Chapter 11: The Three People Who Lied at Sarah's Funeral

I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

Vanessa.

Richard Lawson.

Patricia.

All three standing outside the hospital on the night Sarah died.

My father had written the note on the back.

They were all there.

I remembered that night.

I remembered sitting beside Sarah's hospital bed.

I remembered the doctor telling me there was nothing more they could do.

I remembered Vanessa holding my shoulders while I cried.

But I didn't remember seeing Richard.

And I certainly didn't remember Patricia.

"Daniel," Rebecca whispered, "we need to take this to the police.""

I nodded.

Before I could move, another message arrived from Detective Harris.

Please come to the station. We have identified the woman in the photograph and need to discuss new evidence.

I arranged for Rebecca to stay with the children.

Then I drove to the station.

Detective Harris met me in a small conference room.

A folder sat on the table.

"Mr. Carter, we've been reviewing Sarah's medical records and the documents found in the storage device.""

He opened the folder.

"First, we confirmed that the prescription dosage was altered on two occasions.""

My jaw tightened.

"By Vanessa?""

"We haven't established who physically altered it. However, the hospital's medication log shows that someone requested an additional prescription under Sarah's name.""

"Who?""

He slid a document toward me.

The signature belonged to Richard Lawson.

I stared at it.

"Why would an attorney request medication?""

"That's exactly what we're investigating.""

He placed another page on the table.

"This is a visitor authorization signed by Sarah. It permitted Vanessa to collect certain medical information and coordinate medication deliveries.""

I frowned.

"Sarah trusted her.""

"Yes. But the authorization was later modified.""

"Modified how?""

"The original document permitted Vanessa to collect medication. The altered version also gave her authority to communicate with an outside pharmacy.""

I looked at the signature.

It appeared similar to Sarah's.

But something was wrong with it.

"Sarah didn't sign this.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"Our forensic examiner has reached the same preliminary conclusion.""

I leaned forward.

"Then who did?""

"We're still investigating.""

He opened another folder.

Inside were photographs of several prescription containers.

"These were recovered from a storage unit registered to Richard Lawson.""

One bottle had Sarah's name.

Another had a different label.

I read it twice.

The medication was not prescribed to Sarah.

"What's this?""

"An unidentified substance. We're waiting for laboratory results.""

I felt my hands go cold.

"Was it dangerous?""

"We can't answer that yet.""

He leaned back.

"There's something else. We found a financial connection between Richard Lawson and Vanessa.""

He placed a bank statement in front of me.

For several years, Vanessa had made regular transfers to an account controlled by a company owned by Lawson.

The payments increased significantly in the months following Sarah's death.

I stared at the numbers.

"She was paying him.""

"Yes.""

"For what?""

"We believe he helped her manipulate legal and financial documents.""

I thought about my father's estate.

The false signature.

The transfer to Caleb's trust.

The attempt to access Sarah's medical records.

"Did my father know?""

Detective Harris opened another file.

"Your father contacted our office eleven months ago.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"He requested information about a possible financial fraud involving your wife and Mr. Lawson.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Your father asked that the inquiry remain confidential.""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"Was he investigating Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

Detective Harris pushed a handwritten statement toward me.

It was my father's writing.

I made a mistake trusting Vanessa. I believed she was helping Daniel rebuild his life, but she has been using our family from the beginning.

I continued reading.

I confronted her about the money. She threatened to expose information about Sarah's illness and destroy Daniel's relationship with Maya.

The final paragraph was underlined.

If anything happens to me, do not assume it was natural.

I stopped.

"What?""

Detective Harris nodded.

"Your father's death certificate lists a heart attack. However, the circumstances surrounding his final week are now being reviewed.""

I stared at him.

"My father died at home.""

"Yes.""

"Was anyone with him?""

"Your wife.""

The room went silent.

I remembered Vanessa calling me that morning.

She had said my father was resting.

She had told me not to worry.

Then, two hours later, she called again.

Your father has passed away.

I had driven home immediately.

She'd been crying in the kitchen.

I'd held her.

I felt nauseated.

"Was she there when he died?""

"According to her statement, yes.""

I stood.

"I want every document.""

"We'll provide copies as the investigation progresses.""

I paced around the room.

"How many people knew?""

"We're still identifying everyone involved.""

I stopped.

"Did Patricia know?""

Detective Harris opened another page.

"Patricia Lawson received money from Vanessa's accounts. We have reason to believe she helped arrange the false medical authorization.""

I stared at the photograph again.

Three people.

Three people who had been present around the time Sarah died.

Three people who had lied to me.

Then the detective said something that made me stop breathing.

"We also found a handwritten note in your father's personal belongings.""

He slid it across the table.

It was addressed to me.

Daniel,

I need to tell you something about the night Sarah died.

I saw Vanessa leave the hospital room carrying a small bag. I asked what was inside. She told me it was Sarah's medication.

I believed her.

I should have stopped her.

I closed my eyes.

The next sentence was written more heavily.

But I heard Sarah calling for help after Vanessa left.

My chest tightened.

I looked up.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

Detective Harris answered quietly.

"Your father wrote that he was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

"According to the remaining notes, Vanessa had threatened to reveal a secret about your family.""

I stared at him.

"What secret?""

He opened the final page.

It contained a photocopy of an old birth certificate.

My father's name appeared in the section marked father.

But the child's name was not mine.

It was Richard Lawson.

I read it again.

Then I looked at the detective.

"You're telling me Richard Lawson was my father's son?""

"That's what the document indicates.""

I sat down.

Richard wasn't simply an attorney who had helped Vanessa.

He was my half-brother.

The man who had witnessed the financial transfers.

The man who had requested Sarah's medical records.

The man whose name appeared in the recording and the suspicious bank statements.

And my father had known.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

Detective Harris looked down.

"Perhaps he was trying to protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.""

I picked up the birth certificate.

"Meanwhile, my daughter was being hurt in my own house.""

The detective didn't answer.

My phone rang.

It was Rebecca.

"Daniel, you need to come home.""

"What happened?""

"Maya wants to talk to you.""

"Is she okay?""

"She's safe. But someone called the house.""

"Who?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Vanessa.""

I stood.

"What did she say?""

"She asked to speak to Maya.""

"Did you let her?""

"Of course not.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"Put Maya on the phone.""

A moment later, I heard my daughter's voice.

"Daddy?""

"I'm here, sweetheart.""

"Mrs. Vanessa called.""

I closed my eyes.

"What did she say?""

Maya was quiet.

Then she whispered:

"She said she wants to tell me what happened to Mommy.""

My blood ran cold.

"Did she say anything else?""

Maya began crying.

"She said Mommy wasn't supposed to die.""

I stopped walking.

Rebecca's voice came faintly through the phone.

"Daniel?""

I couldn't answer.

Maya continued.

"She said if I tell the police what I saw, Daddy will find out who really hurt Mommy.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Sweetheart, listen to me. You don't have to talk to her. You don't have to do anything she asks.""

"But Daddy?""

"Yes?""

"Mrs. Vanessa said Mommy was awake when she left the hospital room.""

I gripped the phone.

"What?""

Maya began sobbing.

"She said Mommy called for me.""

I closed my eyes.

May you like

Then Maya whispered something that changed everything.

"She said Mommy was trying to give me something before she died.""
