there, holding a photograph.

She looked directly at Aaliyah.

Then she whispered,

“Amara?””

Monique dropped the key.

May you like

Because she knew that voice.

And she knew exactly why that woman had come.
