Chapter 6: What Sarah Hid Before She Died

I didn't sleep that night.

Maya slept beside Rebecca in the guest bedroom, holding the stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Caleb stayed in his room.

Every few minutes, I heard him moving around upstairs.

I couldn't blame him.

His entire understanding of his family had collapsed in a single evening.

At two in the morning, I found him sitting on the floor outside his bedroom.

His birthday crown lay beside him.

"Can't sleep?"" I asked.

He shook his head.

I sat beside him.

"Me neither.""

He picked at a loose thread on his pajama sleeve.

"Is Mom going to jail?""

I took a breath.

"I don't know what will happen. The police need to investigate.""

"Did she really make Maya eat garbage?""

I looked at him.

He swallowed.

"I heard her say it.""

I nodded.

"She did something very wrong.""

Caleb stared at the carpet.

"I knew Maya wasn't allowed to eat our party food.""

I didn't speak.

"Mom said it was because Maya was jealous of me.""

His voice cracked.

"Sometimes I gave Maya my snacks when Mom wasn't looking.""

My chest tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He wiped his nose.

"Mom said if I told you, you'd send me to live with Michael.""

I closed my eyes.

Another child had been manipulated into silence.

I put my hand on his shoulder.

"Listen to me. You are not responsible for what your mother did. And you should never have been made to feel afraid of losing your family because you shared food with your sister.""

Caleb began crying.

"Is Maya mad at me?""

"No.""

"She should be.""

"Why?""

"Because I had all the cake.""

I looked at him.

"Caleb, you didn't take the food out of her hands. The adults made those decisions.""

He nodded, but he didn't look convinced.

I stayed with him until he finally went to bed.

Then I went downstairs and placed Sarah's silver key on the kitchen counter.

The next morning, I drove to the bank.

The safe-deposit box was registered under Sarah's name, with me listed as the authorized person to access it after her death.

The bank manager checked my identification.

"Mr. Carter, this box hasn't been opened in almost five years.""

"I know.""

She led me into a private room.

I inserted the key.

Inside were several folders, a small flash drive, a photograph, and a sealed envelope.

The photograph showed Sarah sitting at our old dining table.

She was holding a document and smiling.

On the back, she had written:

For Daniel, when the time is right.

I opened the envelope.

My love,

If you've reached this point, then something happened that I hoped we would never have to face.

I know you loved Vanessa as a friend. I also know she was there for me during some difficult moments.

But I discovered that she was not the person I believed her to be.

I stopped.

Sarah continued.

Several months before Maya was born, Vanessa approached me about an investment opportunity. She claimed she had access to a private property development fund.

I trusted her because she had been my friend for years.

I gave her a portion of my inheritance to invest.

She never returned it.

My hands tightened around the letter.

The next paragraph was worse.

When I confronted her, she threatened to tell you that I had been unfaithful. She had discovered private medical records and knew you would be devastated if you believed there was any question about Maya's parentage.

I refused to let her use my daughter as a weapon.

I lowered the letter.

Vanessa hadn't simply entered our lives after Sarah's death.

She had been involved in Sarah's life before that.

I opened the first folder.

Inside were bank statements showing several transfers from Sarah's inheritance to an investment account.

The money had gone missing.

The second folder contained printed messages between Sarah and Vanessa.

I read them slowly.

One message from Vanessa stood out.

You don't have to tell Daniel everything. He already trusts you. Just sign the papers, and we can both benefit.

Sarah had replied:

I will not put my daughter's future at risk.

Then Vanessa:

You should think carefully about what happens if Daniel learns the truth about your medical treatment.

My blood ran cold.

There was no affair.

No secret biological father.

No reason to doubt Maya's parentage.

It had all been a lie Vanessa had used to frighten Sarah.

I opened the third folder.

It contained a document titled:

*Declaration of Financial Misconduct and Threats.*

Sarah had recorded dates, amounts, and details of conversations.

At the bottom was the name of an attorney.

I recognized it.

Mr. Miller.

I immediately called him.

"Daniel," he answered.

"I was expecting your call.""

"I found the safe-deposit box.""

"Then you've seen the documents?""

"Some of them. Sarah said Vanessa threatened her.""

There was a pause.

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Your wife specifically instructed me not to disclose the contents unless certain conditions were met.""

"What conditions?""

"An attempted transfer of Maya's trust, or evidence that someone was deliberately trying to separate you from your daughter.""

I sat down.

"Both have happened.""

"I know. That's why I released the additional records.""

I looked at the flash drive.

"What's on this?""

"Audio recordings and copies of communications Sarah preserved.""

"Did Vanessa know about them?""

"She knew Sarah had collected evidence. She didn't know where it was stored.""

I inserted the flash drive into my laptop.

There were several audio files.

I opened the first.

Sarah's voice filled the small room.

"Vanessa, I want my money returned.""

A second voice answered.

Vanessa.

"You're making this bigger than it needs to be.""

"That's my daughter's inheritance.""

"You have more than enough.""

"That's not the point.""

Then came a sound I recognized.

A glass being placed on a table.

Vanessa spoke again.

"If you tell Daniel what happened, I'll tell him about Michael.""

Sarah's voice became sharper.

"Michael has nothing to do with Maya.""

"Are you sure he'll believe that?""

I stopped the recording.

My stomach was turning.

I opened the second file.

This one was dated several months later.

Vanessa's voice was unmistakable.

"You think Daniel will choose you over me?""

Sarah answered quietly.

"He's Maya's father. He'll always choose his daughter.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Not if he thinks she's someone else's child.""

Then the recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Sarah had known.

She had known Vanessa might someday use that lie against me.

And she had prepared for it.

I called Rebecca.

"Becca, I need you to listen to something.""

She arrived at the bank an hour later.

After hearing the recordings, she covered her mouth.

"That woman was planning this before Sarah died.""

"Yes.""

Rebecca looked at the documents.

"Daniel, we need to get all of this to the police.""

"I will.""

"And Maya?""

I looked at her.

"She's never going near Vanessa again.""

Rebecca nodded.

Then she hesitated.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Last night, after you went to bed, Maya told me something.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?""

Rebecca lowered her voice.

"She said Vanessa used to make her stand outside your office whenever you were home.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She told Maya that if you ever found out what was happening, she would make sure you believed Maya was lying.""

I felt sick.

"How long?""

"She couldn't tell me exactly.""

Rebecca reached into her purse.

"She also gave me this.""

She handed me a small folded paper.

It was a drawing.

Maya had drawn our family.

There were four people in the picture.

Me.

Maya.

Caleb.

And Vanessa.

But Vanessa had been drawn on the far side of the page, separated from everyone by a thick black line.

Above the picture, Maya had written:

This is my family when Daddy is home.

I stared at the drawing.

Then Rebecca pointed toward the bottom.

There was another sentence, written in small, uneven letters.

When Daddy goes away, Mommy says I don't belong.

I couldn't breathe.

I folded the paper carefully and put it inside my jacket.

Then my phone rang.

It was the detective handling the case.

"Mr. Carter, we need you to come to the station.""

"Why?""

"We've reviewed the financial documents you provided.""

"And?""

He hesitated.

"There's evidence that your wife wasn't acting alone.""

I looked at Rebecca.

"Who else was involved?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"Someone with access to your household finances. Someone who appears to have helped move money out of the accounts without your knowledge.""

My mind raced through everyone who had access.

Vanessa.

Michael.

Our accountant.

Then the detective said a name.

"Your household assistant, Mrs. Eleanor Brooks.""

I went still.

Eleanor had worked for our family for nearly seven years.

She had helped care for Maya when Sarah was sick.

She had attended Maya's birthday parties.

She had been the person I trusted to look after the house whenever I traveled.

I remembered seeing her in the kitchen two days before leaving for my last business trip.

She had been holding a stack of envelopes.

I had assumed they were bills.

"Are you certain?"" I asked.

"We have a bank transfer bearing her authorization.""

I closed my eyes.

The detective continued.

"There's another detail. According to the transaction records, Mrs. Brooks transferred money to an account belonging to someone named Sarah Carter.""

My heart stopped.

"Sarah is dead.""

"That's what we need to establish, Mr. Carter.""

I stared at the silver key on the table.

Then the detective added:

May you like

"The account was opened six months ago.""

And for the first time since discovering Maya beside the trash can, I wondered whether the people who had hurt my daughter were the only ones hiding something in my home.
