Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The door opened slowly.

Not dramatically.

Not violently.

That was what made it terrifying.

The person standing there wasn’t rushing.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t afraid.

He walked into the hospital room like he belonged there.

Like he had done it a hundred times before.

An older man in a dark coat.

Silver hair.

Cold eyes.

A face I had never seen before.

But somehow, the moment I saw him, I knew.

This was the person behind everything.

Emily stepped backward.

Her face lost all color.

“Victor…”

The man looked at her.

“Hello, Emily.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Amelia grabbed my hand.

“Mom.””

“I know.””

I didn’t know how I knew.

But I did.

This man was dangerous.

Detective Collins stepped between him and the bed.

“Stop right there.””

Victor looked at her.

Then smiled slightly.

Not warmly.

Almost politely.

“Detective.””

The detective’s expression changed.

“You know who I am?””

Victor glanced at her badge.

“Sarah Collins.””

The room became colder.

“How do you know my name?””

Victor ignored the question.

Instead, he looked toward Amelia.

“I’m glad you’re awake.””

Amelia stared at him.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“People believe many things.””

My heart raced.

“You were the missing business partner.””

He looked at me.

“Margaret Carter.””

The way he said my name made my stomach tighten.

“You know me?””

“I know everything about your family.””

Detective Collins moved closer.

“Mr. Victor Hale, you need to explain why you entered this room.””

Victor looked at her.

“Do I?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you were declared dead ten years ago.””

A quiet laugh escaped him.

“Declared.””

He looked around the room.

“People put too much faith in paperwork.””

The detective’s hand moved closer to her weapon.

“Are you saying the death records are false?””

Victor didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Amelia stared at him.

“You worked with Ryan.””

Victor looked at her.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“I didn’t work with Ryan.””

Everyone waited.

Then Victor continued:

“Ryan worked for me.””

A chill moved through me.

Emily closed her eyes.

She knew.

She had always known.

Detective Collins looked at Victor carefully.

“Where is Ryan?””

Victor smiled faintly.

“That’s your concern?””

“Yes.””

“He’s running.””

“From what?””

Victor looked at Amelia.

“From the consequences of disappointing me.””

Amelia’s breathing changed.

“You used him.””

Victor walked closer.

Detective Collins immediately blocked him.

“Stay where you are.””

Victor stopped.

But his eyes stayed on Amelia.

“Used?””

He seemed amused.

“No.””

He looked at my daughter.

“I gave him a chance.””

“A chance to what?””

“To become powerful.””

Amelia stared at him.

“He almost killed me.””

Victor’s expression remained calm.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“He almost failed.””

The words were worse than any confession.

My anger exploded.

“You’re talking about my daughter like she’s a mistake.””

Victor looked at me.

“You misunderstand.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“I understand perfectly.””

“You think you do.””

“I know exactly what kind of person you are.””

Victor smiled.

“You know nothing about me.””

“I know enough.””

I pointed at Amelia.

“She trusted your family.””

I pointed toward the door.

“And your son tried to bury her alive.””

Victor looked at Amelia.

“Ryan was emotional.””

Emotional.

The same excuse.

The same attempt to make horror sound like weakness.

Amelia’s eyes filled with anger.

“You told him to do it.””

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

Just slightly.

But Amelia noticed.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You wanted my inheritance.””

“No.””

“You wanted access to my grandfather’s accounts.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Victor looked at her.

And for the first time, he showed something real.

Frustration.

“Because your grandfather hid something from me.””

The room went quiet.

“What?””

Victor’s voice became lower.

“Your grandfather stole from the wrong person.””

I frowned.

“My father was your business partner.””

“He was more than that.””

Victor looked at me.

“He was my enemy.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

He looked at Amelia.

“Ask your daughter.””

Everyone turned.

Amelia looked confused.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“She knows.””

My daughter went still.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“What are you talking about?””

Victor looked at her.

“The room.””

Silence.

The secret room.

The one in my grandfather’s old house.

Victor knew.

“How?””

Amelia whispered.

“How do you know about that?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Emily.

“You told him.””

Emily shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t lie to me.””

Emily stepped back.

“I never told Ryan.””

“Not Ryan.””

Victor looked at Amelia.

“Someone else.””

My daughter looked confused.

“Someone else?””

Victor watched her.

“Who helped you open that room?””

Amelia didn’t speak.

And suddenly I remembered.

The words she said earlier.

Someone Ryan trusts helped her.

Someone close.

Someone unexpected.

I looked at Emily.

She looked away.

My heart sank.

“Emily?””

She didn’t answer.

“Emily.””

Finally, she whispered:

“It wasn’t me.””

“Then who?””

Emily looked at Amelia.

“I thought you knew.””

Amelia’s face changed.

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You still don’t understand.””

Detective Collins looked at him.

“Explain.””

Victor ignored her.

He looked directly at Amelia.

“The person who helped you was the same person who gave Ryan your location.””

My daughter went pale.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Victor stepped closer.

“Think carefully.””

Amelia closed her eyes.

And then I saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

Pain.

She remembered.

“Someone came to the house,” she whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

“When?””

“The night before the accident.””

“Who?””

Amelia’s breathing became shaky.

“I thought they were helping me.””

Victor waited.

“Who was it?””

My daughter looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“It was…”

The lights suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone screamed in the hallway.

The emergency lights failed.

Again.

Detective Collins shouted:

“Everyone stay where you are!””

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Then footsteps.

Running.

When the lights returned, Victor was gone.

The door was still closed.

The police officer outside was unconscious on the floor.

And the folder containing the evidence…

Was missing.

Amelia looked at the empty table.

Her face turned white.

“No.””

I grabbed her hand.

“What?””

She stared at the place where the evidence had been.

“He didn’t come here to threaten us.””

Detective Collins looked around.

“Then why?””

Amelia whispered:

“He came here to take back the only thing that can destroy him.””

“What was it?””

She looked toward the door.

“The proof of who really ordered everything.””

My heart pounded.

“Amelia…”

She turned to me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The person who helped me…”

She swallowed.

“The person who opened the secret room with me…”

The entire room waited.

Then she said the name.

May you like

And I felt the world disappear.

“It was Grandpa.””
