Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Inside the Handbag
"Mom, look at me.""
Daniel kept his voice low.
Evelyn stood in the aisle with the pistol held against her chest. The guests nearest her had scrambled away from their chairs. A flower arrangement lay overturned near the front row, white petals scattered beneath the bright chapel lights.
Camille wrapped both arms around Lily.
"Daniel, don't approach her," she warned.
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
"Of course you'd say that. You've always known how to make yourself look innocent.""
Camille didn't move.
"I never wanted this to happen.""
"Then you shouldn't have come back.""
"I came back because Lily deserves the truth.""
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"The truth? You have no idea what the truth would do to this family.""
Daniel took one slow step toward his mother.
"Put the gun down, Mom.""
She raised it slightly.
"Stay where you are.""
He stopped.
For the first time in his life, he could see how little he knew about the woman standing before him. Her shoulders were rigid. Her breathing came in short, shallow bursts. She wasn't behaving like a grieving mother who had lost control of herself.
She was behaving like someone whose carefully constructed world was collapsing.
"Why do you have a gun?"" Daniel asked.
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I knew this day might come.""
Camille closed her eyes.
"You knew I would come back.""
"I knew you wouldn't be able to keep your mouth shut forever.""
"Then why didn't you stop me when you had the chance?""
The question hung between them.
Daniel looked at Camille.
"What does that mean?""
Camille swallowed.
"Three days before I disappeared, I found financial records linking your mother's charitable foundation to a series of fraudulent transfers.""
Evelyn's face hardened.
"That's a lie.""
Camille continued.
"The foundation was supposed to help families who had lost their homes. Donations came in from churches, businesses, and private donors. But hundreds of thousands of dollars were being transferred into shell companies.""
Daniel stared at his mother.
"You told me the foundation was doing well.""
"It was.""
"Where did the money go?""
Evelyn's lips trembled.
"Your wife doesn't understand accounting.""
Camille shook her head.
"I worked in financial auditing before I became a mother. I understood exactly what I was looking at.""
She glanced toward the guests.
"That's why I took copies of the records. I planned to give them to the authorities.""
Evelyn's grip tightened around the pistol.
"And you were warned not to.""
Camille's voice became quiet.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked between them.
"Who warned you?""
Neither woman answered.
He stepped closer.
"Who?""
Camille looked directly at Evelyn.
"Your mother told me that if I reported the transfers, she would make sure I never saw Lily again.""
Daniel felt as though the floor had shifted beneath his feet.
"Mom?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"She misunderstood me.""
"You threatened my wife?""
"I was trying to protect you!""
"From what?""
"From being destroyed by her accusations!""
Daniel's voice broke.
"You would rather threaten Camille than explain where the money went?""
Evelyn lowered her gaze for a moment.
Then she looked up again, and something hard settled into her expression.
"You don't understand how much I sacrificed to build this family.""
"That doesn't answer the question.""
"Your father left debts you couldn't imagine. The business was failing. We were going to lose everything.""
Daniel stared at her.
His father had died when Daniel was twenty-three, leaving behind a small construction company and a house with a leaking roof. Evelyn had worked two jobs while Daniel attended college. She had told him she paid off the debts through years of careful saving.
He had admired her for it.
"You told me Dad's business recovered," he said.
"It did.""
"With stolen money?""
"With money I borrowed and intended to repay!""
Camille shook her head.
"The transfers continued for six years.""
Evelyn swung the pistol toward her.
"Stop talking!""
Lily cried out.
Camille immediately crouched, shielding her daughter.
Daniel moved instinctively between them.
"Don't point that thing at my family!""
Evelyn's face crumpled.
"I am your family!""
The words echoed across the chapel.
Daniel stood frozen.
Then, from somewhere behind the guests, a calm voice called out.
"Mrs. Carter, put the weapon on the floor.""
Two uniformed police officers entered through the open chapel doors, followed by a Black female detective in a navy suit.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
Detective Renee Brooks had been assigned to Camille's disappearance during the first six months of the investigation. She had interviewed Daniel in his living room, examined his phone records, and sat beside him while he watched security footage that showed nothing useful.
She had been transferred to another unit shortly afterward.
Now she stood in the aisle with her hands visible, her gaze fixed on Evelyn.
"Put the gun down," Detective Brooks repeated.
Evelyn stared at her.
"You have no right to be here.""
"We received a report of a threatened witness and a possible firearm at this location.""
"Who called you?""
Detective Brooks didn't answer.
One of the officers moved carefully toward the side aisle.
"Ma'am, put the weapon on the floor and step away from it.""
Evelyn's breathing became ragged.
Daniel kept his eyes on her.
"Mom, please.""
For a moment, she looked like the woman he remembered from childhood. The woman who had kissed his forehead before school and stayed awake until he came home from college.
Then she looked at Camille.
And the softness disappeared.
"You should have let the past stay buried.""
She lowered the pistol.
It struck the floor with a metallic clatter.
The officers moved in immediately. One secured the weapon while the other took Evelyn's arms and guided her away from the aisle.
She didn't resist.
Instead, she looked at Daniel as the detective approached.
"You'll understand one day," she whispered.
Daniel couldn't answer.
Detective Brooks turned to Camille.
"Mrs. Carter, are you willing to provide a formal statement?""
Camille nodded.
"Yes.""
"And do you have the evidence you mentioned?""
Camille looked toward Daniel.
"Some of it.""
Detective Brooks frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"The original ledger is missing. I gave a copy to someone I trusted, but I never received confirmation that it was delivered.""
"Who?""
Camille hesitated.
"Vanessa.""
Every head turned toward the bride.
Vanessa stood beside the altar, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She looked as though she might collapse.
Detective Brooks approached her.
"Miss, is that true?""
Vanessa stared at Camille.
"I did what you asked me to do.""
Camille's face hardened.
"No. You did part of what I asked.""
"I kept Lily safe.""
"You kept yourself safe.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"That's not fair.""
"You took the envelope. You took the bracelet. You told Daniel I had disappeared because I wanted to leave him.""
"I never said that!""
"You let him believe it.""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He watched her struggle to find words.
Finally, she reached inside the bodice of her wedding dress and withdrew a small plastic sleeve containing a folded piece of paper.
"I didn't know how to give this to you," she whispered.
Daniel stared at the paper.
"What is it?""
"A copy of the original transfer authorization.""
Detective Brooks took the sleeve carefully.
She unfolded the document and examined the signature at the bottom.
Then she went very still.
"Where did you get this?""
Vanessa looked toward Evelyn, who stood between the two officers.
"From the envelope at the parking garage.""
Detective Brooks studied the signature again.
Daniel leaned closer.
"What is it?""
The detective slowly turned the document so he could see it.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
Daniel Carter.
His own signature.
Except he had never seen the document before.
He looked at Vanessa.
"Why is my signature on a transfer authorization for money I never received?""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"Because someone forged it.""
"Who?""
She looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
But before anyone could ask another question, Detective Brooks's phone vibrated.
She read the message on the screen.
Then she looked up at Daniel.
"Mr. Carter, we need to speak somewhere private.""
"Why?""
Her expression had changed.
"The transfer authorization isn't the only document we found.""
She paused.
"It appears someone opened a bank account in your name two months after your wife disappeared.""
Daniel's stomach dropped.
"Who opened it?""
Detective Brooks looked at Camille.
Camille was staring at the document in the detective's hand as though she had just recognized a face from a nightmare.
May you like
Then she whispered the words that made Daniel's blood run cold.
"That account wasn't opened by your mother.""
