Chapter 4: The Place He Never Expected

For five seconds, nobody moved.

The message stayed glowing on Amelia’s phone screen.

Four words.

Four terrifying words.

*I know where it is.*

I watched my daughter’s face lose all color.

The monitor beside her bed immediately reacted.

The steady rhythm became faster.

“Amelia,” I said softly.

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on the phone.

Like she wasn’t looking at a message.

Like she was looking at a threat.

Detective Collins picked up the phone carefully.

“Did Ryan send this?””

Amelia nodded.

“He shouldn’t know.””

The detective looked at the screen.

“When did you hide the evidence?””

Amelia swallowed.

“Two days before the accident.””

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“I can’t say.””

The detective frowned.

“Mrs. Carter, your husband attempted to have you declared dead. Whatever you’re protecting may be the reason why.””

Amelia closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Then why keep it secret?””

Because she was afraid.

I could see it.

My daughter had survived something horrible, and now she was still protecting information because she believed Ryan could reach her anywhere.

Even here.

Even in a hospital room.

I held her hand.

“Amelia.””

She looked at me.

“You almost lost your life.””

Tears formed in her eyes.

“I know.””

“Then tell us.””

She looked toward the door.

“Not here.””

Detective Collins studied her.

“Why?””

“Because Ryan has people everywhere.””

The detective became still.

“What people?””

Amelia hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“The hospital.””

A cold silence filled the room.

The nurse standing near the doorway immediately looked uncomfortable.

“I’m going to ask everyone except authorized medical staff to leave.””

Detective Collins nodded.

But before anyone moved, Amelia grabbed my hand.

“Mom.””

“Yes?””

“Promise me something.””

“What?””

“If anything happens…”

I squeezed her fingers.

“Nothing is going to happen.””

“Promise me.””

Her eyes were desperate.

I nodded.

“I promise.””

She looked relieved for only a moment.

Then the room lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The monitor beside her bed went black for three seconds.

The nurse looked up.

“That’s strange.””

Detective Collins immediately moved toward the door.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

The emergency lights turned on.

The room was dim.

And in that dimness, Amelia whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“He found me.””

I turned.

“What?””

She was staring at the window.

The fourth floor window.

There was no way anyone could be outside.

But her fear was real.

“Amelia?””

She pointed.

“Someone was watching me.””

Detective Collins walked to the glass.

She looked outside.

Nothing.

Only rain.

Only the dark city below.

She turned back.

“Did you see someone?””

Amelia nodded slowly.

“Last night.””

My heart stopped.

“Last night?””

“When I was unconscious.””

Detective Collins frowned.

“You remember that?””

“Not everything.””

Amelia looked down.

“But I remember voices.””

“What voices?””

She closed her eyes.

“Ryan’s.””

The room became silent again.

“And another man.””

“Did you recognize him?””

“No.””

“What did they say?””

Amelia’s breathing became shallow.

“They thought I couldn’t hear.””

She looked at me.

“They were talking about the burial.””

I felt sick.

“What did Ryan say?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“He said, ‘Once she’s underground, nobody will believe her.’”

My hands covered my mouth.

Detective Collins wrote something down.

“Anything else?””

Amelia nodded.

“The other man asked if the medication was enough.””

“And Ryan?””

“He said…”

She stopped.

“Amelia?””

“He said, ‘Even if she wakes up, she won’t remember anything.’”

I felt a wave of anger.

“He wanted to erase you.””

Amelia looked at me.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“He wanted me alive.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She wiped a tear from her face.

“That was the worst part.””

I didn’t understand.

“If he wanted me dead, why didn’t he just kill me?””

Nobody answered.

Amelia looked at the folder.

“Because he needed something from me.””

Detective Collins stepped closer.

“What?””

“My fingerprint.””

The words hit harder than a scream.

“What do you mean?””

Amelia looked at the detective.

“The trust documents.””

Detective Collins immediately understood.

“He needed your signature?””

“Yes.””

“But you were unconscious.””

Amelia nodded.

“He had already tried.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Before the accident, he brought papers home.””

“What papers?””

“Transfer documents.””

“For the inheritance?””

“Yes.””

“And you refused?””

Amelia nodded.

“I told him I knew what he was doing.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He got angry.””

I remembered that night.

The phone call.

The strange message from Amelia saying she needed to talk to me.

Then nothing.

The next morning, Ryan called.

He said there had been an accident.

He cried.

He acted broken.

And I believed him.

Because I wanted to.

Because the alternative was too painful.

Detective Collins looked through the folder again.

“There’s something else.””

She pulled out a document.

“This was hidden behind the financial records.””

She handed it to Amelia.

Amelia looked at it.

Then her face changed.

“No.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Amelia.””

She slowly gave me the paper.

It was a medical report.

Not hers.

Someone else’s.

At the top was a name.

A name I recognized.

My heart stopped.

Because I had seen it before.

Years ago.

At my father’s funeral.

“Who is this?”” Detective Collins asked.

Amelia looked at her.

“My father’s business partner.””

I stared at the page.

“That man died ten years ago.””

Amelia shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“He didn’t.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Grandpa’s partner disappeared.””

I remembered the stories.

The rumors.

The missing money.

The investigation that ended without answers.

Everyone said he ran away.

Everyone said he betrayed my father.

But Amelia was shaking.

“Ryan found him.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew the truth.””

“About what?””

She looked toward the door.

“About my grandfather’s death.””

Nobody spoke.

The rain outside grew louder.

Detective Collins looked serious.

“Are you saying your grandfather was murdered?””

Amelia didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Her expression said enough.

Then her phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

This time from Ryan.

Detective Collins read it aloud.

*You should have taken the money and stayed quiet.*

A second message appeared immediately.

*Now your mother gets hurt too.*

My body went numb.

Detective Collins grabbed the phone.

“He’s threatening you.””

Amelia stared at the screen.

“He’s desperate.””

“No,” I whispered.

I looked at my daughter.

“He’s scared.””

Because Ryan knew something.

Something we didn’t.

Something hidden in that evidence.

Something worth trying to bury his own wife alive.

Detective Collins turned to her partner.

“We need protection on this room.””

The officer nodded and left.

I sat beside Amelia.

For the first time since she woke up, she looked like the child I used to hold.

Not a grown woman.

Not someone fighting a powerful enemy.

Just my daughter.

“Mom.””

I brushed her hair back.

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She looked at the closed hospital door.

“When I hid the evidence…”

She paused.

“I didn’t hide it alone.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Someone helped me.””

“Who?””

Amelia looked at me.

And the answer terrified me.

“Someone Ryan trusts.””

Before I could ask another question, the door handle slowly turned.

Detective Collins reached for her weapon.

The door opened.

May you like

And the person standing there made Amelia whisper one name.

“Emily…”
