Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Protect My Daughter

Detective Collins ordered everyone away from the windows.

“Stay inside,” she said.

“Nobody approaches that vehicle.””

Lily immediately closed the curtains.

Caleb pulled Maya away from the living room.

“Come on. Let's go upstairs.””

Maya shook her head.

“I'm not leaving Dad.””

I knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, I need you to listen to me. Whatever happens, nobody is taking you anywhere without your permission and mine.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Even Aunt Vanessa?””

I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

“Especially Aunt Vanessa.””

Detective Collins stepped onto the porch with another officer who had arrived moments earlier.

The SUV started moving.

It reversed out of our driveway and disappeared around the corner.

“Did you get the registration?”” I asked.

“Partially,” the second officer replied.

“We're checking nearby cameras.””

I turned toward Marcus.

“You said someone was watching the house.””

He nodded.

“Dad hired security after the first attempt to access the trust.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know who to trust.””

“You could have started with your brother.””

Marcus looked at me.

“I tried.””

I stared at him.

“When?””

“Three years ago. The night you threw me out.””

The memory returned.

It had been raining. Marcus stood outside my front door with a bleeding knuckle. I had just discovered the missing money.

He kept asking me to listen.

I refused.

Eventually, he walked away.

I had watched him disappear through the rain and felt relieved.

Now I wondered what he had been trying to tell me.

Detective Collins returned.

“We need to establish whether Vanessa has access to the trust.””

Nia spoke quietly.

“She does.””

“How?””

“Your father gave her temporary administrative authority.””

“Temporary?”” I repeated.

Nia nodded.

“Until Maya turned eighteen.””

I looked at my daughter.

Her eighteenth birthday was less than two years away.

“Why would he give Vanessa that much control?””

Nia hesitated.

“Because she was the only person he believed Marcus couldn't influence.””

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

“That was Dad's biggest mistake.””

I turned toward him.

“What do you mean?””

He walked to the kitchen counter and picked up the original trust agreement.

“Vanessa wasn't protecting Maya. She was protecting the money.””

He opened the folder to the final pages.

“Look at the authorization records.””

I examined the signatures.

There were dozens of transactions.

Small amounts at first.

Then larger withdrawals.

The dates went back almost six years.

I stared at the figures.

“She's been taking money?””

Marcus nodded.

“Not directly. She established management companies and used them to bill the trust for services that never happened.””

Detective Collins took the paperwork.

“Do you have evidence?””

Marcus reached into his briefcase.

“I have bank statements, company registrations, and recordings.””

He placed a small digital recorder on the table.

I looked at it.

“You've been investigating her?””

“For three years.””

“Why?””

“Because Dad asked me to.””

I shook my head.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No. I expect you to listen.””

Marcus pressed the button.

A woman's voice emerged.

Vanessa.

“The girl won't need that money for years. By then, the accounts will have been reorganized.””

A man's voice answered.

“What if Arthur finds out?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Arthur believes whatever makes him feel like the responsible son. Just remind him Marcus stole everything. He'll never look in the right direction.””

My chest tightened.

The recording continued.

“And the old man?””

Vanessa's voice became colder.

“He should have stayed dead.””

I slammed my hand onto the table.

“Where did you get this?””

Marcus stopped the recording.

“From a meeting she had with one of her business partners.””

“Who was the man?””

“Richard Hale.””

The attorney.

The same man whose name appeared on the forged signature.

Detective Collins took the recorder.

“This is significant. But we need to verify its authenticity and establish the context.””

Marcus nodded.

“I have the original files.””

I looked at Nia.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No. I knew Vanessa was handling some paperwork, but I didn't know she was taking money.””

“Yet you never told me about the trust.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

“Of what your father had done.””

I stared at her.

“What did he do?””

Nia sat down.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Then she opened the brown envelope.

The letter inside was yellowed at the edges.

She handed it to me.

I unfolded it.

My son Arthur,

If this letter reaches you, then I have failed to protect the family in the way I intended.

I continued reading.

I made two serious mistakes. The first was trusting Marcus with the company. The second was believing Vanessa could be trusted with the future of my granddaughter.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

But there is something you must know about Maya's birth.

I stopped.

Nia looked away.

I continued.

The child was not supposed to be born under the circumstances you were told.

I frowned.

What did that mean?

The letter continued.

There was an agreement between Nia and me. It was made before your marriage, before your relationship became serious, and before you knew the truth about the family trust.

I slowly lowered the page.

I looked at my wife.

“What agreement?””

Nia began crying.

“Arthur, I can explain.””

I held up the letter.

“Did my father pay you to marry me?””

The room became completely silent.

Nia covered her face.

Marcus looked down.

Even Detective Collins stopped writing.

My wife finally raised her head.

“No.””

“Then what agreement?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father asked me to have a child who would inherit the family assets.””

I couldn't move.

“What?””

“He knew you wanted children. He knew I wanted a family. He approached me with the trust arrangement before you and I got married.””

I stared at her.

“Are you telling me our marriage was arranged?””

“No. I loved you, Arthur. I still do.””

“But you had an agreement with my father?””

“Yes.””

“What was it?””

Nia looked at Maya.

“He wanted a child who would carry the Bennett name and inherit the company. He was afraid Marcus would destroy everything.””

I shook my head.

“That's not an explanation.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Your father also wanted the child to be raised away from the business. He believed that if you knew about the trust, you would become involved in the family conflict.””

I looked at the letter again.

“Why did you agree?””

“Because I was already in love with you.””

That answer hurt in a way I couldn't describe.

I wanted to believe her.

But every year of our marriage now seemed to have a hidden page.

Maya stepped forward.

“Mom, what does that mean?””

Nia rushed toward her.

“It means nothing about how much I love you.””

“Was I born because Grandpa wanted money?””

“No, sweetheart.””

“Was Dad part of the agreement?””

Nia began sobbing.

“No. Your father didn't know. But you were always wanted. You were never a transaction.””

Maya pulled away.

I felt my heart break watching my daughter struggle to understand whether her entire existence had been planned by people who treated her like an inheritance.

I turned toward Detective Collins.

“I want every document investigated. Every account. Every person involved.””

She nodded.

“We'll need statements from all of you.””

Then Marcus spoke.

“There's something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What now?””

He removed a final document from his briefcase.

It was a medical report.

The heading carried the name of a private rehabilitation facility.

I scanned the first paragraph.

My father's name.

His medical history.

Then a line near the bottom.

*Patient released into the care of Vanessa Bennett, October 28, 2026.*

I looked at the date.

Three days ago.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Arthur, Dad wasn't missing when Vanessa called you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He was released from the facility into her custody.””

Detective Collins stood immediately.

“Do you know where she took him?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. But I know why.””

He pointed to the last page.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the doctor's signature.

Patient repeatedly requested contact with grandson Arthur. Patient became distressed when informed that the family had been notified.

I looked at the date again.

October 28.

My father had been alive, nearby, and asking for me.

May you like

Someone had kept us apart.

And that someone was my sister.
