Chapter 12: The Person Buried Under the Wrong Name

I played the voicemail again.

Then a third time.

Your grandfather isn't the only person in this family who has been declared dead.

I looked at Nia.

“What does she mean?””

My wife was trembling.

“I don't know.””

“Stop saying that!””

She flinched.

I immediately regretted raising my voice, but I couldn't stop the questions.

“Who else has been declared dead?””

Nia shook her head.

“I swear, Arthur. I don't know.””

Lily stepped closer.

“Uncle Arthur, there's something strange about the voicemail.””

“What?””

“It came from a number registered to a prepaid phone. But the recording contains background noise.””

She replayed it.

A faint metallic sound could be heard behind Vanessa's voice.

Then a church bell.

Lily paused.

“That's not from a cemetery.””

“How do you know?””

“Because the bell pattern is familiar. I heard it when I visited the old Bennett family cemetery last month.””

I looked at her.

“Which cemetery?””

“St. Matthew's.””

The same cemetery where my mother was buried.

I felt a chill.

“Why would Vanessa meet Maya there?””

Lily shook her head.

“Maybe she isn't planning to meet her. Maybe she wants us to think she is.””

I looked at Nia.

“Where's Maya?””

“At your niece's apartment. She's safe.””

I nodded.

Then I called Detective Collins.

She answered immediately.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“Vanessa left a voicemail for Maya. She wants her to come to St. Matthew's Cemetery tomorrow morning.””

“Do not go.””

“We weren't planning to.””

“Good. Send me the recording.””

I forwarded it.

The detective continued.

“We've been reviewing the documents seized from the factory. There are several references to a person named Elena Brooks.””

I frowned.

“Who is that?””

“That's what we're trying to establish. According to the records, she was declared deceased in 2011.””

I looked at Nia.

She had gone completely pale.

“Do you know that name?””

She shook her head.

Then she whispered:

“Elena was my older sister.””

I stopped breathing.

“You had a sister?””

Nia nodded.

“She died before I met you.””

“How?””

“A car accident. At least, that's what I was told.””

Detective Collins spoke through the phone.

“Mrs. Bennett, can you tell me when the accident occurred?””

“December 2011.””

“Do you have a death certificate?””

“Yes.””

“Was there a funeral?””

Nia looked down.

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“Then what's the problem?””

The detective replied carefully.

“We found a life insurance policy issued to Elena Brooks in 2011. The beneficiary was Vanessa Bennett.””

Nia sat down.

“What?””

The detective continued.

“The policy was paid six months after Elena's reported death. But we found recent activity connected to the same identity.””

Nia began shaking her head.

“No. That's impossible.””

I took her hand.

“Who was Elena?””

“My sister. She was older than me by seven years. She worked as an accountant.””

“Did she know your father?””

“Yes. She helped him with the company accounts.””

Marcus entered the kitchen.

He had returned from the hospital with his shoulder bandaged.

He heard the final sentence.

“What did you say?””

I turned.

“Nia's sister. Elena.””

Marcus went completely still.

Then he sat down.

“That's who Vanessa was working with.””

I stared at him.

“You knew Elena?””

“I met her at the company.””

Nia looked at him.

“She died fifteen years ago.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. She disappeared.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

Marcus leaned forward.

“After Dad's stroke, Vanessa told everyone Elena had been killed in a car accident. But I never saw a body. I never saw a funeral notice. I only saw a death certificate.””

Nia covered her mouth.

“You never told me.””

“I didn't know she was your sister.””

I looked between them.

“Why would Vanessa fake her death?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Because Elena discovered the financial fraud.””

The kitchen became silent.

He continued.

“She found duplicate company accounts, false property transfers, and payments to shell companies. She told Dad she had proof.””

Nia's eyes filled.

“My sister wouldn't steal money.””

“I didn't say she did.””

“Then why would she disappear?””

Marcus looked at the detective's number on my phone.

“Because Vanessa needed someone to blame.””

I felt a terrible realization forming.

The missing money.

The forged signatures.

The hidden trust.

The false death certificate.

Vanessa had spent years creating a story in which everyone who threatened her simply disappeared.

I looked at Marcus.

“Where would Elena be now?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Nia suddenly stood.

“There was something at the funeral.””

I turned.

“What?””

She walked toward the living room and returned holding an old family photograph.

It showed Nia and a young woman standing together.

The woman had the same eyes, the same smile, and nearly the same facial structure as Nia.

“Elena gave me this before she died,” Nia whispered.

She turned it over.

There was a handwritten message.

If anything happens to me, find the woman who remembers the red bicycle.

I looked at Marcus.

“The red bicycle again.””

He nodded.

“Dad's workshop.””

Detective Collins, who had remained on the phone, spoke.

“Mr. Bennett, do not attempt to investigate this yourselves.””

I looked at the photograph.

“We need to find out whether Elena is alive.””

“We're already working on it.””

I turned toward Nia.

“Did your sister have any children?””

Nia shook her head.

“No. She never married.””

“Did she have a close friend?””

She hesitated.

Then something changed in her expression.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“Who?””

“The woman who worked for my father. She was our housekeeper when we were growing up.””

I remembered Mrs. Carter.

An elderly woman who used to bring homemade cookies whenever she visited my father's house.

She had stopped coming around years ago.

“Where is she now?””

Nia gave me an address.

Detective Collins instructed us to wait for officers, but an hour later, we were sitting outside a small house on the edge of town.

Two officers accompanied us.

Marcus knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

A curtain moved.

Then an elderly woman opened the door.

She looked at Nia.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the woman's eyes filled with tears.

“Nia?””

Nia stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter.””

The woman pulled her into an embrace.

“Oh, sweetheart. I thought I'd never see you again.””

I stood behind them.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you about Elena.””

The older woman's expression changed.

She looked over my shoulder.

Then she opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

The living room smelled of cinnamon and old furniture.

Mrs. Carter sat down slowly.

“I knew this day would come.””

Nia held her hand.

“Is my sister alive?””

The old woman closed her eyes.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia made a small, broken sound.

“Where is she?””

Mrs. Carter looked toward Marcus.

“Your father helped her disappear.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Dad knew?””

“He knew everything.””

I felt my heart pound.

“Why?””

Mrs. Carter looked at me.

“Because Elena discovered that Vanessa had stolen money from the company. But she also discovered something much worse.””

“What?””

The old woman reached into a drawer and removed a photograph.

It showed a young woman standing outside a hospital.

A newborn baby was wrapped in her arms.

I looked at the woman.

Elena.

Then I looked at the baby.

Something about the tiny face seemed familiar.

Mrs. Carter placed the photograph on the table.

“Your father arranged for Elena to leave the country. But before she went, she gave me instructions.””

Nia stared at the photograph.

“Whose baby is that?””

Mrs. Carter looked directly at me.

Then she said:

“It's Vanessa's child.””

I frowned.

“Vanessa had a baby?””

The old woman nodded.

“She gave birth in 2010. But the baby was never registered under her name.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Where is the child now?””

Mrs. Carter's eyes filled with tears.

She looked at Nia.

Then at me.

“Living under another name.””

I stared at the photograph.

The baby had a small birthmark near the left ear.

I had seen that birthmark before.

On Lily.

My niece.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“No.””

Marcus stood.

“Arthur?””

I looked at the photograph again.

Then at Mrs. Carter.

“Are you saying Lily is Vanessa's daughter?””

The old woman nodded.

“Vanessa's child was registered as the daughter of her younger sister's husband.””

I looked at Nia.

She was crying silently.

“Lily isn't my biological niece,” she whispered.

Mrs. Carter shook her head.

“No, sweetheart. She's your biological niece. She's Vanessa's daughter.””

The room went silent.

I thought about Lily's years in our home.

Her loyalty.

Her quiet intelligence.

Her habit of watching everyone.

Then I remembered the black SUV outside our house.

The photograph of Maya on its dashboard.

The way Lily had reacted whenever Vanessa's name came up.

I turned toward Marcus.

“Does Lily know?””

He shook his head.

Mrs. Carter reached for another document.

“This is why I was told to wait until the truth could no longer be hidden.””

She placed a birth certificate on the table.

The child's name was listed as Lily Carter Bennett.

The mother was Vanessa Bennett.

The father was blank.

But beneath the certificate was a handwritten note.

If Lily ever discovers who she is, tell her that her mother didn't abandon her.

I looked at the old woman.

“Then why did Vanessa leave her?””

Mrs. Carter's voice trembled.

“Because she believed Lily was the one person who could expose what she had done.””

My phone rang.

Lily.

I answered immediately.

“Lily, are you okay?””

Her voice was strange.

Quiet.

Almost frightened.

“Uncle Arthur, I need you to come home.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Aunt Vanessa is here.””

I stood.

“Get away from her.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Lily began crying.

“Because she just told me something.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

Lily's voice broke.

“She says she's my mother.””

Then I heard a second voice in the background.

Vanessa.

“Tell your uncle the rest, sweetheart.””

Lily took a shaky breath.

May you like

And said:

“Uncle Arthur, she says Maya and I were switched at birth.””
