Chapter 2: The Name on the Documents

The Carter family's private sitting room was usually reserved for important guests.

That evening, it looked more like a courtroom.

Daniel Hayes stood beside the fireplace, holding a dark leather briefcase. He was in his early sixties, with silver hair, a perfectly tailored navy suit, and the kind of expression that suggested he had spent his entire career delivering news people didn't want to hear.

Beside him stood a younger attorney carrying several document folders.

Marcus's father, Richard Carter, sat in his leather armchair.

He looked older than I remembered.

His silver hair was thinner, and his hands trembled slightly as he reached for his glass of water.

Diane entered first.

"What is going on?"" she demanded.

Daniel glanced at her.

"Good evening, Mrs. Carter.""

"Don't good-evening me, Daniel. Why have you brought legal documents into my home?""

"Because Mr. Carter requested my presence.""

Richard slowly lifted his head.

"I did.""

Diane turned toward him.

"Richard, we have guests upstairs.""

"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before inviting half the business community to dinner.""

Brielle entered behind Marcus.

"Father, what's happening?""

Richard didn't answer.

His eyes moved toward me.

"Nia.""

I nodded.

"Mr. Carter.""

He gestured toward the empty chair opposite him.

"Please sit.""

Diane let out a sharp breath.

"Excuse me? Why is she being treated like the guest of honor?""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"Because Mrs. Whitmore is the majority shareholder of Whitmore Holdings.""

Silence.

Not ordinary silence.

The kind that makes every small sound feel enormous.

Brielle blinked.

"Mrs. Who?""

Daniel didn't look at her.

"Mrs. Nia Whitmore.""

Marcus turned toward me.

His mouth opened slightly.

I remained standing.

Daniel continued.

"Following the death of her father, Mr. Alexander Whitmore, Nia inherited the controlling shares of Whitmore Holdings, along with the voting rights attached to those shares.""

Diane's face went completely still.

Richard slowly placed his glass on the table.

"That's correct.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Wait. Your father was Alexander Whitmore?""

"Yes.""

"The Alexander Whitmore?""

I nodded.

He took a step backward.

Everyone in the business community knew my father.

He had started with a small commercial property in Chicago and built it into a national real estate and investment corporation. Over three decades, Whitmore Holdings acquired office buildings, hotels, shopping centers, logistics companies, and several technology firms.

My father's name appeared in business magazines.

His charitable foundation funded hospitals and university scholarships.

And the corporation was worth billions.

But I had never needed anyone to know that when they looked at me.

Diane finally found her voice.

"That is impossible.""

Daniel calmly removed a document from his folder.

"Mrs. Carter, these are certified ownership records. There is no ambiguity.""

Brielle stared at the papers.

"So you're telling me she's... rich?""

I looked at her.

"No, Brielle. I'm telling you I inherited my father's responsibilities.""

Her cheeks reddened.

Daniel placed another folder on the table.

"There's an additional matter that requires everyone's attention.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Go ahead.""

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

"Your father contacted our office three weeks ago regarding an unauthorized attempt to restructure Carter Development's outstanding obligations.""

Marcus frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?""

"Your signature appears on the preliminary financing agreement.""

Diane immediately interrupted.

"That was a family business matter.""

Daniel looked at her.

"It involved a proposed transfer of several Carter Development assets to a subsidiary of Whitmore Holdings.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Without my approval.""

Diane folded her arms.

"You were unavailable. Someone had to protect the family.""

Richard's voice dropped.

"By putting my company into another company's hands?""

"Don't exaggerate.""

Daniel turned a page.

"There's another concern. The documents include representations about the Carter family's financial position that do not match the information provided during our previous negotiations.""

Marcus looked genuinely confused.

"What representations?""

Daniel slid a copy across the table.

"Your company has approximately forty-eight million dollars in outstanding obligations. Several properties have been pledged as collateral, and two major lenders have issued notices of default.""

Marcus stared at the document.

"Forty-eight million?""

Richard closed his eyes.

Diane snapped.

"Those figures are temporary. We have arrangements.""

"With whom?"" Richard asked.

She said nothing.

Brielle looked between her parents.

"Mom?""

Diane finally turned toward me.

Her expression was different now.

The contempt was gone.

In its place was something much more calculating.

"Nia, darling...""

I almost smiled.

Darling.

Twenty minutes earlier, I had been the woman who should be grateful for a chair.

Now I was darling.

She stepped closer.

"Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding. We were only trying to understand your background.""

I looked at her.

"You asked whether I bought my dress at a discount store.""

Her lips parted.

"I was making conversation.""

"You told me I should be grateful you let me sit at your table.""

Diane glanced at the other people in the room.

"That was taken out of context.""

"No. It was taken exactly as you intended.""

Marcus moved toward me.

"Nia, why didn't you tell me?""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Tell you what?""

"That your father owned Whitmore Holdings. That you were the majority shareholder.""

"I told you my father left me an inheritance.""

"You never said it was worth billions.""

"You never asked what it was worth.""

He looked wounded.

"Because I thought we trusted each other.""

I felt something twist in my chest.

"Marcus, trust is not the same thing as giving someone a complete financial statement of your life.""

He looked away.

Richard suddenly coughed.

Daniel stepped toward him.

"Sir, are you all right?""

Richard waved him off.

"I'm fine.""

Then he looked at me.

"Nia, there's a reason I wanted you here tonight.""

Diane immediately stiffened.

"Richard, don't.""

He ignored her.

"Six months ago, I asked your father to consider a partnership between our companies. Alexander agreed in principle, but he wanted one condition.""

I frowned.

"What condition?""

Richard looked directly at me.

"That the Carter family would never be allowed to use your inheritance to cover its debts.""

I stared at him.

"Why would he say that?""

Richard sighed.

"Because he knew my family.""

Diane's face flushed.

"That is enough, Richard.""

"No," he said sharply.

"It isn't.""

He turned back toward me.

"Your father knew our business was struggling. He also knew Diane had been approaching investors behind my back. He warned me that if the arrangement wasn't handled carefully, someone would try to manipulate you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Manipulate me how?""

Daniel opened the final folder.

"Mrs. Whitmore, your father included a protective clause in his estate documents. It specifically prevents the transfer of controlling shares to a spouse, family member, or business associate without your independent approval.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why would that be relevant?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Because someone has already attempted to obtain those shares.""

He removed a photocopy from the folder.

There was my name.

My signature.

And beneath it, an authorization granting Marcus Carter temporary voting rights over a portion of my holdings.

I stared at the document.

I had never seen it before.

"That's not my signature.""

Daniel nodded.

"We believe so.""

Marcus looked horrified.

"Who submitted that?""

Daniel turned toward Richard.

Richard's expression had become unreadable.

Then Daniel placed one more sheet on the table.

The authorization had been submitted through a private legal office.

The name of the requesting representative appeared at the bottom.

Diane Carter.

Brielle whispered, "Mom?""

Diane stood motionless.

I looked at the woman who had spent dinner explaining why I didn't belong in her family.

"Why did you try to obtain my shares?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Marcus.

And what she said next made my blood run cold.

"Because your husband asked me to.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Mom, what are you talking about?""

Diane's eyes filled with tears.

But I had already learned that tears did not always mean regret.

She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Then she placed it on the table.

"Ask your wife what she signed six months ago.""

My eyes dropped to the envelope.

Inside was a document bearing my name.

May you like

And this time, I recognized the signature.

It was mine.
