Chapter 3: The Folder With Her Name

Ryan stood in the doorway like he had been there for a while.

Long enough to hear.

Long enough to know Amelia had woken up.

Long enough to understand the secret he tried to bury had started breathing again.

The folder in his hand looked ordinary.

That was the terrifying part.

A simple brown folder.

No warning.

No sign.

Nothing that told the world it contained the reason my daughter was almost placed underground while still alive.

I stepped between Amelia and the door.

“What are you doing here?””

Ryan’s eyes moved past me.

Straight to Amelia.

She immediately gripped my hand tighter.

“Mom…”

Her voice was weak.

But the fear in it was stronger than anything.

I looked at Ryan.

“Leave.””

He didn’t move.

“I need to talk to my wife.””

Amelia flinched.

Wife.

The word sounded wrong.

Like it belonged to someone else.

“You don’t get to call me that,” she whispered.

Ryan’s expression changed.

A small crack appeared in the calm mask he had worn for days.

“Amelia, you don’t understand what’s happening.””

She stared at him.

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I woke up inside a coffin.””

Silence.

The machines beside her bed continued beeping.

A steady reminder that she was alive.

That his plan had failed.

Ryan lowered his voice.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Then why were you standing at her funeral?””

His eyes shifted toward me.

“This is between my wife and me.””

“No,” Amelia said.

Her voice surprised all of us.

She pushed herself slightly higher against the pillows.

“This stopped being between us when you tried to bury me.””

Ryan looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw something different.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You need to rest.””

Amelia laughed weakly.

A broken, painful sound.

“Is that what you told the doctor?””

Ryan froze.

I noticed.

So did Amelia.

“You told him I wouldn’t wake up,” she said.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re confused because of the medication.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I remember everything.””

The room seemed to become smaller.

I moved closer to the bed.

“What do you remember, sweetheart?””

Amelia closed her eyes.

For a few seconds, she looked like she was fighting against a nightmare.

Then she opened them.

“The night before the accident.””

Ryan looked away.

I noticed.

Again.

A tiny movement.

But enough.

“Tell me,” I said.

Amelia swallowed.

“I found the files.””

“What files?””

She looked at Ryan.

“The financial records.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

“The company records,” Amelia continued.

“He thought I wouldn’t notice.””

“Notice what?””

Amelia’s breathing became uneven.

“That money was disappearing.””

I looked at Ryan.

He shook his head.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Amelia turned toward him.

“You transferred thousands of dollars from the business account.””

“That’s not true.””

“You used fake invoices.””

“You’re sick right now.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“I saw them.””

Ryan stepped forward.

The movement was fast.

Too fast.

I immediately raised my hand.

“Don’t come closer.””

He stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ryan placed the folder on the table beside the door.

“You want the truth?””

Amelia stared at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“Fine.””

My stomach tightened.

Because people who have nothing to hide don’t sound like that.

They don’t prepare themselves before speaking.

Ryan took a breath.

“You found documents.””

“Yes.””

“You confronted me.””

“Yes.””

“You threatened to expose me.””

Amelia said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

Ryan continued.

“I panicked.””

I felt my anger rising.

“You panicked, so you drugged your wife?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at Amelia.

“I only wanted time.””

“Time for what?””

“To fix it.””

Amelia stared at him.

“You put me to sleep.””

“I didn’t know the doctor would—”

He stopped.

Too late.

The sentence hung in the air.

I stepped closer.

“You didn’t know the doctor would what?””

Ryan looked at me.

Nothing.

No answer.

That was when I understood something.

He had rehearsed his lies.

But not enough.

A nurse suddenly entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“The police are here.””

Ryan’s face changed instantly.

The nurse continued.

“They want to speak with everyone involved.””

For the first time, Ryan looked truly afraid.

Not nervous.

Not uncomfortable.

Afraid.

He walked toward the door.

I blocked him.

“Where are you going?””

“I need a lawyer.””

The words came out naturally.

Like he had already considered it.

Amelia stared at him.

“A lawyer?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

He walked around me and left the room.

Two police officers entered moments later.

One was a tall woman with dark hair pulled into a tight ponytail.

“I’m Detective Sarah Collins.””

She looked at Amelia.

“Are you able to answer questions?””

Amelia nodded.

The detective glanced at the folder near the door.

“Is that yours?””

Nobody answered.

She picked it up carefully.

“Ryan left this behind?””

“Yes,” I said.

Detective Collins looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“When we investigated the accident, we found inconsistencies.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of inconsistencies?””

She opened the folder.

“First, there was no evidence of a serious crash.””

Amelia’s face changed.

“What?””

The detective continued.

“The vehicle was damaged, but the injuries reported didn’t match the scene.””

I looked at Amelia.

She looked just as shocked.

“He staged it,” she whispered.

Detective Collins didn’t confirm.

She simply said:

“We are investigating.””

Inside the folder were photographs.

Bank records.

Medical paperwork.

And something else.

A copy of Amelia’s death certificate.

My hands shook as I looked at it.

“Why would he have this?””

The detective’s expression became serious.

“Because someone prepared this before she was officially declared dead.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“He planned everything.””

Detective Collins looked at Amelia.

“Do you know why?””

Amelia stared at the ceiling.

Her face became pale.

“There’s something I haven’t told my mother.””

I sat beside her.

“What?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“The night before the accident…”

She stopped.

“Amelia?””

She looked toward the folder.

“I wasn’t just going to expose Ryan’s theft.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what?””

She whispered:

“I found out Ryan wasn’t the only person involved.””

Nobody moved.

The detective leaned forward.

“Who else?””

Amelia looked terrified.

“I don’t know their real name.””

“What do you mean?””

“They contacted Ryan through a private number.””

“About what?””

Amelia’s fingers trembled.

“About my inheritance.””

I frowned.

“My inheritance?””

She nodded slowly.

“Grandpa’s money.””

I felt confused.

My father had left Amelia a trust after he died.

A trust Ryan always hated.

“He wanted access to it,” Amelia said.

Detective Collins looked through the papers.

“Was the trust protected?””

“Yes.””

“Could Ryan access it?””

“No.””

The detective exchanged a look with her partner.

“And after your death?””

Amelia closed her eyes.

“He would inherit everything.””

The room became silent.

The truth was becoming clearer.

Ryan didn’t just want Amelia gone.

He wanted what came after.

I looked at the doorway where he had disappeared.

The man who smiled at family dinners.

The man who held my daughter’s hand at the altar.

The man everyone trusted.

He had looked at Amelia and seen a bank account.

Not a person.

Then Amelia suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Mom.””

“What?””

Her face turned pale.

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That I kept a copy.””

“A copy of what?””

She looked toward the window.

Her voice dropped.

“The original evidence.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“I hid it before he found out.””

Detective Collins stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, where is it?””

Amelia looked at me.

Fear filled her eyes.

“Somewhere Ryan would never look.””

“Where?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, her phone on the bedside table suddenly lit up.

A new message appeared.

Everyone saw the name.

Ryan.

May you like

The message contained only four words.

*I know where it is.*
