Chapter 8: Sarah's Sister Knew the Truth

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Margaret stood in the doorway wearing a dark blue coat.

Her hair had turned almost completely gray, and there were deep lines around her eyes.

But I recognized her immediately.

Sarah's older sister had been absent from our lives since the funeral.

She hadn't attended Maya's birthday parties.

She hadn't called on Christmas.

She hadn't answered my messages.

I'd assumed grief had made her withdraw.

Now she was standing in my house, telling me that my wife's death wasn't what I'd believed.

"Margaret?""

She nodded.

"Hello, Daniel.""

I stared at her.

"Where have you been?""

She looked at the envelope in my hand.

"Trying to stay away from Vanessa.""

I felt a chill.

"Why?""

"Because she threatened me.""

I glanced at Eleanor.

She was standing behind me, trembling.

Margaret stepped inside and closed the door.

"Did you find the package?""

I held it up.

"Yes.""

She closed her eyes.

"Then you finally know.""

"Know what?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Sarah was afraid someone was interfering with her medication.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath me.

"What?""

"During the last six weeks of her life, she became unusually weak. She was dizzy, confused, and sometimes couldn't remember conversations.""

I shook my head.

"Her doctors said her illness was progressing.""

"That's what Vanessa wanted everyone to believe.""

My throat tightened.

"Margaret, be careful.""

"I'm being careful. I've spent four years wishing I had spoken sooner.""

I placed the envelope on the cabinet.

"Tell me everything.""

Margaret took a breath.

"Sarah called me shortly before she died. She said she believed someone was changing her medication.""

I remembered those weeks.

Sarah had complained about feeling exhausted.

She had sometimes struggled to finish sentences.

I had blamed the illness.

I had taken her to appointments.

I had trusted the doctors.

And Vanessa had always been there, offering to help.

"Did she say who?""

Margaret looked at me.

"She suspected Vanessa.""

I gripped the edge of the cabinet.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried.""

"When?""

"At the hospital. The night Sarah died.""

I stared at her.

Margaret continued.

"You were in the hallway speaking to the doctor. Vanessa came into Sarah's room. When I followed her, she told me Sarah had asked her to handle the family affairs.""

"That's not true.""

"I know.""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"She told me that if I accused her of anything, she'd make sure Maya was taken away from you.""

I stepped back.

"How could she do that?""

"She said she had evidence that Sarah had been mentally unstable and that you were incapable of caring for a child while grieving.""

I remembered the custody paperwork Vanessa had encouraged me to sign shortly after Sarah's death.

She had told me it was a standard document authorizing her to handle school and medical matters for Maya.

I'd signed without reading every page.

My stomach turned.

"Did I give her legal authority over Maya?""

Margaret nodded.

"Temporarily. But Sarah had already arranged something else.""

She pointed toward the envelope.

"Read the second page.""

I opened the document.

It was a notarized statement.

Sarah had named Margaret as an emergency guardian if anything happened to me.

She had also included instructions regarding Maya's inheritance.

There was a handwritten note attached.

No one should ever be allowed to separate Daniel and Maya through threats, false medical claims, or financial pressure.

I sat down.

Sarah had been preparing for something.

But I still didn't know what had happened to her medication.

Margaret reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed Sarah in a hospital bed.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

On the back was a date.

The date was two days before Sarah died.

"Where did you get this?""

"Sarah sent it to me.""

I examined the photograph.

Sarah looked pale.

Vanessa was holding a small medication bottle.

I recognized the label.

It was the medication Sarah had been prescribed.

Margaret pointed to the bottle.

"Look at the dosage.""

I leaned closer.

The printed dosage was different from what I remembered.

"That's not what she was supposed to take.""

"Exactly.""

My hands began shaking.

"Did you report this?""

"I tried. But Vanessa told everyone I was unstable and grieving. She said I was imagining things.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"Did you ever see Vanessa handling Sarah's medication?""

Eleanor hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Several times.""

I turned.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Mrs. Sarah asked me not to confront her. She said she was gathering evidence.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Sarah was too sick by then.""

I looked at the flash drive.

"What's on this?""

Margaret's face tightened.

"Recordings. Sarah made them before she died.""

I inserted the drive into my laptop.

There were three audio files.

The first contained Sarah speaking to someone.

The second was a conversation with Vanessa.

The third was labeled:

*LAST NIGHT — DO NOT DELETE.*

I clicked the second file.

Sarah's voice came through.

"Vanessa, I know you changed the dosage.""

Vanessa answered immediately.

"You're confused.""

"No. I checked the prescription.""

"You're making yourself worse by worrying.""

"Give me my medication.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"You're not going to live long enough to make a difference anyway.""

I stopped the recording.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Eleanor began sobbing.

I stared at the laptop.

"Was that real?""

Margaret nodded.

"Sarah sent me the recording before she died.""

I opened the final file.

There was static.

Then Sarah's voice.

"Daniel, if you ever hear this, please don't blame yourself.""

My eyes filled immediately.

"I know you've done everything you can. I know you love me. But there's something I couldn't tell you because I was afraid Vanessa would hurt Maya.""

A pause.

Then:

"She has been asking questions about the inheritance. She wants access to the trust. And I think she's planning to use my death to get closer to you.""

My chest tightened.

Sarah continued.

"If Vanessa becomes part of your life, please don't let her control Maya's money. Please don't let her convince you that Maya is not your daughter.""

I covered my mouth.

Then came the final sentence.

"Daniel, I think she has already chosen someone to help her.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Margaret whispered, "There was another person.""

I looked up.

"Who?""

She shook her head.

"Sarah never told me the name.""

I looked toward the storage room door.

Caleb was standing in the hallway.

He had heard everything.

His eyes were wet.

"Daniel?""

I stood.

"Hey, buddy.""

He looked at Margaret.

Then at the photograph of Sarah.

"Is that the lady in my mom's old pictures?""

I nodded.

"That's Sarah. She was Maya's mother.""

Caleb looked down.

"Mom used to talk about her.""

"What did she say?""

He hesitated.

"She said Sarah was the reason she couldn't have the life she deserved.""

My jaw tightened.

"What else?""

Caleb looked frightened.

"She said she would have been rich if Sarah hadn't died first.""

Margaret gasped.

I knelt in front of him.

"Caleb, where did you hear that?""

"In the car.""

"When?""

"Last week. Mom was talking to someone on the phone.""

I swallowed.

"Did she mention a name?""

Caleb nodded.

"She called him Mr. Miller.""

I froze.

"Which Mr. Miller?""

"She said he was going to help her fix the papers before Daddy found out.""

My phone rang.

It was Mr. Miller himself.

I answered immediately.

"Daniel, we have a problem.""

"What happened?""

"Someone accessed Sarah's original medical file this morning.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"The request came through a legal office.""

"Whose office?""

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Your wife's former attorney.""

I looked at Margaret.

She had gone pale.

"Daniel," she whispered, "that's impossible.""

I covered the phone.

"What?""

Margaret stared at me.

"Sarah fired that attorney four years ago.""

I turned back to the call.

"Mr. Miller, send me the name of the person who requested the records.""

A message arrived seconds later.

I opened it.

The name appeared on the screen.

*Vanessa Carter.*

But underneath her signature was another authorization.

May you like

One that belonged to a person I had never expected to see connected to Sarah's death.

My own father.
