Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph on my phone until the words began to blur.

My wife's signature.

My father's signature.

Six months before Maya was born.

I looked at Nia.

“Tell me that's fake.””

She didn't answer.

“Nia, look at me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“It's real, Arthur.””

The room went silent.

Caleb stepped away from the sofa. Noah looked at his mother as if he had never seen her before.

I lowered my phone.

“What did you sign?””

Nia pressed both hands against her stomach.

“Your father came to see me before Maya was born. He explained that he had established a trust for the child. He wanted me to become the legal custodian until Maya turned eighteen.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because he asked me not to.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My father was dead. Marcus was supposedly stealing money. Now you're telling me both of them had secret arrangements with my wife?””

“Arthur, please.””

“No. I want the truth.””

Nia looked toward Detective Collins.

The detective closed her folder.

“Mrs. Bennett, I think it's time you explain the document.””

Nia nodded reluctantly.

“Your father told me the trust wasn't simply about money. It contained ownership interests in several properties and a construction company. He said Marcus had been trying to take control of everything.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That's not entirely true.””

I turned toward him.

“You have some nerve.””

He ignored me.

“Dad was trying to protect the company from someone. I thought it was me at first.””

“Was it?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Partly.””

I stared at him.

He continued.

“Three years ago, when you lent me the $85,000, I wasn't covering gambling debts. Not all of it, anyway. I was paying a private investigator and trying to locate Dad.””

I shook my head.

“You told me it was a business emergency.””

“I couldn't tell you the truth.””

“You could have told me something.””

“I know.””

I stepped toward him.

“You let me believe you stole from me.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I thought keeping you angry at me would keep you away from what was happening.””

“That is the stupidest explanation I've ever heard.””

“I know.””

Nia finally spoke.

“Arthur, your father believed someone had been following him. He thought the person wanted access to Maya's trust.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“He never told me a name.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“What does my signature have to do with this?””

Nia wiped her cheeks.

“Your father wanted both parents to sign the original agreement. But he also included a condition.””

“What condition?””

She looked at Maya.

“If the trust was ever challenged, Maya would have to be protected by both parents. Neither of us could access the principal without the other's approval.””

I frowned.

“Then why did you sign alone?””

“I didn't. Your father told me you had already signed.””

I stared at her.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know that now.””

The detective took the phone from my hand and examined the photograph.

“Do you have the original document?””

Nia nodded.

“It's in the basement.””

We all looked toward the kitchen.

The basement.

The hidden room.

I felt as though my entire marriage had been constructed around a secret door.

“Then let's get it.””

We returned downstairs.

Nia opened the second filing cabinet and removed a thick folder secured with a leather strap.

Inside were several documents, including the original trust agreement.

I scanned the first page.

My name appeared beneath my father's.

But the signature wasn't mine.

It was a convincing imitation.

I looked up.

“Who forged this?””

Marcus stepped closer.

He studied the signature.

Then he went pale.

“I know that handwriting.””

“Whose?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pulled a chair toward the desk and sat down.

“My father's former attorney.””

Detective Collins frowned.

“Name?””

“Richard Hale.””

The detective wrote it down.

“Was he involved in the trust?””

“He prepared the original paperwork.””

I turned another page.

There were clauses I didn't understand, but one sentence stood out.

In the event of suspected fraudulent interference, the original beneficiary must be notified directly through the appointed guardian.

I looked at Nia.

“Who is the appointed guardian?””

She pointed to the bottom of the page.

My eyes followed her finger.

*Vanessa Bennett.*

My sister.

I felt sick.

“She was supposed to protect Maya?””

Nia nodded.

“Your father trusted her.””

I remembered Vanessa bringing Maya birthday gifts, helping with school projects, and sitting beside her at the hospital when she had pneumonia.

I remembered how she always insisted that Maya call her whenever she needed anything.

I had considered that kindness.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

Detective Collins photographed the documents.

“I'm going to need the original secured as evidence.””

Before she could finish, Lily's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

“It's Vanessa.””

Nobody spoke.

Lily answered and put it on speaker.

“Hello?””

Vanessa's cheerful voice filled the room.

“Sweetheart, is everyone home?””

Lily glanced at us.

“Yes.””

“Good. Put your uncle on the phone.””

I stepped forward.

“This is Arthur.””

There was a brief silence.

Then Vanessa sighed.

“Arthur, thank God. I've been trying to reach you.””

“Why?””

“Because I heard Marcus is there.””

I looked at my brother.

“How did you hear that?””

“It's a small family, Arthur.””

“What do you want?””

Her voice softened.

“I want to protect Maya.””

I almost laughed.

“From whom?””

“From Marcus.””

I looked at the trust agreement.

“Vanessa, did you sign a document appointing yourself Maya's guardian?””

Silence.

Then she said, “Where did you find that?””

The question answered more than she intended.

I gripped the phone.

“Why did you do it?””

“Arthur, you need to understand. Your father made decisions that put all of us in danger.””

“What decisions?””

She lowered her voice.

“Don't let Marcus show you that letter.””

I looked at the brown envelope still sitting on the basement desk.

“What letter?””

“The one your father left you.””

My blood ran cold.

Vanessa continued.

“Because if you read it, you'll discover that Maya isn't the only person he lied to.””

Then the call disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Detective Collins immediately reached for her radio.

“Get an address on Vanessa Bennett. We need to locate her.””

Marcus stood.

“She knows we found the basement.””

I turned toward him.

“How?””

He pointed at the ceiling.

“Because someone has been watching this house.””

And just then, Lily looked at her security monitor.

A black SUV had pulled up outside.

The driver remained inside.

But the passenger window slowly lowered.

A camera lens appeared.

Someone was recording us.

And on the dashboard sat a photograph of Maya.
