Chapter 1: The Little Girl Who Stopped the Wedding

“She took Mommy away!””

Six-year-old Lily Carter pointed straight at Vanessa in the middle of the wedding ceremony, her small finger trembling beneath the bright chapel lights. Three hundred guests turned toward the flower girl, and Daniel Carter, standing beside his bride at the altar, felt his entire world crack open.

Vanessa froze.

For one brief second, the polished smile on her face disappeared. Her fingers tightened around her ivory bouquet until the white roses bent beneath her grip.

Then she smiled again.

“What did you just say?”” Daniel asked.

Lily stood beside the white floral altar in her flower-girl dress, her curly hair pinned back with tiny pearl clips. Her cheeks were flushed, but she didn't look away from Vanessa.

“She took Mommy away, Daddy.””

A whisper traveled through the seated guests.

Daniel's mother, Evelyn, rose halfway from her front-row chair. His best man, Marcus, leaned forward. Somewhere near the back, a woman gasped loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

Daniel looked from his daughter to his bride.

"Enough, Lily!"" he snapped, grabbing her arm when she stepped toward him.

"You cannot stand here and say things like that!""

Lily flinched.

Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't cry.

Vanessa reached for Daniel's hand.

"Baby, please," she said softly.

"She's confused. She's been under so much stress lately.""

Daniel swallowed hard.

For two years, he'd tried to explain the disappearance of his wife, Camille, to their daughter. Camille had vanished on an ordinary Tuesday evening, leaving behind her purse, her wedding ring, and a half-finished dinner on the kitchen counter.

Her car had been found outside a downtown parking garage.

Her phone had disappeared.

No body had ever been recovered.

The police had searched the surrounding neighborhoods, interviewed coworkers, and questioned everyone who might have known where she'd gone. Daniel had spent his savings on private investigators. He'd covered his bedroom walls with photographs and maps until Evelyn finally begged him to stop.

Eventually, the case went cold.

But Daniel had never stopped looking.

Not really.

Then Vanessa entered his life.

She was beautiful, composed, and patient in a way that made people trust her. She remembered Lily's favorite bedtime stories. She attended every school event. She sat beside Daniel during the long nights when memories of Camille kept him awake.

When he proposed, Vanessa cried.

"I don't want to replace her," she'd whispered against his chest.

"I only want to love you and Lily.""

Daniel had believed her.

Now, beneath the bright daylight pouring through the chapel's tall windows, his daughter was looking at Vanessa as though she were staring at a monster wearing a wedding dress.

Vanessa bent toward Lily.

"Sweetheart," she said, lowering her voice, "remember what we talked about? Today is supposed to be a happy day.""

Lily stepped backward.

"Don't call me that.""

Vanessa's smile tightened.

Daniel stared at his daughter.

"Lily, where is this coming from?""

"I saw it.""

"Saw what?""

"On your phone," Lily whispered.

Vanessa's bouquet shifted in her hands.

Daniel noticed.

It was a tiny movement, barely more than a tremor, but he'd spent two years watching detectives examine photographs and videos for details everyone else missed. He knew what fear looked like when someone tried to hide it.

"Vanessa?"" he asked.

She laughed nervously.

"Daniel, she's six. Children misunderstand things. We should take her outside and let her calm down.""

"No!"" Lily shouted.

The word echoed across the chapel.

She twisted free from Daniel's grasp and hurried down the aisle toward the projector table beside the ceremony area.

"Lily!"" Daniel called.

She ignored him.

A bridesmaid moved to intercept her, but Lily ducked past the woman's outstretched arm. Her little white shoes slapped against the polished floor.

Vanessa dropped her bouquet.

The flowers struck the floor, scattering white petals across the aisle.

"Stop her!"" Vanessa screamed.

That was when Daniel truly became afraid.

Not because Lily had disobeyed him.

Not because hundreds of guests were watching.

But because Vanessa had never raised her voice at Lily before.

Not once.

And now, with a video projector sitting between them, his bride looked as though his daughter had just reached for a loaded weapon.

Lily climbed onto the low platform beside the projector table. Her fingers shook as she searched through the open laptop.

"Come back here!"" Daniel shouted.

She found the file.

Vanessa lunged forward.

"Daniel, get her away from that computer!""

Lily pressed PLAY.

The projector flickered.

Every conversation stopped.

A grainy image appeared on the large screen beside the altar. The footage showed the entrance to a parking garage at night, its concrete pillars marked with yellow stripes.

Daniel recognized the place immediately.

He had stood outside that garage dozens of times.

It was where investigators had found Camille's abandoned car.

His mouth went dry.

On the screen, a woman stood beside a dark sedan.

Vanessa.

Two years younger, wearing a long coat, her hair pulled into a low bun.

Daniel stared at the screen, unable to breathe.

A second figure entered the frame.

The person's face remained outside the camera's view, but one hand held a thick envelope. Vanessa accepted it, looked over her shoulder, and tucked the envelope inside her coat.

The clip ended.

A woman in the front row covered her mouth.

Marcus stood up.

"Daniel, what the hell is this?""

Daniel couldn't answer.

He was staring at Vanessa.

She had gone completely pale.

Lily climbed down from the platform and approached her father, holding the laptop against her chest.

"I found it on her phone, Daddy," she whispered.

Daniel turned toward his daughter.

"How long have you had this?""

"Since yesterday.""

"Yesterday?""

Lily nodded, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand.

"I wanted to tell you, but she said you'd be mad at me.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That's not true!""

For the first time since Daniel had known her, the words came out sharp and ugly.

Lily shrank against her father's side.

Daniel moved between them.

"Don't you dare shout at my daughter.""

Vanessa looked around the chapel, noticing the guests watching her with expressions that had shifted from confusion to suspicion.

She straightened her dress.

"Daniel, please. There is an explanation.""

"Then explain the video.""

"It isn't what you think.""

"What am I supposed to think?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The laptop chimed.

Lily looked down at the screen.

"Daddy," she whispered.

"There's another one.""

Daniel glanced at the projector.

A second video file was loading.

Its title appeared in large white letters against a black background.

*THE NIGHT YOUR WIFE DISAPPEARED*

Daniel stopped moving.

Vanessa's hand closed around his wrist.

"Don't play that," she whispered.

He looked at her fingers gripping his skin.

Then he looked into her eyes.

For the first time, Daniel wondered whether the woman he was about to marry had ever loved him at all.

And whether Camille's disappearance had been the beginning of something much worse.

The loading bar reached its final inch.

The chapel fell silent.

Then the screen went white.
