Chapter 13: The Two Girls Who Were Switched at Birth

I nearly dropped my phone.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The room around me disappeared. Mrs. Carter was still sitting at the table.

Nia had both hands pressed against her mouth. Marcus was staring at me.

But all I could hear was Lily's voice.

“Lily, listen to me. Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Is Vanessa with you?””

“Yes.””

“Put some distance between yourself and her.””

“I can't, Uncle Arthur.””

“Why not?””

Lily began crying.

“Because she says she's my mother.””

I closed my eyes.

“Sweetheart, I know what she's told you. Don't believe anything until we understand what's happening.””

Vanessa's voice suddenly came through the phone.

“Arthur, stop confusing her. She deserves to know the truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“Get away from my niece.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Your niece? That's an interesting choice of words.””

“I'm coming home.””

“Good. Bring Nia. She should hear this too.””

The call disconnected.

I looked at Detective Collins, who had arrived at Mrs. Carter's house after receiving our location.

“We need to go home.””

She immediately stood.

“Not without backup.””

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“I'm coming.””

I looked at him.

“Your shoulder—”

“I've spent years watching this family fall apart. I'm not sitting in a hospital while Vanessa destroys another life.””

Detective Collins arranged for two additional officers to accompany us.

During the drive, Nia sat beside me without speaking.

Finally, she whispered, “Arthur, what if it's true?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“What if the girls were switched?””

I shook my head.

“Vanessa has lied about everything. We need evidence.””

“But Lily has the same birthmark as the baby in that photograph.””

I remembered the small mark near Lily's left ear.

I had noticed it countless times.

It had never meant anything to me.

Now it felt like another piece of a puzzle nobody had allowed us to see.

Marcus turned from the passenger seat.

“There's something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Remember the hospital where Maya was born?””

“Of course.””

“Vanessa worked there temporarily.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

“She was employed in the administrative department. She had access to patient records.””

Nia began shaking her head.

“No.””

Marcus continued.

“Dad knew she had been involved in something involving two newborns. That's why he arranged the original trust.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know which babies were involved.””

I felt sick.

The idea that someone might have exchanged our children was almost impossible to comprehend.

And yet, after everything we had discovered, I couldn't dismiss it.

When we reached home, two police vehicles were already parked outside.

I rushed through the front door.

Vanessa stood in the living room.

Lily was beside the sofa, pale and trembling.

My daughter wasn't there.

“Where's Maya?”” I demanded.

Vanessa smiled.

“She's safe.””

“Where?””

“Your niece took her upstairs earlier.””

I turned toward the staircase.

“Lily, where is Maya?””

Lily looked at me.

“She's in my room. I asked her to stay there.””

I nodded.

Then I faced Vanessa.

“Leave.””

She folded her arms.

“Not until you hear me.””

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“Ms. Bennett, you need to cooperate.””

Vanessa ignored her.

She looked at Nia.

“Have you told Arthur about the hospital records?””

Nia's face went white.

“Stop.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You still think you can protect everyone by staying quiet?””

I stepped between them.

“Say what you came to say.””

Vanessa pulled a folded document from her handbag.

“This is a hospital transfer record from the night Maya was born.””

She placed it on the coffee table.

I picked it up.

Two babies had been admitted to the nursery that night.

One was registered as Maya Bennett.

The other was registered as Lily Carter.

I read the document carefully.

There was a handwritten note beside the second entry.

Identity verification pending.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does this mean?””

She smiled.

“It means one of those babies went home with the wrong family.””

Nia stepped forward.

“That's a lie.””

“Is it?””

Vanessa removed another document.

A laboratory report.

Two DNA profiles.

One belonged to Maya.

The other belonged to Lily.

But the report wasn't a simple sibling comparison.

It identified the biological relationship between Vanessa and the two girls.

Vanessa tapped the paper.

“Lily is my daughter. Maya isn't.””

I looked at her.

“Then who is Maya's biological mother?””

Vanessa turned toward Nia.

“Your wife.””

Nia stumbled backward.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Your daughter was switched with mine.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at Vanessa with an expression I had never seen before.

“Is that true?”” Lily whispered.

Vanessa approached her.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Lily stepped away.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to have a normal childhood.””

“You abandoned me!””

“I didn't abandon you. I gave you a better life.””

Lily shook her head.

“You gave me to Aunt Nia and Uncle Arthur without telling them?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“It was complicated.””

“No. It was cruel.””

Vanessa reached for her arm.

Lily pulled away.

Detective Collins moved between them.

“Do not touch her.””

I turned toward the DNA report.

Something wasn't right.

The document had no laboratory seal.

The signature at the bottom looked copied.

I handed it to the detective.

“Can you verify this?””

She examined it.

“This is not an official certified report.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Of course you'd say that.””

Detective Collins looked at the paper again.

“There's no laboratory reference number. The collection date is missing. This is not sufficient evidence of anything.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

I looked at her.

“You brought a fake DNA report into my home and expected us to believe you?””

She raised her chin.

“I brought the truth.””

“No. You brought another lie.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Then why do I have your birthmark?””

Vanessa turned.

“Because you're my daughter.””

“Why does Maya have it too?””

I froze.

Lily pointed toward the staircase.

Maya had appeared at the top.

She was holding the banister.

I looked at her.

“What did you say?””

Lily repeated herself.

“Both of us have the same mark. Maya has one behind her left ear too.””

Nia slowly turned toward our daughter.

I looked at Maya.

She touched the small area behind her ear.

“I've had it since I was born.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

Detective Collins noticed.

“Ms. Bennett, you will come with us.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You can't arrest me.””

“We have enough evidence to question you regarding the financial fraud and the unlawful confinement of Mr. Bennett.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You think you've won?””

I said nothing.

She turned toward Lily.

“You'll understand one day. Everything I did was for you.””

Lily wiped her tears.

“No, Mom. Everything you did was for yourself.””

The word Mom seemed to surprise Vanessa.

Then Lily continued.

“I don't care whose DNA I have. The people who raised me are my family.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

For a brief second, she looked like an ordinary woman who had just lost her daughter.

Then the expression vanished.

As the officers escorted her toward the door, she turned back.

“Arthur, there's one thing you still don't know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She smiled.

“Ask Nia why she never wanted a DNA test.””

I turned toward my wife.

Nia was crying.

And I knew immediately that there was still another secret.

That night, Detective Collins arranged independent DNA testing for Maya, Lily, Nia, Marcus, and me.

Nobody was allowed to interfere with the samples.

The results would take several hours.

At 11:42 p.m., the detective called.

“Mr. Bennett, the preliminary results are ready.””

My heart began pounding.

I looked at Nia.

She squeezed my hand.

The detective spoke slowly.

“The results establish that Lily is biologically related to Vanessa Bennett.””

I closed my eyes.

“Does that mean the babies were switched?””

There was a pause.

“No.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

“The results show that Maya is biologically related to Nia Bennett. However, neither girl's genetic profile matches the second child's record in the hospital transfer document.””

I frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Detective Collins lowered her voice.

“Mr. Bennett, we have evidence that the hospital records were altered before either child was discharged.””

I looked at Nia.

She had gone completely still.

Then the detective added:

“And there's something else. Maya's biological father is not Marcus.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Then who is it?””

The detective hesitated.

“That's what we are trying to establish.””

Then she said the one thing I never expected to hear.

“Mr. Bennett, your DNA comparison has produced a match.””

I gripped the phone.

“What kind of match?””

“A direct parent-child relationship.””

I looked at Maya standing in the doorway.

May you like

Then I heard the detective finish.

“Arthur, the results indicate that you are Maya's biological father.””
