Chapter 6: The Signature That Changed Everything
I stared at my mother.
She stood beside the kitchen counter, one hand pressed against her mouth.
My father looked at her as if he had just seen a ghost.
"Is it true?"" I asked.
Mom shook her head.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
"Did you sign away Dad's company?""
"No.""
I held up my phone.
"Michael says your signature is on the transfer agreement.""
She looked at Dad.
He slowly reached for the document.
"Let me see.""
I placed it in front of him.
Dad studied the signature.
His expression changed.
"Eleanor, what is this?""
Mom sat down.
"I didn't transfer the company.""
"Then why is your signature here?""
She looked at me.
"Because Robert asked me to sign something twenty-seven years ago.""
Dad's face hardened.
"What did you sign?""
"A temporary authorization.""
"For what?""
"To access the company's old financial records.""
Dad shook his head.
"That isn't what this document says.""
"I know.""
Mom began crying.
"I didn't know he'd use it like this.""
I pulled out a chair.
"Start from the beginning.""
Mom took a deep breath.
"After Robert and your father ended their partnership, Robert contacted me. He said he needed help closing some old accounts. He told me there were unpaid taxes and outstanding contracts that needed to be resolved.""
"Why would you help him?""
"Because he said he was going to make trouble for your father. He threatened to accuse him of stealing company money.""
Dad looked stunned.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I was afraid.""
"Richard, I had already been accused of destroying his company. I thought if I could help close the accounts quietly, he'd leave us alone.""
Mom wiped her eyes.
"He brought me a stack of papers. I signed the authorization. I didn't read every page.""
I felt anger rising.
"Mom, you signed legal documents without reading them?""
"I know how foolish that sounds.""
"Did you know Vanessa's name was involved?""
"No.""
She looked directly at me.
"I swear I didn't.""
Dad pushed the document away.
"Robert has been using that signature for years.""
I looked at him.
"How?""
Dad explained that the original partnership agreement gave him a 50% ownership interest in Northstar.
But after the company was restructured, a series of legal transfers had gradually moved the controlling shares into a new holding entity.
The latest records showed Vanessa as the majority beneficiary.
If those documents were accepted by a court, she could potentially claim ownership of assets connected to the original company.
Including properties that Dad had spent years trying to protect.
"Why would Robert put everything in Vanessa's name?"" I asked.
Dad stared at the table.
"Because he knew his own signature would attract attention.""
Mom suddenly stood.
"There's something else.""
We both turned.
She walked toward the hallway and returned with a small metal box.
I'd seen it before.
It had belonged to my grandmother.
Mom placed it on the table and unlocked it.
Inside were old photographs, letters, and a sealed plastic envelope.
She removed a folded document.
"I kept this because I knew one day Robert might come after us again.""
Dad stared at the paper.
"Where did you get that?""
"From Patricia.""
Mom unfolded it.
It was a letter dated twenty-seven years earlier.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
The signature at the bottom read:
*Patricia Whitmore.*
Mom began reading aloud.
Eleanor,
I know you have suffered because of Robert. I know what he did to Richard's company, and I know he has convinced everyone that you were responsible.
But there is something you need to understand.
The child I am raising is not Robert's biological daughter.
Mom stopped.
I leaned forward.
She continued.
I discovered the truth shortly after Vanessa was born. Robert knew as well. He promised to protect her and raise her as his own, but he has used her as leverage in his business dealings ever since.
If anything happens to Richard, I want you to know that Vanessa deserves the truth. She deserves to know who her biological father is.
And Richard deserves to know that his daughter is being used as a weapon.
I looked at Dad.
His hands were trembling.
"Why didn't Patricia tell you directly?""
Mom folded the letter.
"She did. But Robert intercepted the first two letters. I only received this one because Patricia gave it to me in person.""
"Does Vanessa know?""
"I don't think so.""
Dad looked toward the window.
"Then Robert has been lying to everyone.""
I sat back.
There were too many questions.
Why had Robert raised Vanessa as his own daughter?
Why had he hidden her biological identity?
Why was she being placed at the center of a financial scheme involving my father's company?
And why had she chosen to marry me?
I suddenly remembered something Vanessa had told me six months earlier.
We had been having dinner at an expensive restaurant when she asked about my father's health.
She had seemed unusually interested in his medical records.
At the time, I'd thought she was being caring.
Now I wondered whether she had been looking for information about her biological father.
My phone vibrated.
Michael had sent another message.
I found the original filing. There's a clause that may invalidate the transfer. But I need your father to confirm something.
I called him.
"What did you find?""
"Northstar's original ownership agreement included a condition that any transfer of shares required both partners' written consent.""
"Robert and Dad?""
"Correct. Your mother's authorization alone couldn't transfer Richard's ownership.""
"So the transfer is invalid?""
"Potentially. But there's another issue.""
"What?""
"The company filed a separate declaration claiming your father voluntarily abandoned his ownership rights after the accident.""
My blood ran cold.
"When was that filed?""
"Four days after he was hit.""
I looked at Dad.
"Did you sign anything in the hospital?""
He shook his head.
"No. I couldn't even hold a pen.""
Michael continued.
"Someone submitted a declaration with a medical certification stating Richard was mentally incapable of managing his business affairs.""
Dad's face went white.
"That's a lie.""
"I know," Michael said.
"But the declaration has a doctor's signature.""
"Which doctor?""
Michael gave me the name.
I recognized it immediately.
Dr. Alan Foster.
He had been Dad's attending physician during the first weeks of his hospitalization.
I remembered him telling us that Dad's injuries were severe but that his cognitive functions were intact.
"Why would he sign that?""
Michael sighed.
"That's what we need to find out.""
I hung up.
Dad stared at the floor.
Mom was crying quietly.
Then my phone rang again.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke.
"Marcus? This is Patricia Whitmore.""
I looked at Dad.
"Vanessa's mother?""
"Yes. I need to see you.""
"Why?""
Her voice trembled.
"Because Robert has discovered that you have the original documents.""
"How do you know?""
"Because he just came to my house.""
I stood.
"What happened?""
She lowered her voice.
"He took Vanessa's passport, her phone, and every document he could find.""
"Why would he do that?""
"Because Vanessa finally told him she wants to leave.""
I froze.
"Leave?""
"She came to me last night. She knows about the money. She knows about the accident. And she knows that Robert has been lying to her about her biological father.""
I looked at Dad.
He slowly lifted his head.
"Does she know who her real father is?"" I asked.
Patricia began crying.
"Yes.""
There was a long silence.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
"Marcus, Vanessa isn't just Robert's victim. She helped him.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What do you mean?""
"She signed the payment authorization for the surveillance team. She helped prepare the financial documents. And she knew your father was investigating them.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
"Because I found something in her bedroom.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
My heart began pounding.
"What recording?""
Patricia's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Vanessa recorded a conversation between Robert and the man who hit your father.""
I looked at Dad.
He was staring directly at me.
"Can you send it?""
"No. Robert has been watching my house. I don't trust my phone.""
"Then where are you?""
"At the old Northstar office.""
"Stay there. I'll come.""
"Marcus, there's one more thing.""
"What?""
"Your father needs to know that the man who hit him wasn't acting alone.""
I looked at Dad.
Patricia continued.
"Robert paid him. But the person who gave the driver your father's location was...""
The line suddenly went silent.
I checked my screen.
The call had disconnected.
Then a message appeared.
It was a photograph of the recording device.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
I found the original audio. Listen carefully to the final thirty seconds.
I opened the attached recording.
At first, there was static.
Then Robert's voice.
"Richard won't be a problem anymore.""
A second voice answered.
"Are you sure?""
Robert replied.
"Yes. But there's one person we still need to deal with.""
The second voice asked:
"Who?""
Robert lowered his voice.
"Marcus.""
Then a woman spoke.
A woman whose voice I recognized immediately.
My mother.
"Don't touch my son.""
The recording ended.
I looked at her.
Mom's face had gone completely white.
Dad slowly reached for her hand.
"Eleanor...""
She began shaking her head.
"I didn't know what they were planning.""
I stepped back.
"Mom, what did you do?""
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the doorbell rang.
Michael stood outside with two uniformed police officers.
And behind them was Patricia Whitmore.
She was holding a small black recording device.
"Marcus," she said, her eyes fixed on my father.
"There's something I haven't told you about Vanessa's birth.""
May you like
Then she looked at me.
"And the truth is going to change everything you think you know about your family.""
