Chapter 4: The Woman at the Chapel Doors
The handle turned again.
Lily screamed, "Mommy!""
Daniel spun toward the chapel doors so quickly that his shoes slipped against the polished floor. Every guest turned with him. Sunlight poured through the tall windows, illuminating the white roses, the abandoned bouquet, and the faces of three hundred people who had forgotten they were attending a wedding.
The doors opened.
A Black woman stood in the entrance, wearing a cream-colored suit and holding a small black handbag. She appeared to be in her late thirties, with shoulder-length curls, a slender face, and a faint scar running along her left cheek.
She looked directly at Daniel.
"Hello, Daniel.""
He couldn't move.
The woman took one step inside.
Lily tore away from her father and ran down the aisle.
"Mommy!""
The woman dropped her handbag and caught the little girl as she threw herself into her arms.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel heard himself whisper, "Camille?""
The woman pressed her cheek against Lily's curls.
"I'm here, baby. I'm here.""
Lily clung to her mother's waist, sobbing so hard she could barely speak.
"You were gone. You were gone for so long.""
Camille closed her eyes.
"I know, sweetheart.""
"You didn't come back.""
"I know.""
"You promised.""
That last word broke something in Camille's face. She sank to her knees, holding Lily against her chest as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I'm so sorry.""
Daniel stood beside the altar, unable to understand what his eyes were showing him.
For two years, he had imagined this moment in a thousand different ways. He had imagined finding Camille in a hospital, recognizing her in a crowd, or receiving a phone call that would finally end the nightmare.
He had never imagined seeing her walk into the chapel while he stood in a tuxedo beside another woman.
He took one uncertain step forward.
"Camille.""
She lifted her head.
Their eyes met.
Daniel saw the woman he had married. The same dark brown eyes. The same dimple near the corner of her mouth. The same tiny gold stud in her right ear.
But something had changed.
She looked at him as if he were a stranger she had once known very well.
"Daniel," she said.
He approached slowly.
"You're alive.""
Camille nodded.
"Yes.""
He stopped a few feet away.
"Where have you been?""
She looked down at Lily.
"I'll explain everything.""
"Two years," he said.
"I've spent two years looking for you.""
"I know.""
"I searched hospitals. I hired investigators. I went to the police every week until they stopped taking my calls.""
Camille's eyes filled with fresh tears.
"I know what you did.""
"Then why didn't you call me?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel's voice rose.
"Why did you leave your daughter wondering whether her mother was dead?""
Camille flinched.
Lily pulled away from her mother and reached for Daniel's hand.
"Don't shout at Mommy.""
He looked down at his daughter.
The little girl who had just watched her wedding ceremony collapse was now standing between the two people she loved most, trying to protect them from each other.
Daniel crouched and pulled her into his arms.
"I'm not angry with you, baby.""
Lily shook her head.
"Don't make Mommy leave again.""
He couldn't promise that.
He couldn't promise anything.
Behind them, Vanessa let out a broken laugh.
"Well," she said, wiping her cheeks, "I suppose that answers one question.""
Camille slowly stood.
Vanessa stared at her.
"You told me you would never come back.""
"I changed my mind.""
"You said Daniel would be safer if you stayed away.""
Camille's expression hardened.
"He would have been safer if you had told him the truth.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You have no idea what I sacrificed to protect you.""
"Protect me?"" Camille stepped forward.
"You took money from my account. You hid evidence. You let my daughter grow up believing her mother had abandoned her.""
"I never took a penny from your account.""
"Then explain the envelope.""
Vanessa's mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Daniel rose slowly.
"Somebody is going to explain something to me before this day is over.""
Camille turned toward him.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
She looked at Lily.
"Not here.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Everybody keeps telling me that. First Vanessa. Then you. Then my own mother.""
At the mention of Evelyn, Camille's gaze shifted toward the front row.
Evelyn stood beside her chair, her handbag clutched tightly against her side.
For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.
Camille's face changed.
"Daniel," she said quietly, "where is your mother going?""
He turned.
Evelyn had begun moving toward the side aisle.
"Mom?""
She stopped.
"Sit down," Daniel said.
"I'm going to the restroom.""
"You're leaving?""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
Camille stepped away from Lily.
"Evelyn, do you still have the original ledger?""
Evelyn went perfectly still.
A guest near the aisle whispered, "What ledger?""
Evelyn's fingers tightened around her handbag.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Camille nodded slowly.
"That's what you told the investigators, too.""
Daniel looked at his mother.
"What ledger?""
Evelyn raised her chin.
"This is a circus. I will not stand here while a woman who abandoned her family accuses me of crimes.""
Camille's voice sharpened.
"I didn't abandon my family. I disappeared because somebody threatened my daughter.""
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
"Who threatened Lily?""
Camille looked at him.
"I'll tell you. But first, I need to know whether your mother still has the original.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"You're lying.""
"Then open your bag.""
"No.""
"Open it.""
"I said no!""
The sudden shout startled several guests.
Marcus stepped into the aisle, blocking Evelyn's path toward the side door.
"Nobody's leaving until we figure out what's happening.""
Evelyn glared at him.
"You have no authority over me.""
"You're right," Marcus said.
"But Daniel is your son, and his wife just walked through those doors alive. You owe him some answers.""
Evelyn turned toward Daniel.
"You're going to let these people humiliate me?""
Daniel looked at the woman who had raised him.
He remembered her holding him after his father died. He remembered her sitting beside Camille during Lily's birth. He remembered her bringing casseroles to their house when Camille vanished, insisting that Daniel needed to eat.
He had trusted her without question.
"Mom," he said, "what is the ledger?""
Evelyn's eyes glistened.
Then she reached into her handbag.
Daniel took a breath, expecting her to produce a document.
Instead, she pulled out a small black pistol.
A wave of screams swept through the chapel.
Marcus immediately stepped backward, raising both hands.
Lily buried her face against Camille.
Daniel stared at the weapon in his mother's hand.
"Evelyn," Camille whispered, "please don't.""
Evelyn's fingers trembled around the grip.
"You should have stayed gone.""
Daniel felt his blood turn to ice.
"Mom, put it down.""
She looked at him with tears running down her face.
"I did everything for you.""
May you like
The gun shifted toward Camille.
And Daniel realized that the woman who had spent two years helping him search for his missing wife might have known exactly where she was all along.
