Chapter 4: The Secret My Mother Buried

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The photograph on my phone showed a hospital visitor log from the night my father was admitted after the accident.

My mother's signature was clearly visible.

11:42 P.M.

She had visited him less than two hours after the collision.

But Mom had always told me she'd been home that night, waiting for the police to call.

I looked at Daniel.

"What relationship did my mother have with Robert Whitmore?""

Daniel glanced toward the coffee shop window.

The black SUV was still parked across the street.

"Not here," he said.

"We need somewhere private.""

"Answer me.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Your mother worked for Robert Whitmore twenty-seven years ago.""

I frowned.

"She was a schoolteacher.""

"Before that.""

I shook my head.

"You're mistaken.""

"She was Robert's personal accountant. She handled his finances before his company became what it is today.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't she ever mention that?""

"Because something happened between them.""

"What?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Robert's first company collapsed. There was an investigation into missing money. Your mother discovered the records had been falsified. She reported it.""

"And?""

"Robert blamed her. He claimed she had stolen the money herself. She lost her job, her reputation, and almost went to prison.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Did she go to the police?""

"She tried. But the evidence disappeared.""

I looked at the visitor log again.

"Why would she visit Dad that night?""

Daniel didn't answer.

We left the coffee shop through the back entrance and drove separately to my parents' house.

I arrived first.

Mom was in the kitchen, washing a coffee cup.

She looked up when I entered.

"Marcus? I thought you'd be with Michael.""

I placed my phone on the counter.

"Why did you visit Dad at the hospital the night of his accident?""

The cup slipped slightly in her hands.

She turned off the faucet.

"What?""

I showed her the photograph.

She stared at it.

For a moment, her expression was unreadable.

Then she sat down.

"Where did you get this?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"It matters very much.""

"Mom, I need the truth.""

She looked toward the living room, where Dad was resting.

"Not in front of your father.""

"Why?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because he doesn't know everything.""

I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.

"Then tell me.""

Mom pulled out a chair.

"Twenty-seven years ago, before you were born, I worked for Robert Whitmore.""

I sat opposite her.

Daniel hadn't been lying.

She continued.

"Robert was building his first commercial property company. He was charming, persuasive, and very good at making people believe they were part of something important.""

"Did you know him personally?""

"Yes.""

"How personally?""

She looked away.

"Your father and I weren't married yet. We were having problems. Robert offered me a job, and eventually I made a mistake.""

My throat tightened.

"What mistake?""

Mom pressed her palms against the table.

"I had an affair with him.""

The words landed like a physical blow.

I stared at her.

"You were involved with Robert?""

"It was brief. It ended before I married your father.""

I stood and walked toward the refrigerator.

I needed something solid to hold onto.

"Does Dad know?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did Daniel make it sound like some enormous secret?""

"Because Robert used it against us for years.""

She wiped her cheek.

"When I discovered he was stealing from his own company, I confronted him. I had copies of financial records. He threatened to expose the affair and claim I had helped him.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

Her answer was immediate.

"I was young, Marcus. I made a terrible personal decision, but I never helped him steal anything.""

I turned back.

"Then why were you at the hospital?""

Mom's expression changed.

"Because Robert called me.""

"What did he want?""

"He told me your father had been involved in an accident. He said there were documents in Dad's car that could destroy several people.""

"Why would he call you?""

"Because he knew I understood the old accounting records. He wanted me to retrieve something before the police found it.""

I stared at her.

"Did you?""

Mom shook her head.

"I went to the hospital because I wanted to see your father. Robert had told me the accident was serious. I didn't know whether he'd survive.""

Her voice cracked.

"But when I arrived, I saw Robert standing outside the intensive care unit.""

"What?""

"He was speaking to a man in a dark suit. When he saw me, he walked over and told me to leave.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

She leaned closer.

"I asked him what he'd done.""

I felt my heartbeat quicken.

"What did he say?""

Mom looked toward the hallway.

"He said, 'The next time Richard interferes, Marcus will be the one paying for it.''"

I gripped the chair.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was terrified.""

"Of Robert?""

"Of what he could do to you.""

I shook my head.

"You let me build a relationship with Vanessa.""

"I didn't know she was involved until much later.""

"How much later?""

Mom looked down.

"About six months ago.""

I stared at her.

"Six months?""

She nodded.

"Vanessa came to see me. She asked about the old accounting records. She said she was trying to understand her father's business history.""

"What did you tell her?""

"Nothing.""

"Did she threaten you?""

Mom hesitated.

"She showed me a photograph.""

"Of what?""

"Your father lying in the hospital bed.""

I felt sick.

"She said her father had made a mistake once, and he wouldn't make another.""

A sound came from the living room.

Dad's wheelchair rolled toward the kitchen.

He had heard everything.

"Eleanor.""

Mom stood immediately.

"Richard, you should be resting.""

He shook his head.

"How long were you planning to keep this from him?""

She lowered her eyes.

"I was trying to protect our son.""

Dad looked at me.

"Marcus, your mother didn't cause my accident.""

"Do you know who did?""

He hesitated.

"Not with certainty.""

I held up the visitor log.

"Then why is Vanessa sending me these photographs?""

Dad studied the image.

His expression darkened.

"Because she's trying to make us turn against each other.""

I looked between them.

"There's more, isn't there?""

Dad nodded.

He reached for the envelope I had brought home from the church.

From it, he removed a second photograph.

This one showed a younger Robert Whitmore standing outside a building with another man.

The other man was holding a newborn baby.

I looked at the photograph.

Then at the date.

Twenty-seven years earlier.

Mom began crying.

Dad placed the photograph on the counter.

"Your mother wasn't the only person Robert betrayed.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Dad took a long breath.

"Before Robert married Patricia, he had another family.""

Mom covered her mouth.

Dad continued.

"And the child in that photograph...""

He turned the picture toward me.

I recognized the baby's name written on the back.

*Vanessa.*

Then he looked directly into my eyes.

"Son, Robert Whitmore may be Vanessa's father legally, but he isn't her biological father.""

Before I could process the words, someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Mom went pale.

Dad looked toward the hallway.

May you like

Then a man's voice called from outside.

"Richard? It's Robert. We need to talk.""
