Chapter 5: The Missing Man and the Locked Room
I read Evelyn's message twice.
Thomas Reed had accessed my father's private archive.
Three days after disappearing.
The archive wasn't an ordinary collection of business files. My father had maintained a private records room at the Whitmore headquarters, separate from the company's main legal department.
It contained original contracts, confidential correspondence, handwritten notes, and documents he had never trusted to digital storage.
Only four people had authorized access.
My father.
Thomas Reed.
Daniel Hayes.
And me.
"Where is he?"" I asked.
Evelyn answered immediately.
"The headquarters. Security detected his access card at 9:42 p.m.""
I glanced at the clock.
It was almost ten.
"Has anyone seen him?""
"Not yet. The building manager says someone entered the executive archive floor, but the cameras were disabled.""
Daniel overheard.
"That's impossible. The archive has independent security.""
"Apparently, someone had the override credentials," Evelyn replied.
I looked at Daniel.
"Can we get there?""
"Yes. But I strongly recommend that we bring security.""
Richard stepped forward.
"I'm coming.""
Diane immediately grabbed his sleeve.
"Richard, you're not going anywhere.""
He gently removed her hand.
"I've spent twenty years letting you tell me what I can and cannot do. I'm finished.""
Marcus moved toward me.
"I'm coming too.""
I looked at him.
"No.""
"Nia, this involves my company.""
"It involves my father's company.""
"Which is connected to my family.""
I stared at him.
"Your family has spent the evening trying to take it from me.""
He swallowed.
"Please. Just let me help.""
I almost said yes.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything, some part of me still wanted to believe that the man I married was somewhere beneath the lies.
But trust wasn't something I could manufacture simply because I missed him.
"Stay here, Marcus.""
I turned toward Daniel.
"Let's go.""
Twenty-five minutes later, our convoy pulled into the underground entrance of Whitmore Holdings.
The headquarters occupied forty-two floors of a glass building overlooking downtown Chicago. My father had chosen the location because he loved watching the city wake up from his office windows.
I had spent countless afternoons there as a child.
Back then, the security guards knew me as the little girl who carried a stuffed rabbit and insisted on visiting her father before going home.
Now they stood straighter when I entered.
"Good evening, Ms. Whitmore.""
"Has anyone found Mr. Reed?""
"No, ma'am.""
"Where was his access card used?""
"Executive archive level.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Take me there.""
The elevator climbed in silence.
When the doors opened, the corridor was dark except for the emergency lights.
A security guard approached us.
"Ms. Whitmore, there's something you should see.""
He pointed toward the archive door.
It was slightly open.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did anyone enter?""
"We didn't want to disturb the scene.""
I pushed the door gently.
Inside, the room looked as though a storm had passed through it.
File drawers stood open.
Folders covered the floor.
A framed photograph of my father lay broken beside his desk.
I walked toward it and carefully picked it up.
The photograph had been taken during the opening of our first hotel in Boston.
My father was smiling.
I was standing beside him, wearing a yellow dress and holding a pair of oversized scissors.
On the back, he had written something.
Never let anyone convince you that what we built is more important than who we built it for.
I swallowed hard.
Daniel approached.
"Are you all right?""
I nodded.
"Find out what they took.""
He examined the cabinets.
"Several original shareholder agreements are missing. So are the estate authorization records.""
I turned.
"Which authorization records?""
"The documents establishing your voting rights after your father's death.""
I felt a chill.
Those documents proved that my shares could not be transferred without my personal authorization and independent legal verification.
Without them, someone could attempt to challenge the validity of my ownership.
"Can they use those documents to take control?""
"Not legitimately," Daniel replied.
"But they could create enough uncertainty to delay board decisions.""
A faint sound came from the adjoining office.
Everyone froze.
The security guard drew closer to the door.
"Who's there?""
No answer.
He pushed it open.
A man stood beside the filing cabinet.
He was wearing a gray coat and holding a black leather folder.
Thomas Reed.
His face was thinner than I remembered.
His hair had grown longer, and there was a small cut above his eyebrow.
But it was definitely him.
"Thomas.""
He turned.
For a moment, he looked relieved.
Then he saw Daniel.
And his expression changed.
"You're not supposed to be here," he said.
I stared at him.
"This is my father's building.""
Thomas looked down at the folder.
"I need to explain something.""
"Then start with why you've been taking confidential documents.""
He glanced toward the door.
"Because someone is preparing to destroy the company.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Your husband.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Marcus?""
"Not alone.""
He placed the folder on the desk.
"Victor Hale has been funding the Carter family's debts. But the money wasn't simply a loan. It was payment for information.""
"What information?""
"Your father's estate structure. The voting agreements. The names of the board members who would oppose a hostile takeover.""
I looked at the folder.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
Thomas let out a bitter breath.
"Because I was the one who gave them access.""
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at him.
"You're admitting to providing confidential information to Hale?""
Thomas nodded.
"I was approached eight months ago. They offered me money. A lot of it.""
I took a step back.
"You worked for my father for twenty years.""
"I know.""
"He trusted you.""
"I know.""
"Then why?""
Thomas looked directly at me.
"My daughter was diagnosed with a rare illness. The treatment wasn't covered by insurance. I was drowning in medical bills.""
His voice cracked.
"Hale knew about it. He offered to pay everything.""
I looked at him.
For the first time, I noticed the exhaustion in his face.
But sympathy couldn't erase what he had done.
"How much did they pay you?""
"Two million dollars.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Two million?""
Thomas nodded.
"And when I realized what they intended to do, I tried to stop it.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of bank transfers, emails, and draft agreements.
One document caught my attention.
It was a proposed transfer of voting authority to Carter Strategic Partners.
The signature line was blank.
But the attached schedule listed the assets Victor Hale wanted.
Almost every major property owned by Whitmore Holdings was included.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Close before December 1. Once the estate challenge begins, she loses leverage.
I looked at Thomas.
"What estate challenge?""
He hesitated.
Then he removed a sealed envelope from his coat.
"Your father left something else.""
I stared at it.
The envelope was old, yellowed at the edges, and sealed with the Whitmore family crest.
My name was written across the front.
In my father's handwriting.
I had not seen that handwriting in two years.
My fingers trembled as I took it.
"Why do you have this?""
"Your father gave it to me three weeks before he died. He instructed me to deliver it only if someone attempted to challenge your inheritance.""
I broke the seal.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
Nia, if you're reading this, someone has tried to take what I left you. Do not trust the first person who claims to be protecting you. The danger is closer than you think.
I stopped reading.
There was a second page.
And at the bottom, my father had written one final sentence.
The person who helped Victor Hale enter our company was someone I allowed into our family.
I looked up.
"Thomas, who was it?""
He swallowed.
"Your mother-in-law.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"Your father knew Diane Carter before you married Marcus. She approached him years ago with a proposal involving Carter Development.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible. My father never mentioned her.""
Thomas's voice dropped.
"Because he discovered something about her that he didn't want you to know.""
Before I could ask another question, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly turned toward me.
"Ms. Whitmore, the security team has just located another person inside the building.""
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your husband.""
I stared at him.
"Marcus is here?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Daniel looked toward the elevator.
"He's in your father's private office.""
Then the security guard's radio crackled.
A second voice came through.
"Sir, we have a situation. Mr. Carter isn't alone.""
I gripped the letter.
"Who is with him?""
The guard listened for another moment.
May you like
Then his face changed.
"Mrs. Carter.""
