Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The person standing in the doorway wasn’t a stranger.
That was what made it worse.
She wasn’t holding a weapon.
She wasn’t wearing a disguise.
She wasn’t someone who looked dangerous.
She looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Emily Carter.
Ryan’s younger sister.
The woman who had hugged me at Amelia’s wedding.
The woman who had cried beside Ryan when we thought Amelia was gone.
The woman who had told me, “I don’t know how Ryan will survive this.””
Now she stood in my daughter’s hospital room, holding a small paper bag in her hand.
And my daughter looked terrified.
“Emily…” Amelia whispered again.
Emily froze.
Her eyes moved from Amelia to the detective.
Then to the police officer standing outside the door.
She looked like someone who had walked into a room expecting one thing and found something completely different.
“I thought you’d still be unconscious,” she said.
The words fell into the room like a stone.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Emily.
She realized what she had said.
Too late.
Detective Collins slowly stepped forward.
“Excuse me?””
Emily’s face went pale.
“I—I didn’t mean…”
“You didn’t mean what?””
Emily looked at Amelia.
“I mean… I heard she was waking up.””
Amelia stared at her.
“How did you hear that?””
Emily opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched her carefully.
Because I had spent enough time around liars.
Ryan had taught me something.
The truth doesn’t always appear in words.
Sometimes it appears in hesitation.
In fear.
In the moment someone realizes they have said too much.
Detective Collins held out her hand.
“ID.””
Emily blinked.
“What?””
“Your identification.””
“Why?””
“Because right now, you entered a protected hospital room without being listed as approved family.””
Emily slowly handed over her wallet.
The detective checked it.
Then looked at Amelia.
“You know this woman?””
Amelia nodded.
“She’s Ryan’s sister.””
Emily flinched at the name.
Detective Collins noticed.
“Mrs. Carter, why are you afraid of her?””
Amelia didn’t answer immediately.
That worried me.
My daughter wasn’t someone who easily accused people.
She had spent her whole life believing in giving people chances.
Even Ryan.
Especially Ryan.
“I’m not afraid of Emily,” Amelia finally said.
Emily released a small breath.
Then Amelia continued.
“I’m afraid of what she knows.””
Emily looked down.
That was the answer.
She knew something.
I stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Emily looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like we’re still family.””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“I’m sorry.””
“Sorry?””
I laughed bitterly.
“My daughter was almost buried alive.””
Emily looked at Amelia.
“I know.””
Those two words stopped me.
“You know?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I know more than I should.””
Detective Collins crossed her arms.
“Start talking.””
Emily looked toward the door.
Then back at Amelia.
“Is Ryan here?””
“No,” Detective Collins said.
“Are you sure?””
The detective’s expression hardened.
“You’re asking a lot of questions for someone who just walked into an investigation.””
Emily swallowed.
“I need to know if I’m safe.””
Nobody answered.
Because none of us knew.
Finally, Emily sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“Ryan and I grew up in a house where everything was about winning.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Amelia?””
“Everything.””
She looked at Amelia.
“My brother learned early that people were tools.””
Amelia looked away.
“He doesn’t see people as people.””
Emily’s voice broke.
“He sees what they can give him.””
Detective Collins leaned closer.
“Why didn’t you report him?””
Emily looked at the floor.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of your brother?””
Emily nodded.
“He ruined people who got in his way.””
“How?””
Emily hesitated.
Then said:
“My father.””
The room went quiet.
“What about your father?”” I asked.
Emily looked at me.
“Ryan destroyed him.””
My heart started racing.
“Why?””
“Because my father knew about the money.””
“The money from my father’s company?””
Emily nodded.
“Your father and mine were business partners.””
I remembered.
Two men who built something together.
Two men who were once inseparable.
Until one disappeared.
Until my father died years later.
Emily continued.
“When my father found out Ryan was moving money through fake accounts, he threatened to expose him.””
“And then?””
“He disappeared.””
Detective Collins wrote something down.
“Disappeared as in?””
Emily looked at her.
“Ryan said he left.””
“But you didn’t believe that?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I saw Ryan burn my father’s phone.””
A chill ran through me.
“Why would you keep that secret?””
Emily looked at Amelia.
“Because Ryan told me if I spoke, Amelia would suffer.””
My daughter looked stunned.
“He threatened you with me?””
Emily nodded.
“He knew you were the only person I cared about.””
The room was silent.
Then Amelia spoke.
“You helped me.””
Emily looked at her.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night before the accident.””
I moved closer.
“What happened that night?””
Emily took a deep breath.
“You called me.””
Amelia frowned.
“I did?””
“Yes.””
“Why would I call you?””
“Because you found something.””
Emily looked at the folder.
“You found the account connecting Ryan to your grandfather’s missing money.””
Detective Collins looked up.
“Wait.””
She flipped through the documents.
“Are you saying Ryan was involved with the disappearance of Amelia’s grandfather’s business partner?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw the messages.””
“What messages?””
“Between Ryan and someone else.””
Amelia’s face tightened.
“The person who helped him?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Emily became silent.
Too silent.
“Emily,” Amelia said.
“Who was Ryan working with?””
Emily looked at the door.
Then whispered:
“Your doctor.””
Everyone froze.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“Dr. Miller?””
Emily nodded.
“He’s not just someone Ryan paid.””
Detective Collins stepped forward.
“What is he?””
Emily looked terrified.
“He’s Ryan’s father.””
The room exploded into silence.
I looked at Amelia.
She looked just as shocked.
“No,” she whispered.
Emily nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s true.””
Detective Collins immediately pulled out her phone.
“Why would he hide his identity?””
“Because his father officially died years ago.””
“What?””
Emily looked at the folder.
“Ryan changed his last name after his father disappeared.””
I felt dizzy.
Everything connected.
The fake accident.
The doctor.
The money.
The inheritance.
But there was still one question.
“If Emily knew all of this,” I said, “why didn’t she tell us?””
Emily looked at me.
And the sadness in her face was worse than fear.
“Because I tried.””
“When?””
“The morning after Amelia disappeared.””
“What happened?””
Emily’s hands began shaking.
“I went to the police.””
My heart lifted.
“Then why didn’t anything happen?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because before I could finish my statement…”
She stopped.
“Before you could finish?””
Emily looked at Amelia.
“Someone sent me proof that Ryan had already planned everything.””
“What proof?””
Emily reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small black notebook.
Amelia immediately recognized it.
“That’s mine.””
Emily handed it over.
“I took it before Ryan could find it.””
Amelia opened the notebook.
Her face changed as she read the first page.
“What is it?””
She looked at me.
Her voice trembled.
“It’s Ryan’s handwriting.””
Detective Collins took the notebook.
She read silently.
Then her expression changed.
“What does it say?””
She looked at Amelia.
“Your husband had a list.””
“A list of what?””
The detective turned the page.
And everyone saw the names.
Five names.
Five people.
Five targets.
At the bottom of the page was the final name.
Amelia Carter.
But beneath it…
There was another line.
A name that made Emily step backward.
Because she knew exactly who it was.
Detective Collins read it aloud.
“Margaret Carter.””
My heart stopped.
Ryan wasn’t finished.
May you like
He hadn’t just planned to erase Amelia.
He planned to erase me next.
