Chapter 8: The Woman Who Made the Call

My mother didn't deny it.

That was what frightened me most.

When Patricia said someone inside our house had given Robert my father's location, Mom simply closed her eyes.

Dad stared at her.

"Eleanor?""

She gripped the kitchen counter.

"Richard, please.""

"Was it you?""

Mom began shaking her head.

"I didn't know what he was going to do.""

Dad's voice rose.

"Was it you?""

She sank into a chair.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.

My mother had spent fourteen months visiting Dad in rehabilitation.

She had held his hand through painful therapy sessions.

She had cried beside his hospital bed.

And now she was admitting that she'd helped Robert find him.

"Why?"" I whispered.

Mom looked at me.

"Because he threatened you.""

"Who?""

"Robert.""

She explained that three days before the accident, Robert had contacted her.

He told her he knew about the old partnership documents and wanted to arrange a meeting with Richard.

Mom refused.

Then Robert sent her a photograph of me leaving my office.

Beneath it was a message.

Your son has become involved in something he doesn't understand.

Mom said she panicked.

"He told me he only wanted to speak with Richard. He promised no one would be hurt.""

Dad looked at her with disbelief.

"So you gave him my location?""

Mom nodded through tears.

"I thought if I cooperated, he'd leave Marcus alone.""

I stood.

"You knew Dad was being followed?""

"No.""

"You knew Robert was threatening him?""

"Yes.""

"And you still gave him the information?""

Mom covered her face.

"I was scared.""

I walked toward the front door.

I couldn't breathe in that room.

Dad called after me.

"Marcus, wait.""

I turned.

He looked exhausted.

"Your mother made a terrible decision. But I don't want you to make one while you're angry.""

I stared at him.

"She helped the man who almost killed you.""

"I know.""

"How can you sit there and defend her?""

"I'm not defending what she did.""

Dad's voice softened.

"I'm asking you not to let Robert destroy what's left of this family.""

I looked at Mom.

She was crying silently.

I wanted to believe her.

But I couldn't.

Michael interrupted.

"We need to hear the entire recording before deciding what happened.""

Patricia nodded.

She connected the device to Michael's laptop.

A second recording appeared.

The timestamp was from the night before Dad's accident.

Mom's voice came through first.

"Robert, I told you I wouldn't get involved.""

Robert answered.

"You already are.""

"I won't give you Richard's location.""

"Then Marcus will have a very difficult week.""

There was a long silence.

Then Mom spoke.

"Leave my son alone.""

Robert laughed.

"Then tell me where Richard is meeting Daniel tomorrow.""

Mom whispered an address.

Dad closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Robert said, "Good. Now go home and forget we spoke.""

Mom replied, "You promised nobody would be hurt.""

Robert's voice turned cold.

"I promised nothing.""

The recording ended.

Mom began sobbing.

Dad looked away.

I turned toward her.

"Did you know he was planning an attack?""

"No.""

"Did you call the police afterward?""

She shook her head.

"Why not?""

"He called me the next morning. He said Richard had been in an accident. Then he told me if I spoke to anyone, he'd make sure you were arrested for helping him.""

I felt sick.

Michael paused the recording.

"Mrs. Bennett, did you ever receive anything from Robert after the accident?""

Mom nodded.

She walked upstairs and returned with a small envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

You kept your son safe. Keep your mouth shut, and he'll stay that way.

Dad stared at it.

"Fourteen months," he whispered.

Mom reached for his hand.

"Richard, I wanted to tell you.""

He pulled away.

"When?""

She couldn't answer.

The police officers took copies of the recording and note.

Michael arranged for the original files to be preserved.

By late afternoon, Patricia had left to speak with her attorney.

I remained with Dad.

He sat beside the window, staring at the quiet street.

"Do you hate her?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"No.""

"How?""

"Because hate doesn't change what happened.""

He paused.

"But trust may never come back.""

At 8:40 that evening, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

"At the Northstar building.""

"You're early.""

"I want to know why you asked me to bring my father.""

She went quiet.

Then she said, "Because I want to meet him.""

"Why now?""

"Because I finally know what Robert did.""

I looked toward Dad.

He nodded.

Michael insisted on accompanying us, although Vanessa had specifically requested that we come alone.

We arrived at the old Northstar building at 11:45.

The property looked abandoned.

The metal sign above the entrance was rusted, and several windows were covered with plywood.

A single light glowed on the second floor.

We entered through a side door.

Vanessa stood beside an old conference table.

She wasn't wearing makeup.

Her hair was tied back, and she wore a black sweater and jeans.

For the first time since I'd met her, she looked like someone who wasn't trying to impress anybody.

Her eyes moved to Dad.

Then she whispered:

"Hello.""

Dad looked at her.

"Hello, Vanessa.""

She swallowed.

"I know you probably hate me.""

Dad said nothing.

She stepped closer.

"I found out three days ago.""

"About what?""

"That you're my biological father.""

Dad looked down at his hands.

"I found out three months ago.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Why didn't you come looking for me?""

Dad's voice remained calm.

"I didn't know where you were, and I didn't know whether you wanted to meet me.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Robert told me you abandoned me.""

"I never knew you existed.""

She looked at me.

"Marcus, I didn't know either.""

I stared at her.

"You knew about the money.""

She nodded.

"You knew about the documents.""

"Yes.""

"You knew my father was investigating Robert.""

Her eyes dropped.

"Yes.""

"Then don't tell me you knew nothing.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"I was trying to keep my father from going to prison. I thought the financial problems could be fixed. I thought nobody would get hurt.""

I stepped closer.

"My father was hit by a car.""

"I know.""

"Then you stood in a church and humiliated him.""

Her face crumpled.

"I know.""

"Why?""

She looked at Dad.

"Because I was angry with him. Robert told me Richard was trying to take everything away from our family. He said your father wanted to destroy my future.""

Dad spoke quietly.

"Your future was never mine to destroy.""

Vanessa began crying.

Then she opened a small leather bag and removed a USB drive.

"This contains the original surveillance footage from the warehouse.""

Michael stepped forward.

"How did you get it?""

"I copied it before Robert could delete everything.""

"Does it identify the driver?""

Vanessa nodded.

She placed the USB drive on the table.

Then she looked directly at Dad.

"There's something else.""

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a photograph of a police incident report.

The driver had been identified as a man named Steven Cole.

But beneath his name was a handwritten note.

*Witness instructed to contact Eleanor Bennett.*

Dad looked at Mom's name.

"Why would he contact her?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Because Steven didn't work for Robert.""

"Who did he work for?""

She hesitated.

Then she said:

"Your father.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at Dad.

"Steven Cole was employed by Northstar before the company collapsed. And he claims Richard personally hired him to protect the family.""

Dad's face drained of color.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa removed one final document.

It was an old employment contract.

Dad's signature appeared at the bottom.

And beside it was a handwritten instruction dated fourteen months earlier.

If anything happens to me, contact Eleanor. She knows where the original records are hidden.

Dad stared at the paper.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"I didn't write that.""
