Chapter 7: The Daughter Nobody Was Supposed to Know About
Patricia Whitmore stood in our doorway holding a black recording device.
Her expensive coat was unbuttoned, her makeup had run beneath her eyes, and her hands trembled so badly that Michael had to steady her arm.
Behind her, two police officers waited on the porch.
My father looked at her.
"Patricia.""
She nodded.
"Richard.""
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Dad asked the question that had been haunting all of us.
"Why did you wait twenty-seven years to tell me?""
Patricia lowered her eyes.
"Because Robert threatened to destroy Vanessa if I did.""
My mother stood beside the kitchen counter, looking like she might collapse.
I stepped forward.
"Let's start with the recording. What does it prove?""
Patricia placed the device on the table.
"It proves Robert knew who was driving the vehicle that hit Richard. But that's not the worst part.""
She pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then Robert's voice emerged.
"Richard has the original ownership documents. If he gives them to the authorities, everything we've built disappears.""
Another man answered.
"Then we should take the documents.""
Robert laughed.
"He's already suspicious. We need to make sure he can't talk.""
The second voice became clearer.
"What about his son?""
"Marcus is useful. Vanessa has him exactly where we need him.""
My stomach tightened.
Patricia paused the recording.
"That's the conversation from the night before Richard's accident.""
I stared at her.
"Vanessa was there?""
Patricia nodded.
"She recorded it because she had begun to suspect her father was planning something terrible.""
"Then why did she keep helping him?""
"Because Robert controlled her entire life.""
Patricia explained that Robert had raised Vanessa to believe she owed him everything.
He paid for her education, controlled her finances, selected her business partners, and made her believe the Whitmore name was the only reason anyone respected her.
Whenever she questioned him, he reminded her that he had raised her despite knowing she wasn't his biological daughter.
"He told her Richard had abandoned her," Patricia said.
"He said her biological father had refused to acknowledge her.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"That's not true.""
"I know.""
Patricia reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.
It showed a younger Richard standing beside Patricia at a company Christmas party.
She handed it to Dad.
"Do you remember this night?""
He stared at the picture.
"Of course.""
"Vanessa was conceived a few weeks later.""
My mother looked away.
Dad's voice was barely audible.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Patricia began crying.
"Because Robert convinced me that you wanted nothing to do with her. He showed me a letter supposedly written by you.""
Dad shook his head.
"I never wrote that letter.""
"I know that now.""
She removed another document.
It was a letter addressed to Patricia, dated twenty-seven years earlier.
The handwriting looked familiar.
I glanced at Dad.
"Is that yours?""
He took it.
Then his expression changed.
"That's not my handwriting.""
Patricia nodded.
"Robert forged it.""
She explained that the letter claimed Richard had decided to end their relationship and wanted no responsibility for the child.
Patricia had believed it.
Dad had never known Vanessa existed.
Until the DNA report arrived three months earlier.
I leaned against the table.
"Why did you come to our wedding?""
Patricia looked at me.
"Because I knew Robert planned to use the marriage to transfer control of Northstar's remaining assets. I hoped I could convince Vanessa to stop.""
"Did you know she would humiliate my father?""
"No.""
She hesitated.
"But I knew she was angry with Richard.""
"Why?""
"Because Robert told her that your father had spent years trying to reclaim the company that would eventually belong to her.""
Dad shook his head.
"I never wanted her money. I wanted the truth about what happened to Northstar.""
Patricia pressed the play button again.
The recording continued.
Robert's voice returned.
"Once Marcus signs the final documents, we can transfer the remaining liabilities. The company will be protected.""
Vanessa spoke.
"And Richard?""
Robert answered coldly.
"Richard will never be a problem again.""
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Patricia.
"Why did you say Vanessa helped him?""
Patricia removed another sheet of paper.
"Because I found this in her bedroom.""
It was a printed email dated two weeks before my wedding.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was Robert.
Dad, I reviewed the final transfer documents. Marcus has signed everything. Once we're married, I'll have authority over the holding company. We can close the remaining accounts without Richard interfering.
Below it was Robert's reply.
Good. Make sure the marriage happens.
I felt my jaw tighten.
"She knew exactly what she was doing.""
Patricia nodded.
"Yes.""
For a moment, I couldn't look at anyone.
I had loved Vanessa.
I'd imagined children, holidays, a house with a garden, and growing old together.
Meanwhile, she had been preparing to use my identity to protect her father's business.
One of the officers stepped forward.
"Mr. Bennett, we'd like to ask everyone some questions. We also need to secure these recordings.""
Michael raised his hand.
"Before anyone gives a formal statement, I'd like to establish the chain of custody for the original device.""
The officer nodded.
While Michael spoke with them, Patricia approached my father.
She knelt beside his wheelchair.
"Richard, I know I have no right to ask you for anything.""
Dad looked at her.
"Then don't.""
She nodded, accepting the response.
"I just want you to know Vanessa isn't entirely like her father.""
Dad's eyes hardened.
"She had a choice.""
"Yes.""
"She chose to help him.""
Patricia lowered her head.
"Yes.""
Dad looked toward the window.
"Then she'll have to answer for that.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
Marcus, it's Vanessa. I know Patricia is with you.
Another message followed.
Please don't let them take the recording to the police.
I stared at the screen.
Then came a third message.
I have the original evidence from the accident. But if you want it, you need to meet me tonight.
I showed Michael.
He immediately shook his head.
"Don't go alone.""
I typed a response.
Where?
Her answer arrived seconds later.
The old Northstar building. Midnight.
Then she sent one final message.
And Marcus, bring my biological father.
I looked at Dad.
He had already read it.
His face was pale.
"She wants to meet me?""
I nodded.
Dad slowly straightened in his wheelchair.
"Then I think it's time I met my daughter.""
But Patricia grabbed his arm.
"Richard, wait.""
She looked terrified.
"There's something else. Robert knows about the recording.""
I turned.
"How?""
Patricia swallowed.
"Because Vanessa didn't just record him.""
She looked directly at my father.
"She recorded the person who gave Robert your location that night.""
Dad's expression changed.
May you like
Patricia whispered:
"It was someone inside your own house.""
