Chapter 10: The Father Who Raised Me

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Patricia's words hung in the abandoned warehouse.

Richard Bennett isn't your biological father.

I looked at the man sitting in the wheelchair.

The man who had taught me to ride a bicycle.

The man who had worked double shifts to pay for my college education.

The man who had held my hand when I was afraid of the dark.

My father.

"Take that back," I whispered.

Patricia shook her head.

"I'm sorry, Marcus.""

"Take it back!""

Vanessa grabbed her mother's arm.

"Mom, what are you saying?""

Patricia pulled away.

"The truth.""

I turned toward Dad.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was staring at the photograph on the filing cabinet.

"Richard?""

His lips trembled.

"Marcus, I was going to tell you.""

My stomach dropped.

"You knew?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The warehouse suddenly felt unbearably small.

I stepped backward.

"How long?""

"Since you were born.""

I stared at him.

"All these years?""

He nodded.

"Your mother and I made a decision.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Who is my biological father?""

She answered before Dad could.

"Robert Whitmore.""

I felt sick.

The same man who had threatened my father.

The same man whose daughter I had nearly married.

The same man who had used my identity in a financial scheme.

Robert Whitmore was my biological father.

And Vanessa was my half-sister.

I looked at her.

She was crying.

"Marcus, I didn't know.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course you didn't.""

Patricia approached me.

"There's more to the story.""

I raised my hand.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

Dad finally looked up.

"Marcus, listen to me. Robert is your biological father, but he has never been your father.""

I stared at him.

"Then what does that make you?""

His eyes filled.

"The man who chose to raise you.""

He explained that before I was born, Mom had been involved with Robert.

When she discovered she was pregnant, Robert was already married to Patricia.

He promised to leave Patricia and build a family with Mom.

But Robert had another plan.

He wanted to keep his business empire intact.

When Mom told him she was pregnant, he offered her money to disappear.

She refused.

Then Robert threatened to challenge her custody rights and use his financial influence to take the child.

Mom turned to Richard.

They had known each other for years.

Richard loved her, and he agreed to marry her and raise me as his own.

"He knew from the beginning?"" I asked.

Dad nodded.

"I knew you weren't biologically mine. But I never considered you anything less than my son.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't want you growing up thinking you were unwanted.""

I looked down at my hands.

"Did Mom know Robert was my father?""

"Yes.""

"And you stayed?""

Dad gave a sad smile.

"Son, I didn't marry your mother because I thought she was perfect. I married her because I loved her. And I loved you before I ever held you.""

My throat tightened.

I remembered being seven years old, falling off my bicycle and scraping my knee.

Dad had carried me home.

When I was sixteen, he'd driven three hours through a snowstorm because I'd missed the last bus after a school event.

When I graduated college, he'd cried harder than Mom.

None of those memories had ever been false.

Yet everything suddenly felt different.

Patricia interrupted.

"Robert wanted Marcus to believe he was an ordinary businessman with no connection to the Whitmore family. He thought that if he controlled Marcus's identity and assets, he could eventually transfer everything through him.""

I turned toward her.

"Why would he need to use his own son's identity?""

"Because Robert's business was collapsing. He had debts he couldn't cover, properties tied up in lawsuits, and financial records that could send him to prison.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"He wanted Marcus to be the clean face of a new company.""

"Then why did you agree to marry me?""

She looked devastated.

"I thought I could separate the legitimate business from the illegal parts. I thought if we married, I could protect what was left.""

"By putting everything in my name?""

"I was wrong.""

"You humiliated my father because he knew the truth.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I was angry. Robert told me Richard was trying to take away the company I'd been promised.""

Dad looked at her.

"That company was built with money stolen from other people.""

She lowered her eyes.

The police officer accompanying us approached Patricia.

"Ma'am, we'd like you to explain your involvement in the surveillance operation.""

Patricia nodded.

"I'll cooperate.""

Michael collected the documents.

But before we left, Dad asked Patricia one question.

"Who was Steven trying to protect me from?""

Patricia looked toward the warehouse entrance.

"Robert wasn't the only person involved in the accident.""

"Who else?""

She took a long breath.

"The man who ordered Steven to follow you was someone who had access to your medical records, your business documents, and your family's personal information.""

Dad frowned.

"Who?""

Patricia looked at me.

"Your biological father.""

I shook my head.

"Robert?""

She nodded.

"He wanted to know whether Richard had discovered the original Northstar ownership records. He also wanted to know whether Marcus was aware of his biological identity.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because Robert had planned something for your thirtieth birthday.""

I was thirty-two.

"What happened on my thirtieth birthday?""

Patricia looked at Dad.

"He received a letter.""

Dad's face changed.

"What letter?""

Patricia reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.

It was dated two years earlier.

She handed it to me.

The letter was addressed to Robert Whitmore.

The boy is ready. Richard has kept him away long enough. Once he signs the transfer, the company will finally belong to us.

There was no signature.

Only three initials.

*E.B.*

My mother's initials.

I looked toward Dad.

He closed his eyes.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

Robert's voice came through.

"Hello, son.""

My blood turned cold.

"Don't call me that.""

He chuckled.

"You're upset. I understand.""

"What do you want?""

"To meet.""

"I have nothing to say to you.""

"You have everything to say to me. Half of Northstar belongs to you by birthright.""

"I don't want your company.""

"Then you haven't heard the whole offer.""

I looked at Dad.

Robert continued.

"Come to my office tomorrow morning. Bring the original ownership documents.""

"And if I don't?""

His voice became colder.

"Then the police will receive a recording proving that Richard Bennett falsified the accident report and arranged the entire incident to frame me.""

I stared at the phone.

Robert laughed softly.

"Think carefully, Marcus. You may have discovered who your biological father is, but you still don't know what the man who raised you did to keep you.""

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

Dad looked at me.

"What did he say?""

I told him.

May you like

For the first time that day, Dad looked genuinely frightened.

"Marcus," he whispered, "I think Robert has the original recording.""
