Chapter 7: My Dead Father Walked Into My Wedding

Daniel stared at the photograph until the man's face blurred.

His father was alive.

Not a look-alike. Not a stranger wearing a familiar ring. Richard Carter, the man whose memorial service Daniel had attended eleven years earlier, was standing in the parking area behind the chapel, asking to speak with his son.

Detective Brooks took the phone back.

"Daniel, I need you to stay here while my officers secure the building.""

"Secure it from whom? My father?""

"From anyone who might be connected to this case.""

"He's been dead for eleven years!""

"According to the records, yes.""

Daniel pressed both hands against the table.

"Then explain how he's standing outside my wedding.""

The detective didn't answer immediately. She spoke into her radio, requesting that the officers at the rear entrance maintain their positions. Then she turned back to Daniel.

"Your father hasn't entered the building. We have officers between him and the chapel. You are not obligated to see him.""

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

"Obligated? He supposedly died when I was twenty-seven. My wife disappeared two years ago.

My mother just pulled a gun in front of three hundred people. And now you're telling me the man who raised me is standing outside.""

He looked toward the door.

"If he's alive, I want to know why.""

Detective Brooks studied him.

"Then you speak to him with officers present. No private meeting. No exceptions.""

Daniel nodded.

"Fine.""

They returned to the main chapel.

The wedding had become a crime scene. Officers stood near the entrances, collecting statements from guests and photographing the scattered flowers. The projector still displayed the last frozen image of Richard outside the bank.

Lily sat in the front row with Camille, holding her mother's hand in both of hers.

When Daniel approached, Lily jumped to her feet.

"Daddy, are we going home?""

He knelt before her.

"Yes, baby. We'll go home soon.""

"Is Mommy coming?""

Daniel looked at Camille.

She stood slowly, her expression guarded.

"I'm not leaving her again," she said.

Lily threw her arms around her mother.

Daniel felt relief and anger collide inside his chest. He wanted to embrace Camille. He wanted to demand every answer she had withheld. He wanted to ask how she could have stayed away while he and Lily lived through two years of uncertainty.

Instead, he touched Lily's shoulder.

"Stay with Mommy and Marcus, okay?""

Lily looked up.

"Where are you going?""

"There's someone I need to talk to.""

Camille's face changed.

"Daniel, don't.""

He turned toward her.

"You knew he was alive?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than words could.

"Not at first," Camille said.

"I suspected it after I found the financial records. I didn't have proof until months later.""

"Months later? You've been alive for two years. You could have told me.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"Everyone keeps saying that. My mother said it. Vanessa said it.

You said it. What does it actually mean?""

Camille glanced at Lily.

"It means I made choices I'm going to regret for the rest of my life.""

Daniel swallowed the words he wanted to shout.

"Then start making different choices.""

Before she could respond, an officer approached Detective Brooks.

"He's cooperating," the officer said.

"He wants to enter through the main doors.""

Brooks nodded.

"Bring him in. Keep two officers with him.""

Daniel turned toward the chapel entrance.

The doors opened.

Richard Carter walked into the room.

He wore a charcoal suit and polished black shoes. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his face bore the same deep lines Daniel remembered from the last family photograph taken before the boating accident.

He looked older, thinner, but unmistakably alive.

He stopped beneath the bright chapel lights.

His eyes found Daniel.

For a moment, neither man moved.

Then Richard smiled sadly.

"Hello, son.""

Daniel crossed the aisle in three long strides.

"Don't call me that.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

"Daniel—"

"You let me bury you.""

"I know.""

"You let me stand beside my mother while she cried over an empty coffin. You let me spend eleven years believing you were dead.""

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I had reasons.""

Daniel shoved a nearby chair aside.

"Reasons?""

His voice echoed through the chapel.

"You missed my wedding to Camille. You missed Lily's birth. You missed her first day of school. You missed everything!""

Richard accepted every word without moving.

"I know what I missed.""

"No, you don't. You weren't there when Camille disappeared. You weren't there when I searched hospitals and morgues. You weren't there when Lily asked me if her mother was dead.""

Richard's face tightened.

"I heard about Camille.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"From whom?""

Richard looked past him.

His gaze settled on Camille.

She stood beside Lily, holding her daughter protectively.

Richard's expression changed.

"Camille.""

She didn't answer.

He nodded slowly, as if her silence confirmed something he had feared.

"You survived.""

Camille's eyes hardened.

"Don't act surprised.""

Richard looked back at Daniel.

"I didn't come here to defend myself.""

"Then why are you here?""

"Because you're in danger.""

Daniel laughed.

"That's convenient.""

"Your mother's actions today were not planned. She's frightened, and frightened people make mistakes.""

"You're talking about the woman who raised me. The woman who helped me search for my missing wife. The woman who apparently knew you were alive.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Your mother did what she believed was necessary.""

"Did she know you were alive?""

Richard said nothing.

Daniel stared at him.

"Answer me.""

"Yes.""

The word hit harder than Daniel expected.

His mother had known.

For eleven years.

Daniel looked toward the room where Evelyn was being questioned.

"She lied to me every single day.""

"She was protecting you.""

Daniel seized Richard's lapel.

Two officers immediately moved closer, but Richard raised one hand to stop them.

"Let him go," he said quietly.

Daniel released him.

"Tell me why you faked your death.""

Richard straightened his jacket.

"Because I discovered that people I trusted were using my company to move money through fraudulent accounts. When I tried to stop them, they threatened my family.""

"Who?""

Richard looked toward the projector.

"Somebody who knew how to make evidence disappear. Somebody who could turn a missing person into a murder suspect and a dead man into a ghost.""

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"Was Camille involved?""

"She discovered the transfers. She was smarter than any of us realized.""

"Did you make her disappear?""

Richard looked directly at him.

"No.""

Daniel searched his face.

"Did you threaten her?""

"No.""

"Did you open the account in my name?""

Richard hesitated.

"I used your identity.""

Daniel recoiled.

"You admitted it?""

"I needed a way to track the money without alerting the people watching me.""

"You stole my identity!""

"I never intended to leave you exposed.""

"But you did!""

Richard lowered his head.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful man hiding a secret and more like an aging father who had run out of excuses.

"I know," he whispered.

Camille stepped forward.

"Tell him about the original ledger.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Not here.""

Daniel let out a bitter laugh.

"Of course. Not here. Not now. Never when people can hear you.""

Richard looked at the guests, then at the officers.

"The ledger contains names that could destroy more than your mother's foundation. It includes officials, business owners, and people who have spent years building respectable lives on stolen money.""

Detective Brooks stepped closer.

"Mr. Carter, you're going to provide that information to us.""

Richard nodded.

"I will.""

"Where is the ledger?""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"With the only person I trusted enough to keep it safe.""

Daniel waited.

Richard's eyes shifted toward Vanessa, who stood near the side wall under an officer's supervision.

"The woman your son was about to marry.""

Daniel turned.

Vanessa's face went white.

"No," she whispered.

Richard continued.

"She has the original ledger. She's had it since the night Camille disappeared.""

Daniel stared at his bride.

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

"I don't have it anymore.""

Richard's expression remained unreadable.

"Then where is it?""

Vanessa looked at Daniel, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"I gave it to someone who promised me nobody would ever find out what was inside.""

"Who?"" Daniel demanded.

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Then she looked toward the main entrance.

"The person who just walked into this chapel isn't the only Carter who faked his death.""

Every officer turned toward her.

Richard's face lost all color.

And from the back of the chapel, a second man's voice called out.

"That's right, Vanessa.""

Daniel turned toward the sound.

A man stepped out from behind the open doors.

He wore a dark suit and carried a thin leather folder.

Richard stared at him as though he were seeing a ghost.

May you like

The man smiled.

"Did you really think I was going to let you tell the story first, brother?""
