Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Was Always Mine

For several seconds, I couldn't look at anyone.

The document lay on the kitchen table.

My brother's name was printed beneath the words biological father.

My wife's signature appeared at the bottom.

And my daughter's entire life seemed to be balanced on a piece of paper.

“Arthur,” Nia whispered.

I raised one hand.

“Don't.””

She stopped.

Marcus stood near the doorway, looking as though he wanted to disappear.

I turned toward him.

“Is it true?””

He swallowed.

“Arthur, I need you to hear the whole story.””

“Is Maya your biological daughter?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer landed like a physical blow.

I stepped backward.

Caleb grabbed the edge of the counter. Noah stared at his uncle in disbelief.

Maya stood between her mother and me, clutching the folded note from my father.

I looked at my brother.

“You slept with my wife?””

Marcus shook his head immediately.

“No. Never. Not once.””

“Then explain this document.””

He approached the table and pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

“Read the date.””

I looked.

Six months before Maya's birth.

Then I looked at Nia.

“Were you pregnant before we got married?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

Nia pulled out a chair and sat down.

“I was already pregnant when your father approached me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She nodded through her tears.

“Before I met you, I was in a relationship. It ended badly. I discovered I was pregnant afterward.””

The room remained silent.

“Who was the father?””

Nia looked at Marcus.

“He was.””

I turned toward my brother.

“Were you dating Nia?””

“No,” Marcus replied.

“We had one relationship before you ever met her. It ended. We never intended to build a life together.””

I remembered the first time I introduced Nia to my family.

Marcus had smiled, shaken her hand, and congratulated me.

I remembered him standing beside me at our wedding.

I remembered him holding Maya in the hospital.

Had he known all along?

I looked at him.

“When did you find out?””

“Your father told me when Nia was pregnant.””

“And you kept quiet?””

Marcus nodded.

“Dad asked me to.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Apparently, Dad asked everybody to keep secrets.””

Nia reached for my hand.

I pulled it away.

“Arthur, I didn't marry you because of the money.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father convinced me that telling you would destroy your relationship with Marcus.””

I looked at my brother.

“Was that true?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. Dad was wrong.””

Nia continued.

“He said Marcus had been involved in dangerous financial dealings. He believed if you discovered the biological connection, you'd become involved in the family conflict. He wanted Maya to have a stable home.””

I stared at her.

“So you let me believe I was her biological father.””

“You were her father in every way that mattered.””

“That wasn't your decision to make alone.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know, Arthur.””

Maya suddenly stepped forward.

“Can everybody stop talking about me like I'm not here?””

We all turned.

Her cheeks were wet.

She looked at Marcus.

“Are you my father?””

Marcus knelt in front of her.

“Biologically, yes.””

She shook her head.

“Then why didn't you come to my school events? Why weren't you at my birthdays? Why didn't you teach me how to ride a bike?””

Marcus's face crumpled.

“Because I made a terrible decision a long time ago.””

“Did you want me?””

His eyes filled.

“Every single day.””

“Then why did you leave me?””

Marcus couldn't answer.

Maya turned toward me.

“Dad, are you still my dad?””

I felt something inside my chest break.

I crossed the room and knelt beside her.

I took both her hands.

“Listen to me. Nothing on that paper changes what you are to me.””

“But Uncle Marcus is my real father.””

I shook my head.

“Marcus is your biological father. I'm the man who held you when you had your first fever. I'm the man who sat outside your bedroom when you had nightmares. I'm the man who learned how to braid your hair because you cried when I couldn't do it properly.””

A small, broken laugh escaped her.

I continued.

“I'm the man who knows you hate tomatoes, who remembers your favorite song, and who will embarrass you at your graduation. You don't lose me because somebody finally tells the truth.””

Maya threw her arms around my neck.

I held her tightly.

Over her shoulder, I saw Marcus turn away.

For the first time that afternoon, I didn't hate him.

I simply felt sorry for the years we had all lost.

Detective Collins cleared her throat.

“I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's something we need to establish.””

She placed the original agreement beside the photocopy.

“The document naming Mr. Marcus as the biological father doesn't automatically establish any legal rights. We need to verify its authenticity and investigate the circumstances surrounding its creation.””

I nodded.

“Do whatever you need.””

She turned to Nia.

“Did you sign this voluntarily?””

Nia hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Were you threatened?””

“No.””

“Did you understand what you were signing?””

Nia looked at me.

“I understood that it was a declaration of biological paternity. But I was told it would remain confidential until Maya turned eighteen.””

Detective Collins made a note.

“Who prepared it?””

“Richard Hale.””

The detective exchanged a glance with her colleague.

“That name keeps appearing.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Because Hale controlled Dad's estate, the trust, and the company records. He knew everything.””

I looked at the photocopy.

“Why would my father create this document?””

Nia took the folded note from Maya.

She placed it beside the agreement.

“Because he wanted Arthur to remain Maya's legal father, even if the biological truth eventually came out.””

I looked at the six words.

Arthur is the father who chose you.

My eyes burned.

Then Lily appeared at the kitchen doorway.

“Uncle Arthur?””

I looked up.

She was holding her laptop.

“I found something.””

“What?””

She turned the screen toward us.

“Remember the security footage from the side entrance?””

I nodded.

“I recovered a deleted segment.””

She pressed play.

The image showed the kitchen pantry.

Marcus entered the room.

But he wasn't alone.

A second person followed him.

The footage was grainy, but the figure turned toward the camera for a brief moment.

I recognized the face immediately.

Vanessa.

My sister.

She was carrying a small black bag.

Lily paused the footage.

“There's more.””

She zoomed in.

Vanessa placed something beneath the pantry cabinet.

Then she looked directly at the camera.

And smiled.

I stared at the screen.

“What did she leave?””

Lily enlarged the image.

A small white envelope was visible beside her hand.

On it were three words.

*For Arthur's daughter.*

Maya stepped closer.

“That's not possible.””

I turned.

“What do you mean?””

She looked frightened again.

“Dad, Aunt Vanessa gave me an envelope yesterday.””

My heart stopped.

“Where is it?””

Maya pointed toward the staircase.

“I hid it in my bedroom.””

May you like

Then she whispered something that made Detective Collins immediately reach for her radio.

“She told me not to open it until my eighteenth birthday.””
