Chapter 12 - CLARA’S FIRST NIGHT AT ADRIAN’S HOUSEClara did not move in permanently.

Elena remained hospitalized.
Temporary care was shared through court-approved arrangements.
Clara spent one weekend at Adrian’s home.
She arrived with one duffel bag.
Not because she owned nothing.
Because moving a child through crisis should be simple.
Adrian showed her the guest room.
She asked:
“Is this mine?”
“For the weekend.”

Then:
“Can I lock the door?”
His chest tightened.
“Yes.”
“Will anyone come in?”
“Not without knocking unless there’s an emergency.”
She nodded.
Boundary.
Small.
Important.
Then she asked:
“Do you have cereal?”
Adrian laughed.
“About twelve kinds.”
She looked impressed for the first time.
Not by the mansion.

Good.
