Chapter 5: The Boy Who Didn't Know His Own Story
The officers separated everyone.
Vanessa sat at the dining table, answering questions in a voice that had become strangely calm.
Michael remained in the living room.
Rebecca stayed upstairs with Maya.
And I stood beside the kitchen counter, staring at a photograph of a baby I had once believed was simply my wife's son.
Caleb.
My stepson.
The boy whose school tuition I had paid.
The boy I'd taught to ride a bicycle.
The boy I'd carried on my shoulders at the county fair.
The boy whose birthday party had filled my living room while my own daughter searched the trash.
I looked at Michael.
"How long have you known?""
"Since he was born.""
"Does Caleb know?""
"No.""
"Does Vanessa know?""
Michael nodded.
"Of course.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Then explain why he's living here.""
Michael glanced toward the dining room.
"Vanessa and I were together before she married you. We had Caleb, but our relationship fell apart. She wanted stability. I wanted a different life.""
"So you abandoned your son?""
"I paid child support for a while.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He looked away.
"Yes.""
I laughed without humor.
"You two are unbelievable.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Daniel, I know how this sounds.""
"You think?""
"I never wanted Caleb to grow up without a father.""
"Then why didn't you raise him?""
"Because Vanessa told me you were willing to.""
I stared at him.
"She told you I agreed to raise your son?""
"She said you knew everything.""
I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.
"She lied.""
Michael looked genuinely surprised.
"She told me you knew Caleb was mine.""
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was sitting at the table, her eyes fixed on her hands.
"Did you know?"" I asked her.
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
Finally, she whispered, "I knew Michael was his father.""
"And you let me believe he was mine?""
"You loved him.""
I stared at her.
"That was your justification?""
"You treated him like your own son. You paid for everything. You never made him feel different.""
I looked at the birthday decorations.
The blue cake.
The presents.
The photographs of Caleb smiling beside me.
"And Maya?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"What about her?""
"You made sure she felt different.""
She crossed her arms.
"She had everything. Her own bedroom, her father's attention, expensive clothes. Caleb had to share.""
I looked at her in disbelief.
"He had an entire birthday party while she was eating from the trash.""
"Because she was difficult!""
I slammed my palm against the table.
"Stop saying that!""
The officer nearest us raised his head.
I lowered my voice.
"You're going to explain exactly what happened to my daughter.""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
For a moment, her expression softened.
Then she spoke.
"Maya always reminded me of Sarah.""
I waited.
"She had her eyes. Her voice. Even the way she walked. Every time I looked at her, I remembered that you had loved another woman before me.""
I stared at her.
"So you punished a child for reminding you of her mother?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"I never intended for it to become this bad.""
"How long?""
She looked down.
"Daniel, please.""
"How long have you been withholding food?""
"Not every day.""
That answer was worse than a confession.
I pulled out a chair and sat opposite her.
"Give me a number.""
"Sometimes I'd send her to her room without dinner.""
"How often?""
"Once or twice a week.""
My throat tightened.
"And the birthday?""
Vanessa looked toward the living room.
"She asked for chicken. Caleb had already taken the last piece.""
"Then?""
"I told her to wait.""
"And?""
"She kept asking.""
"So you sent her away.""
"She was interrupting.""
I stood again.
"She was hungry!""
Vanessa covered her face.
The officer asked her to continue.
She finally admitted that Maya had been told not to touch the food prepared for Caleb's guests.
She admitted that she had thrown away the birthday card after telling Maya that her father had forgotten her birthday.
She also admitted that she'd hidden several gifts I'd sent during my business trips.
One of the officers wrote everything down.
I felt sick.
Then I remembered something.
"The money.""
Vanessa looked up.
"What money?""
"The trust. You tried to transfer it.""
Her face tightened.
"I needed it.""
"For what?""
She hesitated.
Michael answered.
"Her debts.""
Vanessa shot him a furious look.
"Don't.""
I turned toward him.
"What debts?""
Michael leaned back.
"She owed money to several people. Credit cards, private loans, gambling.""
Vanessa stood.
"That's none of your business!""
I looked at her.
"You're right. My daughter's trust is not your business.""
She sat again.
I reached for my phone and called Mr. Miller.
"Please send me every document related to the attempted transfer.""
"Already prepared," he replied.
"But there's another issue.""
"What now?""
"Your wife's signature wasn't the only one on the request.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Someone countersigned as a witness.""
"Who?""
He paused.
"Michael Reed.""
I turned slowly.
Michael's face changed.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
I stared at him.
"You helped her steal my daughter's money?""
"I didn't know the full details.""
"Your signature is on the document.""
"Vanessa told me the transfer was authorized.""
"By whom?""
"By you.""
I laughed.
"You expected me to believe that?""
Michael looked down.
"I was trying to help my son.""
I stepped toward him.
"By stealing from my daughter?""
He didn't answer.
The officer asked him to sit.
Vanessa suddenly began speaking.
"Daniel, listen. The money was never going to disappear. I was going to use it for both children.""
I stared at her.
"Both children?""
"Caleb deserved a future too.""
"He has one. I gave him one.""
"But Maya already had Sarah's money.""
"Because her mother left it to her!""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Sarah always made sure Maya got everything!""
I stared at her.
Then I understood.
This wasn't just jealousy.
It was resentment that had been growing for years.
Vanessa had entered my marriage knowing about Sarah's trust. She had known I loved Maya. She had watched me provide for both children.
But she had never considered Maya part of her family.
Not really.
The officer asked Vanessa to stand.
She looked at me.
"Daniel, you're going to regret this.""
I said nothing.
She turned toward Michael.
"You promised me you'd handle everything.""
Michael shook his head.
"Don't drag me into this.""
"You signed the papers!""
"Because you told me—"
"Enough!"" the officer interrupted.
As Vanessa was escorted toward the front door, she suddenly stopped.
She looked upstairs.
"Caleb!""
Her son appeared at the top of the staircase.
He had removed his birthday crown.
His eyes were red.
"Mom?""
Vanessa's expression changed instantly.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
Caleb looked at the police officers.
Then at Michael.
"Why is that man here?""
Michael stood.
"Caleb, I'm your father.""
The boy stared at him.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"Mom, what is he talking about?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Caleb's face crumpled.
He looked at me.
"Daniel, is it true?""
I wanted to protect him.
He was only ten.
He hadn't asked for any of this.
I knelt in front of him.
"Caleb, none of this is your fault.""
He started crying.
"Are you still my dad?""
The question hit me harder than anything Vanessa had said.
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I've always cared about you, Caleb. That doesn't change because of something the adults did.""
He threw his arms around me.
And I held him.
But over his shoulder, I noticed Michael watching us with an expression I couldn't understand.
He looked almost relieved.
As though he had expected me to reject Caleb.
The officers eventually took Vanessa away for further questioning.
Michael was asked to accompany them and provide a statement about the financial documents.
Before leaving, he approached me.
"Daniel, I know you hate me.""
I didn't respond.
"But Sarah left something else. Something she asked me to give you if Vanessa ever tried to take Maya's money.""
He reached into his coat and removed a small silver key.
I recognized it immediately.
It belonged to the safe-deposit box Sarah had rented before she died.
"What's inside?"" I asked.
Michael looked toward the stairs.
"Something that explains why Vanessa was so determined to get rid of Maya.""
He placed the key in my hand.
May you like
Then he added:
"Sarah didn't just leave money for your daughter, Daniel. She left evidence.""
