Chapter 9: The Signature That Destroyed Everything

I read the authorization again.

Then I enlarged the document.

The signature was unmistakable.

Arthur Carter.

My father.

He had been dead for eleven months.

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

"Mr. Miller, are you certain this is the document you received?""

"Yes. It was submitted electronically this morning.""

"That's impossible. My father died last year.""

The attorney went silent.

"Daniel, I wasn't aware of that.""

"Who submitted it?""

"The request came from a legal assistant at a private firm. The authorization includes your father's signature.""

"Send me the original file.""

"I will.""

I ended the call.

Margaret was watching me.

"What's wrong?""

I handed her the phone.

She read the document.

Then she looked up.

"Arthur?""

I nodded.

"Did your father know Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

"How well?""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Well enough to attend our family dinners. He liked her.""

Margaret looked troubled.

"Did he ever visit Sarah in the hospital?""

I thought back.

"Once or twice.""

"Did he have access to her medical records?""

I shook my head.

"Not officially.""

Margaret pointed to the document.

"Then why would his signature be here?""

I had no answer.

I called Rebecca and asked her to come over.

When she arrived, I showed her the authorization.

She stared at it.

"Daniel, that's Dad's signature.""

"I know.""

"But he's been dead for almost a year.""

"Someone is using his identity.""

Rebecca sat down.

"Could Vanessa have forged it?""

"Possibly.""

Margaret shook her head.

"There's another possibility.""

We all looked at her.

She hesitated.

"Your father and Sarah had a disagreement shortly before Sarah died.""

I frowned.

"About what?""

"Sarah called me. She said Arthur had been asking questions about the trust.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What questions?""

"Whether the money could be redirected if Maya became legally dependent on another guardian.""

I stared at her.

"My father was asking about Maya's inheritance?""

"Yes.""

I shook my head.

"Why would he care?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Because Vanessa told him Sarah had hidden money that should have belonged to the entire family.""

I stood.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Daniel, Dad was very close to Vanessa after Sarah died.""

I remembered.

My father had encouraged me to marry again.

He'd told me I needed someone to help raise Maya.

He'd praised Vanessa constantly.

At the time, I thought he was simply happy to see me moving forward.

Now those memories felt different.

"Did he know she was mistreating Maya?"" I asked.

Rebecca looked away.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

She swallowed.

"Last Christmas, I saw Dad give Vanessa an envelope.""

"What was inside?""

"I don't know. But I asked him about it. He told me to mind my own business.""

I sat down.

The house suddenly felt too small.

I had spent years believing Sarah's death had been a tragedy no one could have prevented.

Now I was discovering that people I had trusted might have known more than they admitted.

My phone buzzed.

An email from Mr. Miller.

Attached was the original authorization.

There was a second document beneath it.

A bank transfer.

The money had been moved from an account belonging to a company called Carter Family Holdings.

I recognized the company.

My father had established it years earlier to manage several rental properties.

I opened the document.

The transfer had occurred three weeks before his death.

The recipient account belonged to a private trust.

The beneficiary's name was listed as:

*Caleb Reed.*

I stared at the screen.

"Caleb?""

Rebecca leaned over.

"That's your stepson.""

I nodded slowly.

The account contained $180,000.

Money that had originated from my father's estate.

I looked at Margaret.

"Did Sarah know about this?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Then Rebecca pointed to the bottom of the document.

"Daniel, look.""

There was a reference number.

It matched the number on the old medical authorization.

I felt my throat tighten.

"Someone connected the medical records to the financial transfers.""

Margaret stood.

"Then Vanessa wasn't just trying to steal Maya's inheritance.""

I looked at her.

"She was trying to make sure Caleb received something too.""

Rebecca nodded.

"And she had help.""

A small voice came from the doorway.

"Is this about me?""

Caleb stood there.

He was holding a glass of water.

His face was pale.

I quickly closed the laptop.

"No, buddy.""

He looked at the papers.

"Is someone stealing my money?""

I hesitated.

Then I crouched.

"Caleb, listen. You don't need to worry about money right now.""

"But Mom said we were going to have a big house and lots of money.""

I looked at him.

"When did she say that?""

"Last week.""

"Did she say where the money would come from?""

He nodded.

"She said when Maya went away, everything would be easier.""

My chest tightened.

"Where would Maya go?""

Caleb looked confused.

"Mom said she would live with Aunt Rebecca. Or maybe somewhere else.""

Rebecca covered her mouth.

I held Caleb's shoulders.

"Did your mom ever tell you to keep secrets from Maya?""

He nodded.

"She said Maya couldn't know about the papers.""

"What papers?""

"The ones in her bedroom.""

I turned toward the stairs.

"Which papers?""

Caleb pointed upstairs.

"In the closet. Behind the blue suitcase.""

I stood immediately.

Rebecca stayed with the children while Margaret followed me upstairs.

We entered Vanessa's bedroom.

The room still smelled of her perfume.

I opened the closet.

A large blue suitcase sat on the top shelf.

I pulled it down and placed it on the bed.

Inside were several folders, envelopes, and a small notebook.

The first folder contained copies of Maya's birth certificate, medical records, and school documents.

The second contained financial statements.

The third was labeled:

*GUARDIANSHIP PLAN.*

I opened it.

There were legal forms seeking temporary guardianship of Maya.

The proposed guardian was listed as Vanessa.

The stated reason was that I was allegedly unable to provide appropriate care because of frequent business travel.

I read the date.

The documents had been prepared six months earlier.

I felt sick.

Vanessa had been planning to remove Maya from my care long before the birthday incident.

I turned another page.

There was a proposed custody agreement.

It stated that Maya would reside primarily with Vanessa while I continued paying all educational and medical expenses.

The document had already been signed by a witness.

I looked at the name.

Eleanor Brooks.

I froze.

Eleanor had told me she was afraid.

But she had signed something that could have separated me from my daughter.

I turned toward Margaret.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

I opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten dates, names, and short financial calculations.

One entry was circled.

*November 12 — Final transfer.*

Another line appeared beneath it.

*After Daniel signs, Maya goes to Rebecca.*

I checked the date.

November 12 was less than a week away.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Detective Harris.

"Mr. Carter, where are you?""

"At home. Why?""

"We've located Mrs. Brooks.""

"Where?""

"At a private medical facility outside the city.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"She has been attempting to access records belonging to your late wife.""

I looked at the notebook.

"Is she alone?""

"No.""

"Who is with her?""

There was a pause.

Then he said:

"Your father's former personal attorney.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What's his name?""

"Richard Lawson.""

I recognized the name immediately.

Richard Lawson had handled my father's estate.

He had also been the attorney who witnessed the documents transferring money to Caleb's trust.

But the detective wasn't finished.

"There's something else, Mr. Carter. We found a recorded statement on Mrs. Brooks's phone.""

"What statement?""

"It appears to have been recorded yesterday.""

"Who is speaking?""

The detective hesitated.

Then he said:

"Your father.""

I couldn't move.

"That's impossible.""

"We know your father is deceased. But the recording appears authentic.""

"Play it.""

The detective paused.

Then he sent me an audio file.

I pressed play.

My father's voice filled the bedroom.

"Daniel, if you're hearing this, then Vanessa has probably done what I was afraid she would do.""

My hands began shaking.

"She told me Sarah was hiding something from you. I believed her at first.""

There was a pause.

Then my father continued.

"But after Sarah died, I discovered the truth. Vanessa had been using our family for years.""

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"She didn't just want the money, Daniel. She wanted control of the children.""

The recording crackled.

Then came the sentence that made my blood turn cold.

"And the reason she wanted Maya removed from your house was not because she hated Sarah.""

A pause.

"It was because Maya witnessed something the night Sarah died.""

I stopped breathing.

I looked toward the hallway.

Maya was downstairs.

Eight years old.

The little girl who had been too frightened to ask for food.

The little girl who had been told her father had forgotten her birthday.

The little girl who had spent years believing she was unwanted.

I pressed the phone against my ear.

My father's voice returned.

May you like

"Daniel, ask Maya what she remembers about the night her mother died.""

And then the recording ended.
