Chapter 6: The Woman My Father Feared

I didn't wait for Daniel.

I ran.

The corridor seemed endless, my heels striking the marble floor as the security team followed behind me.

My father's private office was at the far end of the executive floor.

The door stood open.

Inside, Marcus was standing beside the desk.

Diane was near the window.

And on the desk lay a photograph of my father, a collection of estate documents, and a small silver key.

My father's key.

The one he had kept on his personal keychain for as long as I could remember.

I stopped in the doorway.

"What are you doing here?""

Marcus turned immediately.

"Nia.""

Diane didn't move.

Instead, she looked at the envelope in my hand.

"So you found it.""

I stared at her.

"You knew about the letter?""

She gave a small, humorless smile.

"Your father was a very difficult man to deal with.""

I stepped into the room.

"How long have you been dealing with him?""

Diane glanced at Marcus.

He looked uncomfortable.

"Mother," he said quietly.

She ignored him.

"Before you and Marcus ever met, Alexander Whitmore and I had a disagreement.""

"What kind of disagreement?""

"A business disagreement.""

Thomas entered behind me.

"That's not what happened.""

Diane's expression tightened.

"Thomas, I suggest you stay out of this.""

He stepped forward.

"You threatened to expose Alexander's private financial arrangements unless he agreed to fund your husband's company.""

Richard's voice came from the hallway.

"What?""

I turned.

He had arrived with Brielle and Connor.

Richard looked at his wife.

"Diane, is that true?""

She sighed.

"You're all making this far more dramatic than it needs to be.""

Richard stepped into the room.

"I want an answer.""

Diane looked at him.

Then she looked at me.

"Fine. Yes. I approached your father.""

"Why?""

"Because Carter Development needed capital. Your father had it. He refused to help.""

"That doesn't explain the blackmail.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Your father had information about a property transaction involving my family. Information that could have ruined us.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Was that true?""

He nodded slowly.

"Alexander investigated several suspicious property transfers connected to Carter Development. The records were included in a confidential legal review.""

Diane gave a bitter laugh.

"He was going to destroy my family over a few accounting irregularities.""

Richard stared at her.

"Accounting irregularities?""

She turned toward him.

"Don't pretend you were innocent. You knew the company had problems.""

"I knew we had debt. I didn't know you were threatening people.""

Diane looked away.

I approached the desk.

"Why did you come here tonight?""

She gestured toward the documents.

"To prevent a disaster.""

"By breaking into my father's office?""

"By retrieving something that belongs to our family.""

I looked at the silver key.

"What does that open?""

Diane's eyes moved toward it.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear.

Marcus noticed.

"Mom?""

She quickly looked away.

"Nothing.""

I picked up the key.

It was heavier than I remembered.

A small engraving ran along its side.

W-17.

Daniel stepped closer.

"That's the old archive designation.""

I turned toward him.

"There's another archive?""

He nodded.

"Your father maintained a separate vault beneath the original Whitmore headquarters. It was sealed after his death.""

"Why wasn't I told?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because the vault was subject to a separate instruction in your father's will. It could only be opened under specific circumstances.""

Thomas nodded.

"That's why I came here. The key is required.""

Diane suddenly moved toward me.

"Give it to me.""

I stepped back.

"No.""

"You don't understand what you're holding.""

"Then explain it.""

Her voice became sharp.

"That vault contains documents that could destroy Marcus.""

Marcus stared at his mother.

"What?""

Diane turned toward him.

"Stop asking questions!""

I looked at Marcus.

"Did you know about the vault?""

"No.""

"Did you know your mother had been working with Victor Hale?""

He shook his head.

"I knew she was looking for investors. I didn't know about the rest.""

Diane laughed.

"You're a terrible liar, Marcus.""

He turned toward her.

"Mother, what are you talking about?""

She stepped closer to him.

"Do you think Victor gave you twelve million dollars because he admired your business skills?""

Marcus went still.

"What?""

"He gave you that money because you were useful.""

Richard looked horrified.

"Money?""

Diane's lips tightened.

"Marcus received an advance. It was supposed to cover the family's immediate expenses.""

I turned toward my husband.

"Did you receive twelve million dollars?""

He looked at the floor.

"Yes.""

The word was barely audible.

I felt my chest tighten.

"Where is it?""

"In an account.""

"Whose account?""

He didn't answer.

Daniel spoke instead.

"According to the documents we have, the funds were transferred to Carter Strategic Partners.""

Marcus looked up.

"That wasn't supposed to be permanent.""

Diane laughed.

"Oh, Marcus. You really thought you were going to keep it?""

He stared at her.

"What?""

She leaned closer.

"Victor was never going to let you control anything. The moment he obtained voting authority, he intended to remove you from the company.""

Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.

"You told me I would be a partner.""

"I told you what you needed to hear.""

I watched my husband absorb the truth.

For months, he had convinced himself he was protecting his family.

Now he was discovering that his mother had used him just as thoroughly as he had used me.

But I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Daniel checked his phone.

"Ms. Whitmore, we need to leave this floor. The security team has identified an unauthorized remote access attempt on the archive system.""

I looked at him.

"Can they access the vault?""

"Not without the key.""

Thomas shook his head.

"That's not entirely true.""

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked at Diane.

"There's another way.""

Diane's face went pale.

"Thomas, don't.""

He continued.

"Alexander created a secondary authorization procedure. If the key was unavailable, the vault could be opened through a biometric confirmation and a second witness.""

I frowned.

"Who is the second witness?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"You.""

I glanced at the silver key in my hand.

"Then let's open it.""

Diane stepped forward.

"No!""

Her voice echoed through the office.

Richard grabbed her arm.

"Diane, stop.""

She pulled away.

"You don't know what you're doing, Nia. If you open that vault, there will be no going back.""

I looked at her.

"That sounds like a reason to open it.""

Daniel nodded.

"We should proceed through the proper legal channels. The vault's contents may be relevant to the attempted fraud and the proposed acquisition.""

We took the private elevator down to the building's basement.

The old archive was hidden behind a reinforced steel door. A small digital panel sat beside the lock.

I inserted the silver key.

A green light appeared.

Then the panel requested my fingerprint.

I placed my thumb against the scanner.

A soft mechanical click sounded.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room containing several filing cabinets, a locked safe, and a single wooden box on a table.

My father's handwriting was visible across the lid.

*FOR NIA. OPEN ONLY WHEN THE TRUTH CAN NO LONGER BE HIDDEN.*

I approached it slowly.

There was another envelope inside.

This one contained a photograph.

I picked it up.

My father stood beside a woman in front of a hotel ballroom. They were both smiling.

The woman was younger, but I recognized her immediately.

Diane Carter.

I turned the photograph over.

There was a date.

Twenty-six years earlier.

And beneath it, my father's handwriting:

The night Diane told me the truth about her first marriage.

I looked at Thomas.

"What first marriage?""

He took a breath.

"Before Diane married Richard Carter, she was married to another man.""

"Who?""

Thomas glanced at Daniel.

Then he looked at me.

"Your biological father.""

The room seemed to disappear.

I stared at him.

"That's impossible.""

Thomas shook his head.

"Alexander raised you as his daughter. He loved you as his daughter. But he wasn't the man who gave you life.""

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel opened the envelope.

There was a birth record inside.

A hospital certificate.

And a second photograph.

A young man holding a newborn baby.

On the back were four words.

My daughter. My Nia.

I looked at the name printed beneath the photograph.

Then my knees nearly gave way.

The man was Victor Hale.

And before anyone could speak, my phone began ringing.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

"Nia, my daughter.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who is this?""

The voice gave a quiet laugh.

"It's time we finally met.""

Then he said something that made the entire room freeze.

May you like

"Your father didn't die knowing the truth. Alexander Whitmore was murdered because he refused to give me what belonged to me.""

And the line went dead.
