Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Betrayal

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the ticking of the grandfather clock.

Daniel's words hung in the room.

The acquisition wasn't designed to save the Carter family.

It was designed to transfer control of Whitmore Holdings to someone else.

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Daniel glanced at Marcus before answering.

"Your husband, Ms. Whitmore.""

Nobody moved.

Then Brielle let out a small, disbelieving laugh.

"That's ridiculous.""

Daniel placed his phone on the table.

"The proposed resolution includes a transfer of voting authority to a newly established investment entity. That entity is registered under the name Carter Strategic Partners.""

Richard slowly turned toward his son.

"Marcus?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Father, let me explain.""

"Explain what?""

"It's not what you think.""

Richard pushed himself out of his chair.

"Then tell me what I'm supposed to think!""

Marcus looked at me.

"Nia, please. This was never supposed to happen like this.""

I folded my arms.

"How was it supposed to happen?""

He ran a hand through his hair.

"I was trying to protect us.""

"Us?""

"Our marriage. Your inheritance. My family. Everything.""

I stared at him.

"You submitted a document claiming I had approved an acquisition I knew nothing about. How exactly does that protect our marriage?""

He lowered his voice.

"I didn't create the entire plan.""

"Who did?""

He hesitated.

Diane stepped forward.

"Marcus, don't.""

I turned toward her.

"Interesting. You seem to know quite a lot about a plan you claimed had nothing to do with you.""

Her expression hardened.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"No, Diane. I'm finally asking the right questions.""

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

"Ms. Whitmore, there's another document you should review.""

He handed me a printed ownership structure.

Carter Strategic Partners had been established four months earlier.

Its registered directors were Marcus Carter and an individual named Victor Hale.

I recognized the name.

Victor Hale was a private equity investor who had once approached my father with an offer to purchase a significant portion of Whitmore Holdings.

My father had rejected him.

Not because the offer was too low.

Because he believed Victor was dangerous.

I looked at Daniel.

"Is this the same Victor Hale?""

"Yes.""

Richard's face changed.

"Victor Hale? The man who tried to acquire our commercial portfolio three years ago?""

Daniel nodded.

"He's been working with Mr. Carter for several months.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That's not accurate.""

Daniel slid another page across the table.

"These are communications between Carter Strategic Partners and Hale Capital.""

Marcus went pale.

I scanned the first page.

One message stood out.

Once Nia's voting authority is secured, the board becomes manageable. The Carter family will retain operational control, and Hale will receive the majority economic interest.

I read it again.

Then I looked at Marcus.

"You planned to give Victor Hale control of my father's company?""

Marcus stepped closer.

"It was a temporary arrangement.""

"Temporary?""

"We needed capital. Hale was willing to provide it.""

"Using my shares.""

"Your shares would have been protected.""

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"You were going to hand a stranger control of everything my father built, and you expected me to believe you were protecting it?""

Marcus's voice rose.

"You don't understand what I've been dealing with!""

"Then help me understand.""

He looked around the room.

"My father was losing control of Carter Development. The banks were demanding repayment. Mom was panicking.

I had employees depending on me. People were going to lose their jobs.""

Richard stared at him.

"So you decided to steal from your wife?""

"I wasn't stealing!""

"You used her name without permission!"" Richard shouted.

Marcus turned toward his father.

"I was trying to keep this family from collapsing.""

Richard's expression became bitter.

"By destroying another one?""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Brielle quietly asked, "How much were you supposed to get?""

Marcus looked at her.

"What?""

"From the deal. How much?""

He didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"According to the proposed agreement, Mr. Carter would receive a personal payment of twelve million dollars upon completion.""

Brielle covered her mouth.

"Marcus...""

Connor stepped away from the wall.

"That's why you asked me to introduce your mother to the lenders.""

Marcus turned sharply.

"Stay out of this.""

"No," Connor replied.

"I'm done staying out of it.""

He looked at me.

"Three weeks ago, Marcus told me his wife had already agreed to the transaction. He said the money would be used to clear his family's debt.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Was that true?""

He closed his eyes.

"I thought I could explain everything after the deal.""

"After you received twelve million dollars?""

He didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

I turned toward Daniel.

"Call the board. Suspend every pending transaction involving Carter Strategic Partners. Notify the banks that no guarantee or authorization has been approved by me.""

"Understood.""

"And I want an independent forensic audit of every document submitted in my name.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll arrange it immediately.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Nia, don't do this.""

I looked at him.

"Do what?""

"Destroy everything.""

I held his gaze.

"You did that yourself.""

He reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

His hand fell.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Evelyn appeared.

We've identified the beneficial owner of Carter Strategic Partners. There's a connection you need to see.

I opened the attached file.

The company wasn't registered to Marcus alone.

There was a second beneficiary.

Someone who had been receiving monthly payments from the Carter family for nearly a year.

Someone whose name appeared in my father's old legal correspondence.

My breath caught.

It was my father's former chief financial officer.

*Thomas Reed.*

The man who had managed my father's estate before his death.

The man who had personally recommended Daniel Hayes to me.

And the man who had once promised my father that he would protect me.

I looked up.

"Daniel, I need to speak with Thomas Reed.""

His expression changed.

"That may be difficult.""

"Why?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Because Thomas Reed disappeared three days ago.""

May you like

And then Evelyn sent another message.

Ms. Whitmore, he just accessed your father's private archive.
