Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Silence

The sound of Amelia’s fingers moving was louder than the thunder outside.

At least, that was how it felt.

Everyone in the chapel heard it.

The priest stopped breathing for a moment.

The funeral director stepped backward.

Someone in the crowd whispered, “Oh my God.””

But Ryan didn’t move.

That scared me more than anything.

A normal person would have panicked.

A normal person would have rushed to the coffin.

A normal person would have shouted for help.

Ryan simply stood there, staring at my daughter like he was watching a plan collapse in front of him.

I pushed him away.

“Call an ambulance!””

Nobody moved.

They were frozen.

So I screamed.

“CALL AN AMBULANCE!””

The funeral director finally grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling now.””

Dr. Ethan Miller rushed forward, his face pale.

“Everyone needs to step back.””

I looked at him with disbelief.

“Step back?””

“Mrs. Carter, please.””

“My daughter has been lying in there while you told everyone she was dead!””

His lips parted, but no words came out.

That was when I knew.

He wasn’t innocent.

Maybe he wasn’t the person who planned it.

Maybe he wasn’t the monster standing beside my daughter’s coffin.

But he was part of it.

I leaned over Amelia again.

“Sweetheart, stay with me.””

Her face was still.

Too still.

I grabbed her hand.

“Mom is here.””

The same hand that had held mine when she was five years old.

The same hand that had waved goodbye on her wedding day.

The same hand that had written me birthday cards every year.

I squeezed it gently.

And then her fingers curled around mine.

A weak movement.

But enough.

Enough to break me.

“She heard me.””

My voice cracked.

“She knows I’m here.””

Dr. Miller looked away.

Ryan finally moved.

“Margaret, listen to me.””

I turned.

“What?””

His face was different now.

The fake sadness was gone.

The performance had ended.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

I stared at him.

“My daughter is alive because she fought against whatever you did.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

He looked around.

Everyone was watching him.

The entire room had become a courtroom.

And he was the one standing on trial.

“I didn’t want this.””

The words made my stomach turn.

“You didn’t want what?””

Ryan rubbed his face.

“I didn’t want Amelia to die.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“You’re right. You wanted something worse.””

His eyes flashed with anger.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me why my daughter was declared dead while she was still breathing.””

Ryan looked toward Dr. Miller.

That was enough.

I didn’t need a confession.

I needed the truth.

And I was going to find it.

The ambulance arrived ten minutes later, but those ten minutes felt like hours.

Paramedics rushed inside and immediately began working on Amelia.

“Female, early thirties,” one paramedic said.

“Possible drug-induced unconsciousness.””

Drug-induced.

The words hit everyone.

The crowd started whispering.

Ryan backed away.

The paramedic looked at him.

“Are you the husband?””

Ryan hesitated.

Just a fraction of a second.

“Yes.””

“Step outside. We need space.””

Ryan obeyed.

But before leaving, he looked at me.

Not with sadness.

Not with regret.

With fear.

That fear followed him out the door.

I followed the ambulance to the hospital.

I didn’t leave Amelia’s side.

Not once.

The doctors moved quickly.

They ran tests.

They checked her brain activity.

They examined her blood.

Every second felt like a lifetime.

Finally, after what felt like forever, a doctor walked toward me.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I stood immediately.

“Yes?””

“I’m Dr. Lewis. Your daughter is stable.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Stable.

The most beautiful word I had ever heard.

“Can I see her?””

“In a few minutes.””

I covered my mouth.

“She’s going to wake up?””

The doctor’s expression became serious.

“We don’t know yet.””

The happiness in my chest faded slightly.

“What do you mean?””

“She was given a powerful sedative. The amount was significant.””

“Was it an accident?””

The doctor looked at me carefully.

“I can’t determine intent.””

But he didn’t say yes.

That told me everything.

“When will she wake up?””

“It could be hours. It could be longer.””

I sat in the waiting room.

Alone.

Until I heard footsteps.

Ryan.

Of course.

He walked in like he belonged there.

Like he was still her husband.

Like he still had a place beside her.

I stood.

“You need to leave.””

His face hardened.

“I’m her husband.””

“You’re the reason she almost died.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why was she unconscious?””

He lowered his voice.

“Keep your voice down.””

I laughed.

“Are you worried people will hear?””

“Margaret, you’re emotional.””

There it was again.

That word.

Emotional.

As if he could erase the truth by making me sound unstable.

I walked closer.

“What did you give her?””

“I didn’t give her anything.””

“Then why did Dr. Miller say you told him she wouldn’t wake up?””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“He misunderstood.””

“No.””

“He made a mistake.””

“No.””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“He was afraid of you.””

Ryan looked away.

For the first time since I met him, he had nothing to say.

Then he reached into his jacket.

And my blood ran cold.

Because I recognized the envelope.

The same type of envelope he had slipped to Dr. Miller at the funeral.

He noticed me looking.

Slowly, he put it back.

“You don’t want to do this.””

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

I stared at him.

“Everything?””

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea what’s at stake.””

“My daughter’s life is at stake.””

His expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

He wasn’t worried about Amelia.

He was worried about losing something.

“What are you hiding, Ryan?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he said quietly:

“You should ask Amelia what happened the night before the accident.””

A chill went through me.

“What does that mean?””

He walked toward the exit.

“Ask her who she was planning to meet.””

“Ryan!””

He stopped.

Without turning around, he said:

“Because when she wakes up, she’ll tell you the truth.””

Then he left.

I stood there, confused.

Angry.

Terrified.

Why would Ryan want me to ask Amelia?

Unless…

Unless there was something even bigger than I knew.

Hours passed.

The hospital lights felt too bright.

The silence felt too heavy.

I sat beside Amelia’s bed, watching the machines keep her alive.

Her face looked so peaceful.

Nothing like the nightmare I had just witnessed.

I held her hand.

“Please wake up.””

My voice broke.

“I need to know what happened.””

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then her eyelids moved.

I stood so quickly the chair fell behind me.

“Amelia?””

Her eyes opened slowly.

Confused.

Scared.

She looked around the room.

Then she saw me.

“Mom?””

I started crying.

“Oh my God.””

I held her hand.

“You’re here.””

Her lips trembled.

“Where am I?””

“You’re safe.””

She looked frightened.

Then suddenly her expression changed.

Like she remembered something.

Her breathing became faster.

“Mom…”

“What?””

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Ryan.””

My heart sank.

“What about Ryan?””

She looked toward the hospital door.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“He knows I saw the documents.””

“What documents?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“The ones proving he killed someone.””

The room went silent.

I felt every hair on my arms rise.

“Who did he kill?””

Amelia looked at me.

And before she could answer, the hospital room door slowly opened.

Ryan stood there.

Watching us.

And in his hand…

Was a folder with Amelia’s name written across the front.
