Chapter 9: The Money Paid for My Wife's Disappearance

Daniel read his own name three times.

Each time, the letters remained the same.

*BENEFICIARY: DANIEL CARTER.*

The insurance policy listed Camille as the insured person. The payout was $2.4 million. The date of authorization fell less than a week after her disappearance.

Daniel looked at Detective Brooks.

"I never filed a claim.""

She examined the signature.

"Someone filed it on your behalf.""

"I didn't even have a death certificate.""

"The document attached to the claim states that Camille was presumed dead following a suspected criminal incident.""

Camille shook her head.

"I wasn't presumed dead by a court. There was no declaration.""

Detective Brooks nodded.

"That is one of the irregularities we're investigating.""

Daniel turned toward Evelyn.

"Did you file the claim?""

His mother sat down heavily in the nearest chair.

"No.""

"Then why was this in your handbag?""

She pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.

"I was keeping it safe.""

"Keeping what safe? A forged insurance claim?""

Evelyn looked at Camille.

"I didn't know she was alive.""

Camille's face hardened.

"But you knew someone had arranged the payout.""

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel felt anger rising through him, hot and relentless.

"You told me the insurance company denied the claim. You sat at my kitchen table and told me there wasn't enough evidence to prove Camille was dead.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"Stop saying that!""

His voice cracked through the chapel.

Evelyn flinched.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You watched me sell my car to pay investigators. You watched me spend my savings. You watched Lily ask whether her mother was coming home. And all that time, you knew there was money connected to her disappearance.""

"I didn't know where the money went.""

"But you knew it existed!""

Evelyn covered her face.

"I thought if I kept quiet, everything would stop.""

Camille took a step toward her.

"What did you do, Evelyn?""

Evelyn looked up.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to decide whether to answer.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Malcolm came to me the night Camille disappeared. He told me she had discovered the financial scheme and intended to expose everyone involved. He said your father was already in danger and that if the documents reached the authorities, you would be implicated.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Why would I be implicated?""

"Because your identity had been used to open the accounts.""

"By Richard.""

Evelyn glanced toward her former husband.

Richard stood between two officers, his expression grim.

"I didn't know how far Malcolm had gone," he said.

Evelyn continued.

"Malcolm told me Camille had left the country. He said she had agreed to disappear in exchange for money.""

Camille stared at her.

"You believed that?""

"He showed me a document.""

"What document?""

"A statement with your signature.""

Camille shook her head.

"I never signed anything.""

"I know that now.""

"No," Camille said, her voice trembling.

"You knew I loved Daniel. You knew I would never leave Lily voluntarily. You knew I would never disappear without telling my daughter goodbye.""

Evelyn began to cry harder.

"I was afraid.""

"So was I!"" Camille shouted.

"I was terrified every single day!""

The guests watched in silence.

Camille's hands shook as she continued.

"I spent two years looking over my shoulder. I changed apartments. I changed jobs.

I stopped using my own name. Every time I heard footsteps behind me, I thought somebody had come to finish what they started.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Where did you go?""

Camille wiped her cheeks.

"Malcolm arranged for me to be taken to a private property outside the city after I refused to hand over the original records. He told me it was temporary. He said if I cooperated, Lily would be safe.""

"Did he hold you there?""

"Not the entire time. I escaped after several weeks, but by then I had no money, no documents, and no idea who I could trust.""

Daniel struggled to absorb her words.

"You were alive. You were free. Why didn't you call me?""

Camille looked at Lily.

"Because Malcolm sent me photographs of your house. Of Lily at school. Of you leaving work. He said if I contacted you, he'd make sure you both suffered.""

Daniel's anger faltered.

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"I did. Once.""

Detective Brooks straightened.

"When?""

"About a year after I disappeared. I went to a station in another county and tried to report what happened. Before I could finish, an officer came into the interview room and told me my husband had already reported me missing and that I needed to return home.""

Daniel frowned.

"I never withdrew the missing-person report.""

"I know. But the officer had my photograph, your name, and details about Lily. He told me that if I wanted to protect my daughter, I should stop asking questions.""

Detective Brooks looked troubled.

"Do you remember his name?""

Camille shook her head.

"No. He wasn't wearing a uniform. He showed me a badge, but I couldn't verify it.""

The detective turned toward her colleague.

"We need to investigate that immediately.""

Richard stepped forward.

"That's why I stayed hidden. Malcolm had people inside the system. I didn't know who I could trust.""

Daniel looked at his father.

"You could have trusted me.""

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

"You could have told me you were alive.""

"I believed Malcolm would target you if he knew I was still operating.""

"So instead, you let him use my name to steal millions of dollars?""

Richard said nothing.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Every person in this family has a reason. Every person has an excuse. And somehow, I'm the only one who wasn't allowed to know what was happening.""

Lily's small voice came from behind him.

"Daddy?""

Daniel turned.

His daughter stood beside Camille, holding the folded paper she'd found in Vanessa's coat.

"Is Grandma bad?""

The question stopped him cold.

Evelyn began sobbing.

Daniel crouched in front of Lily.

"Grandma made some very bad choices, baby.""

"Is she going to jail?""

He glanced toward Detective Brooks.

"I don't know.""

Lily looked at Evelyn for a long moment.

"Did she make Mommy go away?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Camille knelt beside her daughter.

"We're still finding out exactly what happened.""

Lily's lips trembled.

"I don't want anybody to go away again.""

Camille pulled her close.

"Neither do I.""

Daniel watched them embrace.

He wanted to hold both of them. He wanted to take them home and lock the doors against every secret that had invaded their lives.

But nothing about this was finished.

Detective Brooks approached Evelyn.

"Mrs. Carter, I need you to come with us while we investigate the insurance claim and your possible involvement in the financial transfers.""

Evelyn rose unsteadily.

Before the officers could lead her away, she turned to Daniel.

"There's something else you need to know.""

He didn't move.

"Tell me.""

She looked at Richard, then at Camille.

"The night Camille disappeared, I received a phone call from someone who said she was dead.""

Camille stiffened.

"Who called you?""

Evelyn's lips trembled.

"I don't know. The number was blocked.""

"What did they say?""

"They told me the accident had been handled. They said the money would arrive within forty-eight hours, and I needed to keep Daniel away from the investigation.""

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

"Did you ask who they were?""

"Yes.""

"What did they say?""

Evelyn looked directly at him.

"They said they were doing it for you.""

Daniel stared at her.

"For me?""

She nodded.

"They said Camille had discovered something about your past. Something that would destroy your life if she told anyone.""

Richard's face changed.

Camille slowly turned toward Daniel.

"What past?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know what she's talking about.""

Evelyn swallowed.

"They said you weren't supposed to know who your real father was.""

The chapel fell silent.

Daniel looked at Richard.

His father stood motionless between the officers.

For a long moment, he didn't speak.

Then he closed his eyes.

"Oh, God.""

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.

"What does that mean?""

Richard opened his eyes.

His face had gone gray.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

Daniel stepped toward him.

"Explain what?""

Richard looked at Camille.

Then at Lily.

Then back at his son.

"I am not your biological father.""

Daniel couldn't breathe.

Richard's voice broke.

"Your mother told me the truth before we married. I raised you as my own, and I loved you as my son. But the man who fathered you was someone Malcolm knew.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Who?""

Richard's lips trembled.

Before he could answer, Detective Brooks's phone rang again.

She listened for several seconds, then turned toward the main entrance.

An officer hurried into the chapel.

"Detective, we have a problem.""

"What kind of problem?""

"The bank records just came through. The account in Daniel Carter's name wasn't opened by Richard.""

Daniel turned sharply.

"What?""

The officer held out a printed photograph.

"We identified the person who submitted the application. The fingerprint match came back five minutes ago.""

Detective Brooks studied the page.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"The account was opened by someone who is already inside this chapel.""

Every face turned.

Evelyn.

Richard.

Malcolm.

Vanessa.

Camille.

Daniel stared at them all, searching for the person who had built the trap around his life.

Then Lily tugged on his sleeve.

"Daddy," she whispered.

He crouched beside her.

She held out the small black laptop she'd taken from the projector table.

"I found something else when the videos were loading.""

Daniel looked at the screen.

A folder had opened automatically.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Daniel as a newborn, wrapped in a hospital blanket, held by a young Black woman he had never seen before.

On the back of the photograph, someone had typed a message.

*ASK WHO SIGNED YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE.*

Daniel lifted his head.

His eyes found Richard.

His father began to cry.

May you like

And across the chapel, Camille whispered the name of the person she had spent two years trying to protect Daniel from.

"Malcolm knows who your real father is.""
