Chapter 14: The Daughter I Never Lost

I didn't answer immediately.

The detective repeated my name.

“Mr. Bennett?””

I looked at Maya.

She was standing in the doorway, holding a glass of water.

Her eyes searched my face.

“Dad?””

I swallowed.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“What's wrong?””

I put the phone on speaker.

Detective Collins explained the results carefully.

The DNA comparison showed that Maya was biologically related to both Nia and me.

Marcus was excluded as her biological father.

Lily was biologically related to Vanessa.

The hospital records had been manipulated, but there had been no exchange of babies.

I sat down.

For the first time in years, I felt as though the ground beneath my feet had stopped moving.

Maya looked at me.

“So you're really my dad?””

I smiled through tears.

“I told you.””

She rushed toward me.

I held her tightly.

Nia sat beside us.

She was crying too.

But I noticed something strange.

She wasn't looking at Maya.

She was looking at the DNA report.

I turned toward her.

“Nia?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I'm sorry.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

She looked down.

“There is something I need to explain.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

I was beginning to hate that phrase.

“Tell me.””

Nia took a deep breath.

“When Vanessa contacted me about the hospital records, I was terrified. She told me that Marcus might be Maya's biological father. She said she had evidence.””

I nodded slowly.

“She showed you the false report?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed her?””

“I didn't know what to believe.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you ask for a DNA test?””

Nia's eyes filled.

“Because I already knew you were Maya's father.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

She reached into the folder and removed a document.

It was an original laboratory report.

The date was several months before Maya's birth.

I read the first line.

*PARENTAL DNA COMPARISON — ARTHUR BENNETT.*

The report confirmed that the samples belonged to me and Nia.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Nia whispered, “Your father arranged it.””

I stared at the report.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because he knew Vanessa was spreading rumors about Marcus and me.””

I turned the page.

There was another note.

The biological father is confirmed as Arthur Bennett.

I looked at my wife.

“You knew all along?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me believe Marcus might be her father?””

“Because your father asked me to keep the original report hidden until the trust was secure.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

Nia opened the folder again.

Inside was a letter from my father.

Arthur,

I know what I have asked of Nia is unfair. I know the secrets will hurt you. But Vanessa has spent years trying to create a dispute over Maya's inheritance. She believes Marcus is the father and intends to use that claim to challenge the trust.

The truth is that Maya is your daughter. I arranged the test to make certain there could never be doubt.

I lowered the letter.

My father had known.

He had known everything.

And he had allowed me to spend years believing my brother might be the biological father of my child.

I looked at Nia.

“Why didn't you tell me when Marcus came back?””

She shook her head.

“I was afraid Vanessa would use the information to expose the other arrangements.””

“What arrangements?””

She hesitated.

Then she pointed toward the final page.

There was a document signed by my father and Richard Hale.

It was titled:

*PROTECTIVE BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then I reached the final section.

It stated that Maya's inheritance would remain protected even if her biological parentage was challenged.

But there was another condition.

If the original trust was proven fraudulent, ownership of the company would revert to its rightful beneficiaries.

I frowned.

“Who are the rightful beneficiaries?””

Nia looked at me.

“You and Marcus.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Your father divided the company equally between his two sons. Maya's trust only held the properties and investments.””

I looked at the document again.

Vanessa had spent years trying to steal something that wasn't hers.

She had manipulated Marcus.

She had forged my signature.

She had used my wife's fear.

And she had tried to turn Maya into a bargaining chip.

I felt exhausted.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Collins.

“Mr. Bennett, we've completed the preliminary review of the original records.””

“What did you find?””

“The signatures on the transfer documents were forged. The original ownership agreement remains valid.””

I looked at Marcus.

He had returned from the hospital and was standing in the kitchen doorway.

I put the call on speaker.

The detective continued.

“We also located a second set of financial records in the factory office. They show that Mr. Marcus Bennett transferred $85,000 into a private account three years ago.””

I looked at my brother.

He lowered his eyes.

“That's the money I borrowed from you,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Where did it go?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Into an account controlled by Dad's medical guardian.””

I looked at the detective.

“Who was the guardian?””

She answered.

“Vanessa.””

I turned toward Marcus.

“You told me it was for the investigation.””

“It was.””

“Then why didn't you explain?””

“Because the money disappeared. I thought I had failed Dad.””

I sat down.

“Why did you let me believe you stole it?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Vanessa threatened to expose the paternity agreement if I told you.””

I closed my eyes.

For three years, my brother had accepted my hatred because he believed it was safer than the truth.

It didn't make what he had done right.

But it made it understandable.

I looked at him.

“You should have trusted me.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

I stood.

Then I walked toward him.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Finally, I put my hand on his good shoulder.

“We're going to have a long conversation.””

Marcus gave a weak smile.

“I deserve that.””

I pulled him into a hug.

He began crying.

I did too.

The next morning, Detective Collins arrived with an update.

Vanessa had been formally charged with multiple counts involving fraud, forgery, unlawful confinement, and interference with financial records.

Richard Hale was also in custody.

Dr. Elaine Porter had been located at a private residence outside the city.

She had surrendered the original medical samples.

And our father was stable.

For the first time, I allowed myself to believe the worst was behind us.

Then the detective placed a small envelope on the table.

“This was found in the records office.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of my father, Marcus, and Vanessa standing together.

They looked younger.

Happy.

On the back was a date.

And beneath it, a handwritten sentence.

The person who started this was never Vanessa.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Detective Collins shook her head.

“We don't know yet.””

She handed me another page.

It contained a list of names.

At the top was my father's.

Below it was Marcus's.

Then mine.

And at the bottom was a fourth name.

*Lily Bennett.*

I frowned.

“Why is Lily on this list?””

The detective pointed to a note beside her name.

Original beneficiary of the secondary estate.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Secondary estate?””

She nodded.

“Your father established another trust. It was never included in the documents recovered from the factory.””

I looked at Marcus.

He seemed just as confused.

Then I turned toward Nia.

She was staring at the page.

Her face had gone completely white.

“Do you know something?””

Nia nodded slowly.

“Your father told me about it once.””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

She swallowed.

“He said there was one final inheritance. Something he wanted Lily to receive when she turned twenty-five.””

I stared at the name.

Lily.

My quiet, brilliant niece.

The girl who had grown up in our home without knowing who her mother was.

The girl Vanessa had tried to manipulate.

The girl who had stood beside Maya through everything.

I looked at the detective.

“Who controls the trust?””

She turned the page.

The answer was written beneath the beneficiary information.

*Trustee: Arthur Bennett.*

I stared at the document.

My father had left me responsible for Lily's inheritance.

And there was only one instruction.

Do not release the funds until the original beneficiary has been identified.

I looked at Nia.

“What does that mean?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Then my phone rang.

It was Lily.

I answered.

“Sweetheart?””

Her voice was unusually calm.

“Uncle Arthur, I need you to come upstairs.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I found something in Vanessa's old suitcase.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“There's a birth certificate with my name on it.””

I looked at the document in my hand.

“Lily, we already know Vanessa is your biological mother.””

“No, Uncle Arthur.””

Her voice trembled.

“This one says something different.””

I stood.

“What does it say?””

She took a breath.

May you like

“I'm not Vanessa's daughter.””

Then the call ended.
