Chapter 10: The Secret Inside Claire's Music Box
Darius listened to Maya's voice message seven times before he finally lowered his phone.
Each time, the same words seemed to cut deeper.
It has the paper that proves who my real daddy is.
I watched my grandson struggle to breathe.
"Richard," he said quietly, "what does that mean?""
The attorney didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the old marriage certificate lying on the bed.
"I think Claire may have been trying to protect something. But we need to be careful. A child's understanding of adult conversations isn't always accurate.""
Darius shook his head.
"Maya wouldn't invent something like that.""
"I didn't say she invented it.""
"Then tell me what you're thinking.""
Richard closed the folder.
"I'm thinking Stephen Miller may be more involved in Claire's life than any of us realized.""
Darius walked toward the window.
For eight years, he had believed he was the only man Claire had ever married.
He remembered their wedding.
He remembered the tiny white flowers Claire had tucked into her hair.
He remembered her crying during their vows.
And now someone was suggesting that the woman he had loved had hidden an entire marriage from him.
"Mom," he said without turning around, "did Claire ever talk about Stephen?""
I thought carefully.
"Not by that name.""
"Did she ever mention a man from her past?""
I remembered something.
"Once. When Maya was a baby, Claire received a letter. She read it and immediately put it in the fireplace.""
Darius turned.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she asked me not to interfere. She said it was an old problem that had nothing to do with you.""
"What did the letter look like?""
"White envelope. No return address.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Did you see the handwriting?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Darius picked up his phone.
"I'm calling the police. We need to get Maya before anybody moves her again.""
Richard agreed.
The officers were already heading toward the warehouse.
We followed at a distance.
The abandoned building stood near the industrial edge of town, surrounded by rusted fencing and overgrown weeds.
Two police vehicles were parked near the entrance.
An officer approached us.
"Mr. Cole, we've found evidence that someone was here recently.""
"Was my daughter here?""
"We're checking.""
Darius looked through the open warehouse doors.
There were old wooden pallets, broken furniture, and a small table near the back.
On the table sat a pink child's water bottle.
Maya's.
Darius rushed forward, but an officer stopped him.
"Sir, please wait.""
He pointed toward the water bottle.
"That's my daughter's.""
The officer nodded.
"We've secured the area.""
Then another officer emerged from a side room carrying a small purple backpack.
Darius recognized it immediately.
Maya had used it for school.
He took it carefully.
Inside was a stuffed rabbit, a packet of tissues, and a folded drawing.
The drawing showed a little girl standing between three adults.
One was labeled Daddy.
Another was labeled Grandma.
The third was labeled Mommy.
But beneath the drawing, Maya had written something in uneven letters.
*I WANT MY FAMILY BACK.*
Darius pressed the paper against his chest.
I turned away, unable to watch him cry.
Then a police officer called from the other side of the building.
"We found something.""
We followed him into the small office.
There was a metal filing cabinet against the wall.
One drawer had been left open.
Inside were several folders, a photograph of Claire, and a small wooden music box.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to Claire.
She used to play it for Maya at bedtime.
Darius picked it up.
The little ballerina inside was missing, but the music mechanism still worked.
He turned the key.
A soft melody filled the room.
Then something rattled inside the base.
Darius examined the bottom.
There was a tiny hidden compartment.
He opened it.
Inside was a folded piece of paper wrapped in plastic.
His hands shook as he unfolded it.
It was a laboratory report.
The heading read:
*PATERNITY TEST — PRIVATE FAMILY RECORD.*
Darius stared at the names.
Claire Bennett.
Stephen Miller.
And Maya Cole.
The result was printed in bold.
*Probability of paternity: 99.99%.*
Darius sat down heavily.
"No.""
Richard took the report.
He examined the date.
Then his expression changed.
"This was conducted when Maya was three months old.""
Darius shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
I looked at the document.
"Could it be a mistake?""
Richard studied the signatures.
"The laboratory was legitimate. But we cannot assume the report is authentic until it's independently verified.""
Darius looked at me.
"She told me Maya was mine.""
His voice cracked.
"She looked me in the eyes and told me.""
I wanted to comfort him.
But I didn't know how.
Then the officer spoke.
"There's something else.""
He pointed toward the filing cabinet.
Beneath the music box was a second envelope.
It contained a handwritten note.
The handwriting was Claire's.
Stephen,
I know what the test says. But biology does not give you the right to destroy a little girl's life.
Darius has loved Maya since the moment she was born. He has been her father in every way that matters.
If you ever try to take her away from him, I will make sure the truth is exposed.
Darius closed his eyes.
Richard read the final lines aloud.
The agreement we signed still stands. You will receive the money you requested, and you will stay away from my family.
If you break that agreement, you will lose everything.
There was a signature beneath the letter.
Stephen Miller.
Darius looked at Richard.
"What agreement?""
Richard turned the paper over.
On the back was a bank reference number.
The same company appeared again.
Colebridge Holdings.
Then Darius's phone rang.
The police officer leading the search answered his own phone nearby.
He listened.
His expression became serious.
"Understood.""
He ended the call and turned toward us.
"We've located Vanessa's vehicle.""
Darius stood immediately.
"Where?""
"At the private airport outside town.""
My stomach dropped.
"Airport?""
The officer nodded.
"She was seen entering a private terminal with another person.""
"Who?""
The officer checked his notes.
"Stephen Miller.""
Darius looked down at the paternity report.
Then back at the officer.
"Are you telling me my wife and the man named on this report are trying to leave the country?""
"We're confirming their identities now.""
Darius gripped the music box.
"Where is Maya?""
The officer hesitated.
"We believe she was transferred to another vehicle before the warehouse was searched.""
Darius's face hardened.
"Then find that vehicle.""
As the officers rushed outside, Richard received a call.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly lowered his phone.
"What happened?"" I asked.
He looked at Darius.
"Stephen Miller has just contacted my office.""
"What does he want?""
Richard swallowed.
"He says he wants to meet you.""
"Where?""
Richard glanced at the paternity report.
May you like
Then he gave us the answer.
"At the place where Claire and Stephen were married.""
