Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The doorbell rang again.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stood beside the coffee table, her fingers gripping the edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

I looked at her.

"Who is it?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Then why did you say Michael's name?""

"I didn't.""

"You just did.""

Before she could answer, Rebecca stepped away from the staircase.

"Daniel, don't open that door until we know what's happening.""

I looked toward Maya.

She was still standing upstairs, hugging her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

"Sweetheart, go into Aunt Rebecca's room.""

"But, Daddy—"

"Please. I'll come get you.""

Rebecca guided her away.

I walked toward the front door.

The bell rang a third time.

I looked through the small glass panel.

A man stood on the porch.

He was in his early forties, wearing a dark gray coat. His hair was shorter than I remembered, and there was a scar running from his left eyebrow toward his temple.

But I recognized him immediately.

Michael Reed.

The man I had attended a funeral for six years earlier.

The man whose photograph had appeared in the local newspaper after a terrible highway accident.

The man Vanessa had just claimed was dead.

I unlocked the door.

"Michael?""

He looked at me.

"Hello, Daniel.""

I couldn't speak.

He glanced past my shoulder and spotted Vanessa.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then he said quietly, "I see you've finally found out.""

I grabbed his coat.

"What the hell is going on?""

He didn't resist.

"I deserve that.""

"You're supposed to be dead!""

Michael glanced toward the street.

"Can we talk somewhere private?""

"No.""

I pulled him inside.

"You can explain everything right here.""

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the stairs.

Michael noticed.

"Still running away when things get difficult, Vanessa?""

She stopped.

"Shut up.""

He gave a humorless smile.

"Some things never change.""

I stepped between them.

"Both of you. Start talking.""

Michael removed his coat and placed it over a chair.

"I was never in that accident.""

I stared at him.

"Then who was?""

He looked down.

"A man named Peter Collins. He worked for a transportation company. He had a similar vehicle, and the police identified the remains using documents that Vanessa arranged.""

Vanessa exploded.

"That's a lie!""

Michael turned toward her.

"You want to tell him what happened to the insurance money?""

Her face drained of color.

I looked between them.

"What insurance money?""

Michael exhaled.

"Vanessa took out a life insurance policy in my name. She was listed as the beneficiary. When the accident happened, she collected the payout.""

My stomach turned.

"How much?""

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You collected life insurance money for a man who wasn't dead?""

She raised her chin.

"You don't understand the circumstances.""

"Then explain them.""

She said nothing.

Michael continued.

"Vanessa needed money. She had debts. I helped her arrange the identity change because I was trying to get away from a situation that had become dangerous.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You faked your death to escape your own problems?""

"Yes.""

"And then you came back?""

"I came back because I heard Vanessa was married to you.""

I stared at him.

"Why would that concern you?""

His expression changed.

"Because I knew about Sarah's trust.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"How?""

"Vanessa told me.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Michael, stop talking.""

He ignored her.

"Sarah had left money for Maya. Vanessa believed she could get access to it through you. When she couldn't, she started looking for another way.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

The half-eaten dinner roll was still on the counter.

"Did you know she was starving my daughter?""

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"I knew Vanessa had a problem with Maya.""

"That wasn't my question.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know about the food.""

"Did you know she was telling Maya that I had forgotten her birthday?""

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

Something inside me snapped.

I grabbed his coat and threw it onto the floor.

"Get out.""

"Daniel, listen—"

"Get out of my house!""

Michael didn't move.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and removed a small envelope.

"I brought something for you.""

I didn't take it.

He placed it on the coffee table.

"Sarah left this with me before she died.""

My breathing became shallow.

"Why would Sarah leave anything with you?""

"Because she discovered what Vanessa was planning.""

Vanessa rushed toward the envelope.

I blocked her.

"Don't.""

Michael opened it himself.

Inside was a photograph of Sarah holding newborn Maya.

There was also a hospital document.

He slid it across the table.

"Read the last paragraph.""

I picked it up.

It was a copy of a genetic testing report.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

*Biological Father: Daniel Carter.*

I looked up.

"What is this?""

Michael's voice was quiet.

"Sarah wanted to prove that Vanessa was lying.""

I stared at the report.

"Why would Vanessa tell me Maya wasn't mine?""

Michael looked at her.

"Because she wanted you to reject your daughter.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Michael continued.

"She thought if you believed Maya was another man's child, you'd stop protecting her. Then she could get control of the house, the trust, and eventually everything you own.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Is that why you made her believe I didn't love her?""

She began crying.

"Daniel, I was overwhelmed.""

"Is that why you took her birthday card?""

"I didn't want her to become spoiled.""

"Is that why you made her eat from the trash?""

"She was being difficult!""

The words came out so quickly that even Michael looked disgusted.

I took one step toward her.

"She is eight years old.""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"You're acting like I abused her!""

Rebecca appeared at the staircase.

"Daniel, the police are here.""

Two officers entered the house.

I explained what had happened, showed them the birthday card, the food container, and the medical report.

One officer asked Vanessa to step into the living room.

The other requested that Michael remain where he was.

As they began asking questions, Michael suddenly looked toward the hallway.

"There's one more thing Daniel needs to know.""

I turned.

"What?""

Michael looked at Vanessa.

"Tell him why Caleb has been calling you Mom's real son.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And then Michael said the words that made my entire world collapse.

"Because Caleb isn't Vanessa's biological son either.""

The officer stopped writing.

I stared at him.

"What?""

Michael pulled another photograph from his wallet.

It showed a younger woman holding a baby.

On the back, someone had written:

Caleb Reed. Born October 14.

I looked at the date.

Then at Michael.

"What does this have to do with you?""

Michael swallowed.

"Everything.""

He pointed toward the stairs.

"Because Caleb is my biological son.""

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to keep Maya away from the birthday party.

May you like

She hadn't simply been celebrating her son's birthday.

She had been celebrating the child she had secretly brought into my family.
