Chapter 2: The Video She Begged Him Not to Play
The video did not begin.
For three agonizing seconds, the projector displayed nothing but a bright white rectangle.
Daniel stood beneath the floral arch, his black tuxedo suddenly feeling too tight around his neck. Vanessa held his wrist with both hands now, her manicured fingers digging into his skin.
"Daniel, please," she whispered.
"Let me explain before you do something you'll regret.""
He pulled away.
"You had two years to explain.""
A murmur swept through the guests.
Vanessa looked toward Evelyn, silently asking for help.
Daniel's mother remained standing beside her chair.
"Vanessa," Evelyn said, her voice trembling, "tell us what that footage means.""
"It means nothing without context.""
"Then give us the context," Marcus demanded.
Vanessa's eyes flashed toward him.
"This is a family matter.""
Marcus pointed at the screen.
"You made it everybody's business when you brought us here to watch you marry a man whose wife disappeared under suspicious circumstances.""
"Marcus," Daniel warned automatically.
His best friend turned toward him.
"I'm sorry, man. But look at her.""
Daniel did.
Vanessa's wedding makeup was still flawless. Her white gown lay in perfect folds around her feet. The diamond bracelet Daniel had given her for their engagement glittered beneath the bright chapel lights.
Everything about her looked exactly as it had ten minutes earlier.
Except her face.
She wasn't looking at Daniel like a woman terrified of losing the man she loved.
She was looking at the projector like someone waiting for a bomb to explode.
At the laptop, Lily pressed a small button.
The video began loading again.
Vanessa rushed toward her.
"Give me that computer!""
Lily jerked backward.
Daniel stepped between them so quickly that Vanessa nearly collided with his chest.
"Don't touch her.""
Vanessa stopped.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she lifted her chin.
"You're choosing to believe a six-year-old over the woman who's stood beside you for two years?""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I'm choosing to find out why you're frightened of a video.""
"I'm frightened because you're humiliating me in front of everyone!""
"Camille disappeared. I buried an empty coffin in my heart because nobody could tell me what happened to my wife. And now my daughter has found you on a recording connected to the place where her car was found.""
His voice cracked on the last word.
"Tell me why.""
Vanessa's lips parted.
The projector emitted a soft electronic click.
The image returned.
This time, it showed the interior of the parking garage entrance. The timestamp in the corner read *10:47 P.M.*
Daniel moved closer to the screen.
He recognized the yellow barrier arm. He recognized the security booth. He even recognized the dent in the concrete pillar near the entrance.
He had studied photographs of this place until he could have drawn it from memory.
The video showed Vanessa standing near the driver's side of a black sedan.
Then a figure entered the frame.
A tall person in a gray hooded jacket.
The figure handed Vanessa the envelope.
Vanessa looked toward the security booth before taking it.
She counted something inside.
Money, perhaps.
Documents.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Can you zoom in on the timestamp?"" he asked.
Lily tapped the laptop.
The footage enlarged slightly.
Vanessa's face was clear enough to recognize, but the second figure remained turned away from the camera.
Then something happened that made Daniel's stomach twist.
Vanessa reached into the sedan and pulled out a small object.
A silver bracelet.
Daniel knew that bracelet.
He had bought it for Camille on their fifth anniversary. A delicate chain with a tiny heart charm, engraved with the initials D and C.
He had searched their house for it after she vanished.
He had asked the police whether it had been recovered.
They told him it hadn't.
On the screen, Vanessa held the bracelet up to the light.
The second figure extended a hand.
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she placed the bracelet inside the person's palm.
Daniel staggered backward.
"No," he whispered.
Evelyn caught his elbow.
"Daniel?""
He shook his head.
"That's Camille's bracelet.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel, I can explain that.""
"How do you have her bracelet?""
"I didn't—"
"How?""
The word burst from him.
Vanessa flinched.
Guests shifted uneasily in their seats. One man near the back began recording on his phone before Marcus turned and told him to put it away.
Lily stood beside the projector table, her little hands gripping the edge.
"There's more," she said.
Daniel turned to her.
"What do you mean?""
"I saw the other videos.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Lily continued, speaking faster now that she had started.
"She watched them when she thought I was asleep. Sometimes she cried. Sometimes she talked to somebody on the phone and said Mommy's name.""
Vanessa snapped her eyes open.
"Lily, stop lying!""
The little girl recoiled.
Daniel's face hardened.
"One more word to her like that, and you're leaving this chapel.""
Vanessa stared at him.
For a heartbeat, her expression changed into something cold and unfamiliar.
Then she looked down at her dress and began to cry.
"I loved you," she said.
"I loved you both. You have no idea what I've done to protect this family.""
Daniel felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.
"Protect us from what?""
She looked toward the screen.
"I can't tell you here.""
"Why not?""
"Because someone else is watching.""
The words silenced the room.
Daniel glanced toward the chapel doors.
Both were closed.
The seated guests turned to look around, searching faces and corners as though an intruder might suddenly emerge from beneath the flower arrangements.
Marcus stepped into the aisle.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I shouldn't have come here.""
She reached for her bouquet, then seemed to remember that she'd dropped it. White petals lay scattered across the polished floor.
Daniel watched her hands tremble.
"Who gave you the envelope?""
She said nothing.
"Who was the person in the video?""
Nothing.
"Did you see my wife that night?""
Vanessa's tears spilled over.
"Daniel—"
"Did you see Camille?""
She pressed both hands against her mouth.
For a moment, Daniel thought she might finally tell him everything.
Instead, she whispered, "You have to cancel this wedding.""
A stunned silence followed.
Daniel stared at her.
"You think?""
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
"No. You don't understand. This isn't about us getting married anymore. It's about what happens when that second file opens.""
Lily looked at the screen.
The loading bar had reached the end.
A new image appeared: a close-up of a white envelope resting on a wooden table. Written across its front was Daniel's full name.
Beneath it, in smaller letters, were four words.
*OPEN ONLY IF SHE RETURNS.*
Daniel's heart hammered against his ribs.
"Returns from where?"" he asked.
Vanessa stepped toward him.
"I swear to you, I never wanted Camille to disappear.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Then why were you at the garage?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Because Camille called me that night.""
Every face in the chapel seemed to turn at once.
Daniel couldn't hear the air-conditioning anymore. He couldn't hear the rustle of dresses or the distant traffic outside.
He heard only one sentence.
Camille called me.
He grabbed Vanessa's shoulders.
"You said you barely knew her.""
"I know.""
"You told me you met her only twice.""
"I know.""
"You sat beside me while I searched for her. You watched me put her photograph on the news. You watched Lily cry herself to sleep.""
Vanessa broke down.
"I know!""
"Then tell me what happened!""
She looked at him with an expression so desperate that he almost stepped back.
"She told me not to trust you.""
Daniel released her.
The words seemed to travel slowly through the chapel, reaching every guest one by one.
Evelyn shook her head.
"That's impossible.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Your son doesn't know everything about that night.""
Daniel's face went numb.
"What are you saying?""
Before she could answer, the projector screen changed again.
The envelope disappeared.
A new file appeared beneath the title of the second video.
Its name was simple.
*DANIEL_CARTER_FINAL.mp4*
Lily looked at her father.
"Daddy," she whispered, "I didn't put that one there.""
Vanessa took a step backward.
Then another.
And when the laptop began playing the third file automatically, Daniel heard a man's voice come through the chapel speakers.
A voice he recognized.
His own.
"Make sure she never comes back.""
Daniel stopped breathing.
Because he had never said those words.
At least, he didn't remember saying them.
May you like
And on the screen, a timestamp appeared above his own face.
*11:03 P.M. — THE NIGHT CAMILLE DISAPPEARED.*
