Chapter 9: The Man My Father Never Trusted
The USB drive contained forty-seven minutes of surveillance footage.
Michael brought it to his office the following morning, where he connected it to a computer that wasn't connected to the company's network.
Dad sat beside me.
Vanessa sat across the room, separated from us by a long conference table.
Nobody spoke.
Michael opened the first file.
The footage showed the Northstar warehouse from a security camera mounted above the loading entrance.
The timestamp read 9:17 P.M.
A black SUV entered the parking lot.
Robert Whitmore stepped out.
A second man followed.
Steven Cole.
The man who had supposedly hit my father.
Michael paused the video.
"Do you recognize him, Richard?""
Dad nodded.
"Yes.""
"From Northstar?""
"Steven worked maintenance security for us. He was a good employee. Quiet. Reliable.""
I looked at the screen.
"Why would he try to kill you?""
Dad didn't answer.
Michael resumed the footage.
Robert and Steven entered the building.
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa appeared.
She approached the SUV, looked around, and walked inside.
At 10:06 P.M., Robert came out alone.
He was holding a folder.
At 10:19 P.M., Steven returned to the vehicle.
Then something unexpected happened.
A second car pulled into the parking lot.
A silver sedan.
The driver stepped out.
I leaned forward.
It was my father.
Dad stared at the screen.
"I don't remember this.""
Michael paused the video.
"Richard, are you certain?""
Dad shook his head.
"I remember going to the warehouse that evening. I don't remember meeting Robert.""
Vanessa spoke quietly.
"You were there because you had called him.""
Dad turned toward her.
"Why?""
"Because you wanted to negotiate.""
"Negotiate what?""
She looked at Michael.
"Control of Northstar.""
Dad's face hardened.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa removed another document.
It was a meeting request sent from Dad's old email address.
The subject line read:
*Final Settlement — Northstar Ownership.*
Dad studied it.
"I didn't send this.""
Michael leaned closer.
"Do you still have access to that email account?""
"No. Robert closed the company's old server years ago.""
Michael examined the document.
"Then we need to verify the metadata.""
He continued playing the footage.
On screen, Dad entered the building.
Thirty minutes later, Robert came out.
He looked furious.
He made a phone call beside the SUV.
Then Steven approached him.
They argued.
Robert shoved him.
Steven shoved him back.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway and pulled them apart.
The footage ended.
Michael leaned back.
"That doesn't prove who arranged the accident.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Where is the second recording?""
She hesitated.
"What second recording?""
"You said you had the original evidence.""
"I gave you the footage.""
"You're holding something back.""
Her eyes moved toward Dad.
Then she reached into her bag.
She removed a small envelope.
"I found this inside Robert's private office.""
It contained a handwritten statement from Steven Cole.
The first paragraph said he had been hired to monitor Richard Bennett.
The second paragraph described the night of the accident.
I followed Mr. Bennett as instructed. When his vehicle stopped at the intersection, I approached him. I was told to frighten him and recover the documents.
I read the sentence again.
"Who told you to do that?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"The statement doesn't say.""
I continued reading.
The situation escalated. Mr. Bennett's vehicle struck the barrier. I panicked and left the scene.
At the bottom was a signature.
Steven Cole.
And a date.
Two weeks after Dad's accident.
Dad looked devastated.
"Why would he write this?""
Michael took the document.
"Because he may have been preparing to confess.""
"Where is he now?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Missing.""
Michael immediately picked up his phone.
"I need to contact the police.""
Before he could dial, Dad spoke.
"Wait.""
Everyone turned.
Dad looked at the signature.
"That isn't Steven's handwriting.""
Vanessa frowned.
"How would you know?""
"I hired him. I signed his employment contract. I saw his handwriting every week.""
Michael compared the two documents.
Dad was right.
The signature on the statement was almost identical to Steven's, but something was different.
The capital S was shaped incorrectly.
Michael looked up.
"This could be a forgery.""
Vanessa stood.
"Robert wouldn't forge something like this.""
Dad gave a bitter laugh.
"You still don't understand your father.""
She looked wounded.
Then she turned toward me.
"Marcus, I didn't come here to defend him.""
"Then tell us everything.""
Vanessa sat down again.
She took a deep breath.
"Robert told me that Steven was supposed to frighten Richard. He said the accident was never part of the plan.""
"Did you believe him?""
"I wanted to.""
"Did you know about the surveillance payments?""
"Yes.""
"Did you authorize them?""
She nodded.
I looked away.
Michael placed the documents in a folder.
"We need to preserve everything and have it examined. Nobody should contact Robert.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You have something that belongs to me.
I showed Michael.
He immediately asked for the phone.
The next message arrived.
Ask your father why he kept Steven Cole's original employment file hidden.
Dad stared at the screen.
"Who sent that?""
I checked the number.
Unknown.
Then another message appeared.
It contained a photograph.
The picture showed a small metal filing cabinet inside the old Northstar warehouse.
A red circle had been drawn around one drawer.
Beneath the photograph was a sentence.
Look in the bottom drawer. You'll find the real reason Richard was hit.
Michael stood.
"Nobody goes anywhere until we know who sent this.""
Dad looked at me.
"I need to see that cabinet.""
"Why?""
"Because I remember it.""
He stared at the photograph.
"Steven had a key to that drawer.""
Vanessa suddenly went pale.
"That's impossible.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
She shook her head.
"Robert told me the cabinet had been destroyed years ago.""
Dad slowly looked at her.
"Why would he tell you that?""
She didn't answer.
Michael called the police and requested that an officer accompany us to the warehouse.
An hour later, we arrived.
The building was empty except for old machinery and piles of discarded office furniture.
The metal cabinet stood in the back room.
The bottom drawer was locked.
Dad examined it.
"There's a hidden release beneath the handle.""
I pressed it.
The drawer opened.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Old contracts.
Bank statements.
Property deeds.
And a thick brown envelope with my father's name on it.
Dad opened the envelope.
His hands began shaking.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
It was addressed to him.
But the handwriting wasn't Robert's.
It belonged to Steven Cole.
Dad read the first few lines.
Then he stopped.
"Richard?"" I asked.
He handed me the letter.
Mr. Bennett,
If you're reading this, then I was unable to explain what happened before Robert found out I had kept the original files.
I need you to understand that I didn't hit your car because Robert ordered me to.
I looked up.
Dad's expression was frozen.
I continued reading.
I was trying to stop someone else from reaching you first.
My eyes moved down the page.
The person who ordered the surveillance wasn't Robert Whitmore.
I turned the page.
There was a name.
A name that made my blood run cold.
*Patricia Whitmore.*
Vanessa grabbed the letter.
"No.""
Dad looked at her.
"Your mother?""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"She wouldn't.""
But the final paragraph contained something even worse.
Patricia told me that Richard Bennett had stolen money from Northstar and planned to disappear. She said I needed to stop him before he destroyed Vanessa's future.
She promised me that nobody would get hurt.
But when I realized what was really happening, it was too late.
A loud noise came from somewhere behind us.
The warehouse door slammed.
Michael turned.
"Who's there?""
Footsteps echoed across the concrete floor.
Then a familiar voice answered.
"Put the letter down, Marcus.""
Patricia Whitmore stepped out from behind a row of storage shelves.
She was holding a leather handbag.
Her eyes moved to Vanessa.
"Darling, you weren't supposed to find that.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
"Mom?""
Patricia looked at my father.
Then she smiled sadly.
"Richard, I think it's time we stopped pretending Robert was the only villain in this family.""
Dad gripped the armrests of his wheelchair.
"What did you do?""
Patricia reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.
She placed it on the filing cabinet.
It showed Robert, Patricia, and my father standing together outside the original Northstar office.
But someone had been cropped out of the picture.
Patricia pointed to the empty space.
"There's one person you haven't met yet.""
I stared at her.
"Who?""
She looked directly at me.
"Your biological father.""
The words seemed to drain all the air from the warehouse.
Dad's face went white.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
May you like
And Patricia quietly added:
"Richard Bennett isn't your biological father, Marcus.""
