Chapter 2: The Second File
The man walked onto the stage without asking permission.
The graduation announcer stood frozen behind the podium, microphone still in his hand.
Nobody applauded.
Nobody moved.
Aaliyah stared at the stranger.
He looked to be in his fifties, Black, clean-shaven, wearing a charcoal suit with a small government identification badge clipped inside his jacket.
Derrick pointed at him.
“Who are you?””
The man stopped beside Monique.
“My name is Calvin Brooks.””
Renee went pale.
Derrick noticed.
“You know him?””
Renee shook her head too quickly.
“No.””
Calvin looked at her.
“You're Renee Carter?””
Renee's lips parted.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Calvin reached inside his jacket.
Derrick stepped forward.
“Don't pull anything out.””
Calvin calmly produced an identification card.
“I was the investigator assigned to Monique's case.””
Aaliyah's eyes widened.
“My mother's death?””
Calvin looked at her.
“Her disappearance.””
Renee whispered, “This is ridiculous.””
Calvin ignored her.
“Twenty years ago, Monique was reported dead after a vehicle went over a bridge outside the city.””
Derrick nodded slowly.
“That was what we were told.””
“Correct.””
“So there was never a body?”” Derrick asked.
Calvin looked at him.
“No.””
Derrick's face tightened.
“You told me she died.””
“I told you the case was being treated as a presumed death.””
Derrick turned toward Renee.
“You said there was a body.””
Renee's voice cracked.
“I was told there was.””
“By who?””
“I don't remember.””
Aaliyah stared at her stepmother.
Renee always remembered everything.
Birthdays.
Appointments.
Receipts.
Passwords.
The smallest insult from ten years ago.
But now she couldn't remember who had supposedly identified her mother's body.
Monique slowly placed the folder on the podium.
“Because there was no body.””
Derrick looked at her.
“Then why didn't you come home?””
Monique lowered her eyes.
“Because I tried.””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“When?””
Monique looked at her daughter.
“Three days after you turned two.””
Aaliyah froze.
“You remember my birthday?””
“I remember every birthday.””
Renee suddenly snapped.
“She didn't raise you.””
Aaliyah turned.
“Neither did you.””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Renee looked wounded.
For a second, she almost looked like the victim.
Then Monique spoke.
“She was supposed to keep you safe.””
Renee's expression hardened.
“I did keep her safe.””
“From me?””
“From everything.””
Calvin opened the second envelope.
“That's enough.””
He removed a photograph.
He didn't hand it to anyone.
Instead, he looked at Derrick.
“Your wife wasn't the only person involved.””
Derrick's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Calvin turned the photograph around.
Aaliyah saw it first.
It showed a much younger Monique standing beside a car.
A baby was in her arms.
Aaliyah.
But standing beside Monique was another person.
Derrick stepped closer.
His face drained of color.
“That's impossible.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“What?””
He didn't answer.
She looked again.
The person in the photograph was partially obscured by the glare.
But Aaliyah recognized the suit.
The watch.
The posture.
“Dad?””
Derrick took the photograph from Calvin.
His fingers began to shake.
“No.””
Monique watched him.
“You remember.””
“I don't.””
“You do.””
Renee suddenly reached for the photograph.
Derrick pulled it away.
“Don't touch it.””
“Derrick, please.””
“Why are you afraid of this?””
Renee's eyes filled with tears.
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
Calvin stepped between them.
“There is more.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“Then tell me.””
Calvin hesitated.
Monique shook her head.
“Not here.””
Aaliyah's voice rose.
“Not here? My entire life just changed in front of hundreds of people!””
Several guests were openly crying now.
Aaliyah turned toward the audience.
“I was told my mother died.””
Then she faced Renee.
“You told me she was dead.””
Renee whispered, “I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Renee couldn't answer.
Aaliyah turned to Derrick.
“And you?””
Derrick looked at the photograph.
“I believed what I was told.””
Monique stepped toward him.
“That was your first mistake.””
Derrick looked up.
“What was my second?””
Monique's face crumpled for just a moment.
“Trusting her.””
Renee suddenly shouted, “Stop!””
Everyone flinched.
She grabbed the podium.
“You don't know what happened.””
Monique stared at her.
“I know exactly what happened.””
“Then tell them!””
Monique opened her mouth.
Calvin grabbed her arm.
“Not yet.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
He nodded toward Aaliyah.
“She's not ready.””
Aaliyah stepped closer.
“Ready for what?””
Calvin said nothing.
She looked at Monique.
“Tell me.””
Monique's eyes filled with tears.
“I came here because you're twenty-two now.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Monique touched the sealed folder.
“Because today is the day the last restriction expires.””
Derrick stared at her.
“What restriction?””
Monique looked at him.
“The one that kept the final evidence sealed.””
Renee whispered, “No.””
Calvin reached into his jacket again.
This time he produced a key.
Small.
Metal.
Old.
He placed it on the podium.
“The evidence vault opened this morning.””
Aaliyah stared at the key.
“What evidence?””
Calvin looked directly at her.
“Evidence about what happened to your mother.””
Then he looked at Derrick.
“And evidence about what happened to you.””
Derrick's face went rigid.
“What do you mean, what happened to me?””
Calvin didn't answer.
Because behind him, the auditorium's giant screen suddenly flickered on.
A document appeared.
At the top was Aaliyah's full name.
Underneath it was a line labeled:
*Biological Mother: Monique Carter.*
Then another line appeared.
*Biological Father: Unknown.*
Aaliyah stared at the screen.
Her breathing stopped.
She turned slowly toward Derrick.
“Dad…”
Renee closed her eyes.
May you like
And Calvin quietly said,
“That's why she never wanted you to see the file.””
